what exactly should I look to verify that my windows hosting server is healthy and secure?
I have a windows hosting server and thats running pretty smoothly so far. what exactly should I check to monitor the health of my server, is there a checklist .. any tips .. where should I start from...

well, this answer needs ot be long and involved ,but i m gonig to give you a few short tips. Search for "sygate SOS" and ru nthe port scans to make sure your firewall is donig its job. View the web logs from your web/ftp server. Also look at the event viewer to see who has been logging on and off and what your programs and services have been doing (errors wise and whatnot). Keep a close eye on your firewall logs and look for questionable activity. Hopefully you have active IDs systems installed and can watch that stuff. Go to the microsoft main site and do searches on server health and follow those links, they can tell u what things to do and look for. I can't give links to this as microsoft rotates their links regularly and would be outdated in 2 hours. Like I mentioned, there is tons of stuff u can do to minitor your server depending on how involved nad what you want to monitor. Just general heath of it is hard to give an answer to as each different service the server runs can and needs to be minitored. There are programs out ther ethat incorporate alot of the logs and service monitoring into one GUI. If your server is getting hammered with users then u want ti automate the process. If you are just using it for low amount of people or services, then jsut look at logs yourself. If you have it live on the web and its been working ok for over a week then u can be fairly sure that it is secure. But you do need ot watch who may have been able to take control of it as 50% of hackers out there get control and use it to their advantage and leave it do what u have it programmed to do there fore u have no idea anythnig has changed. I run email, ftp, http, streaming meadia, instant messanging and a few other things, in the form of servers, so i know what you are talking about. Security and monitoring/auditing are my best friends.

My website is a peer to peer advice forum. I cant decide between Linex and Windows Hosting. Help?
I have my domain and set up most of my hosting stuff last night. I thought I bought Linex hosting but it keeps asking me if I want Windows or Linex. I found that with Windows extra software is generally expensive which is not something I would look forward to. If my website is a forum would I easily beable to run the Linex hosting? Any advice would help tremendously. I can add details if need be.

I run several servers both Linux and Windows. In general you will get more power out of a Linux server with the same hardware configuration as the Windows server. If cost is a concern Linux will always be cheaper as it has a much stronger open source community. The most important question is what Forum you plan to use. Some are programmed in ASP which does run better on Windows while many are written in PHP which will give Linux an advantage. When managing a web server a control panel is used that takes care of most day to day tasks. So it should be no more difficult to configure a website on a Linux server with cPanel than it would with a Windows server.

Whats the difference between Linux & Windows Hosting?
When I was buying my domain, it gave me the option of selecting an OS. I decided to go with Linux, but is there any major difference? Can you also assign file permission on Windows?

As far as features, they can both do most of the same, just in different ways. Linux Servers do not support ASP.NET, while most Windows servers will not run PHP (most...some are able to). Personally, I think ASP.NET is a quite a bit more powerful than PHP, but that's just because you can use several different languages, and Visual Studio makes development so much easier. Also, ASP.NET has some very awesome bundled features such as the ability to program a login script in very short amount of time. PHP is a little less overwhelming though, and still an extremely versatile and powerful language. Windows servers are generally quite a bit more expensive to buy space on than Linux, though. If you are just hosting a small-time website, the difference won't be noticeable. You will pull everything off on one that you would the other. If you start developing enterprise level web applications though, you should probably take a harder look at the differences between the two and what you hope to get out of it.

It depends on the host. I recommend the Godaddy Deluxe plan. http://www.hosttell.com/godaddy You just have to select windows hosting instead of linux (which is selected by default). This option is located on top of the plans description. The deluxe plan supports both php and wordpress so it's not a problem. Check them out. What does it mean to choose Linux or Windows when you set up hosting?
I set up hosting on GoDaddy and they ask you to choose. My web guy said to go with Linux. What does this mean and what is the difference? Is it easier for me to make changes if it's Windows and that's the kind of PC I have, or does it only have to do with the type of PC my web guy used to design the site? Thanks a lot!

Linux and Windows are two groups of packages offered by hosting companies. Linux is usually the cheaper solution but there is no difference in performance regardless of price, its just that Windows license is expensive. As far as WHICH ONE TO CHOOSE, it makes no difference at all if you have a static HTML website. It only matters if you want to create a dynamic database driven website (i.e. requires server side programming in some way). With dynamic websites, Windows platform offers you ASP/ASP.NET + MS SQL SERVER/MS ACCESS support; where as Linux platform offers PHP/PERL + MySQL support. If you don't need to use any of the above technologies, go for Linux which is usually cheaper.

NEED ADVICE: Linux Hosting or Windows Hosting?
I like to get a web host, hope you guys can help me choose. But I need your opinion if I should get a Linux hosting or Windows Hosting? I've read articles online, but it'll be nice to hear your opinions.

Hi! Easy choice, the only reason you would want to go with Windows hosting is if you are planning on using ASP.net or MSSQL. If you do not plan on using either of those stick with Linux hosting and here is why: Linux hosting is: - More stable than windows hosting generally. - Cheaper as it is free - Easier to manage in most cases so a lot more competition among hosts. Hope that helps!
