How to block internet radio within within a windows domain?
I've got a Windows Small Business Server 2003 domain and need to block access to web radio streams. How can I accomplish this without purchasing specialized software?
Thank you!
I'm looking for a technological solution not advice for enforcing company policy. If your advice is to tell employees not to use web radio save your breath - you're not answering my question.
Could setup a GPO /logon script to download a hosts file that you setup yourself that points 127.0.0.1 to the urls or IPs of these streaming radio sites. Just make a list of them on the server and you should be good to go.
Surprised there's no proxy.
How do I share data between two computers, one on windows domain and the other on a windows workgroup?
I have a two laptops, once configured to run in a windows domain and the other configured to run in a windows workgroup. I need a easy way to share data between the two computers.
Thanks in advance.....
Because one of the PCs is part of a domain, and not the workgroup, sharing between the two is difficult. DO NOT attemp to join the domain PC to your workgroup. That will remain if from the domain and when you get back to work you will be unable to attach to the work computers. (Trust me, I have to fix people daily who do this.)
When you plug it into your home network you should get an IP address.
Assuming Windows XP or 2000...
Click Start, then Run and type in: cmd.
A command window should open.
Type: ipconfig.
It should display several lines of information including its IP address. Hopefully it will not be 0.0.0.0
Do the same on the other computer to get its IP address
(Lets say the address is 192.168.0.100)
Go back to the domain computer
Click Start then Run
In the Run box type: \\192.168.0.100 (using the real IP address)
Depending on how the security if set on the domain computer, hopefully a window will open showing the workgroup computer.
If it does, you can copy files in and out of that window.
You will NOT be able to go the other way. While PCs in a domain can see with a workgroup computer, the workgroup computer can not see the domain computer.
Be aware the your work IT people will not be happy with us doing this as it opens the PC to possbile viruses and other attacks. So I never told you how to do it. Deal?
Can I join a computer running Novell Netware to a Windows Domain?
I have a network of computers running Novell Netware. I have an application on a Windows 2000 server that only runs on a Domain Controller, this seems to be causing issues for the clients that connect to the server for another application as they're not on the domain, but rather in workgroups. Is it possible to join the client machines to the Domain Controller, and keep using Novell?
these are two very different applications that do conflict with each other. for what i know you can do one or the other not both. you would have serious problems.
How can I join a Linux client to windows domain ?
I want to make linux (RHEL4) client of windows domain, which is on windows 2003 server ?
Install the Samba client to join the domain. Install the Samba server to share your files on the network.
How do you get and setup windows domain server?
I need to know how to get and setup a windows doamin server and i also want to know how much it costs or if it is free. I boughut my computer from a school and so it doesent have some things on it. It is a Windows XP Pro service pack 2. Please help.
A "domain server" is just a server that is a member of a domain... In windows-speak, that means you have to be running a server version of microsoft windows... NT3,4,2000,2003,2008 are capable of creating a "domain", although starting with 2000 and above it is modified slightly and is actually called Active Directory, which, among other things, provides domain services like in NT 3.x and NT 4.
You can also "simulate" a windows domain using SAMBA running on a Linux system.
To create a domain, without Linux, you would have to purchase any of a number of windows server versions (EXCEPT the Web-only server.) I haven't priced windows server OS lately, but expect it to cost around $800 for the base system with 5 client access licences. (meaning 5 client computers could connect to the server, Additional 5-packs of licences will run you around $300 per 5 users.
Samba, being open source, is "free" and there is no licensing costs per client. It will also run well on hardware that wouldn't even boot Windows 2008 server, let alone give decent performance to the clients.
Keep in mind, many antivirus products that are "Designed for" and "priced for" windows XP/Vista/2000 desktop will NOT run on the server OS... Often a base AV product to run on the server OS will run $200 or more per year.
I guess the real quesetion is "why do you want/need a windows domain?"
How to create windows domain logon account in windows 2003 server for windows xp proff. client machine.?
In our office setup we are using 10 Win XP proff. clinet and one windows 2003 server. Now we plan to make 10 win. xp machine in domain with windows 2003 as server for centralised Administration.
So any one can give idea to create domain account and way for centralised Administration and what are things required.
You're going to need to set up Active Directory. There are plenty of guides on that, like this one: http://searchwinit.techtarget.com/generic/0,295582,sid1_gci1050336,00.html
I actually have personal experience setting up domains like that, so if you'd like, you can email me or IM me, and I'll walk you through it. I'd post it here, but there are lots of steps involved, and a lot of Q&A. (For example, do you have the domain created, is every computer connected... and so on).
How do you add a ubuntu workstation to a windows domain?
I use windows server 2003 and was wondering how can you join the linux box to my windows network?
Not sure, but it would likely be easier to add the Windows domain within Linux using SAMBA.
How do i get linux to log on to a windows nt domain?
Domain controller is Windows NT, Linux is SUSE. Linux does not see the domain when browsing for domains in the network setup on YAST.
You will want to use Samba. Type "man samba" or go to http://www.linuxhomenetworking.com/wiki/index.php/Quick_HOWTO_:_Ch10_:_Windows,_Linux,_and_Samba
firewall router as dhcp server in a windows domain?
1. can i use my firewall router as a dhcp server in my windows domain?
2. will this effect the login or authentication process?
3. how can can i make a backup dhcp server if in case my current dhcp server fails then it will automatically gives the same ip address to everyone in my network.
thanks.
1) Yes. It doesn't matter what kind of domain our windows networking environment you have set up. Just make sure your router does provide DHCP services (as most do).
2) Not if you DHCP scope and environment are set up correctly. There are several articles in the Microsoft KB regarding this.
3) You can't really set up an environment that has two DHCP servers giving out the same IP's. You could, however, have two DHCP server running together, each assigning an IP from 2 different pools. i.e. DHCP #1 = 192.168.1.10 - 125 and DHCP #2 = 192.168.1.126 - 254. This assumes you don't have more clients than what would fit in each IP range.
How to join linux machine in to windows 2003 server domain?
We are having some 300 client machines, each running windows xp and windows 2000 and the server is Wndows 2003 Server. Now we planned to have some linux clients so i need to know the information regarding the joining of linux machine into windows ADS domain network
Depending on how your network is setup and how you authenticate make sure you have Kerberos and LDAP installed. You need to install SAMBA and edit your SMB.CONF file to look something like the one in the link I included.
