It really depends on how you are storing the photos of your work. Good pictures typically take about 700KB to about 2mb if you want the pics to look sharper. ALthough compression sort of helps through converting to jpeg. PNG and tiff take up alot of space. In addition basic webpages with only text are about 10kb so it really depends on how many paintings you want to put up. 500mb is typically a good amount if you plan on posting about 100-200 images plus some regular pages. Main thing you have to worry about is that if your pictures take up too much space it will eat up bandwidth. This is how many times your website can be viewed.

How can I buy cheep unlimited web space with only one payment?
I don't know much about having my own website. But I have some ideas, and I would like to start a web page, not just a little blog. But with the potential of being used for a business. All the places I have seen so far have monthly, or yearly payments. Is there a cheaper way to buy web space with only one payment and have it be permanently mine? Your ISP may offer webspace for free w/ your current subscription, but not unlimited, usually 10-100mb. You won't find anything that is single payment forever hosting. You'll probably be best off going w/ a solution like godaddy, their service is extremely affordable, has a lot of plugins already built in, email and solid administration. I wouldn't put anything that i would ever want to turn into a business on a free server. If you are serious about what you are doing you should really consider investing at least some monetary value into it (be it $10 a month even).

How many pictures will fit in a web-space that allows 25 MB total?

that would depend on the size of the picture - assume a digital camera @ 5mega pix pics would average about 2.5 MB each thus you would be able to store and show 10 pictures If you used a photo resizer (EZ THUMBS) you could make them 1024x768 at about 200K each doing that you can then store and show about 125 pictures

The most important thing (besides price) is to find a service provider that has the features you need now and in the near future. Think about support for programming languages (Perl, PHP, etc.), shopping carts, serving video, databases (MySQL, etc.), and anything else you might need. It may take some research.
