Pointing Canadian domain at UK server?
I'm a web designer from the UK with a client in Canada. I'm having trouble finding a UK hosting company that will point a .ca domain at a UK server. What is the best way to do this? Do I have to buy Canadian hosting? Thanks!

If you've got to ask, are you sure you want to host yourself? I asked about this on ya ages ago (previous life) about how come you cant just set up your own server, rather than pay for hosting. The answers were all similar, you can, but the security and set up is a nightmare. Since then, Ive done lots of playing, with web design, and hosting...not myself (though ive used a virtual host set up, localhost to test php applications) and ive tried 5 different major hosts...all good. Definatly, for a fiver or so, better than hosting yourself! I wouldnt host a serious site on my own connection, because of setting up hardware security and software security, It will get compromised (particularly as your asking opinions on second hand £30 servers off ebay!) I mean this helpfully, not derogatory! Try it to play with, on a non serious site, one that contains no personal or financial info or database, as i never did, so youre more commited to trying it than i was! One final thing though....the nail in the coffin for me trying it was, I didnt realise, until i got hosting, and ftp'd up a few sites...how long it took..BECAUSE even though your connection is broadband, and 2, upto 8 meg etc, the "UPLOAD" is severely limited, to a few "K" per second. You need a business connection, or specialist package to upload quickly, and its not ftp to a server in your case...an "upload" is your "download" speed to your viewers! you will be serving up, about 250K best, compared to your 2 meg download speed!!!

I think it's difficult everywhere to be honest. I'm newly trained in the same things as you, XHTML, Perl, PHP, JavaScript server technologies etc etc, but finding someone to take me on as employee or contractor is proving difficult. As a result I'm investing in as much extra training as I possibly can, making me more attractive in more than one area.

How do I tag a .com web site to make it show up in Yahoo UK search results?
My business is based in the UK and its main domain name ends in .com. However the web site is hosted by Microsoft which obviously means that the server is based in the USA. The web site is currently performing very well in Yahoo's search results for the whole web but if a searcher tries a 'UK only' Yahoo search, my site doesn't seem to come up at all. How do I tag the site to tell Yahoo that I want this to show up as a UK site? Google's webmaster tools allow me to do this - I can associate a specific geographic region with the site and it's now showing up well on Google UK results. I do also own the corresponding .co.uk domain and have got this hosted by a UK web hosting company, but simply with an automatic redirect to the .com site hosted by Microsoft. I realise I could make the .co.uk site my main site instead, and get the .com version to point to the UK; but I was just wondering first if there is a simple way to tag a .com site to tell Yahoo that it's UK content.

How do you redirect the .co.uk to the .com? Make sure you use a 301 redirect (through .htaccess) rather than meta refreshing etc. - that way the properties of yourdomain.co.uk will apply to your .com - and it will do better in the UK search results. It sounds like you're using your hosts redirect feature or something, which will not achieve this, infact it will penalise you. Also make sure in your meta tags etc. you say you're "Based in the UK" or things of that nature, this also helps. The above two things should help, as well as marketing the .co.uk domain once the 301 redirect is in place (on UK sites perferably!) but don't expect overnight change in the search engines. May take a few months to get the desired results.
