Is there a difference between web hosting and web server?
I am looking to transfer my website from a friends to a server of my own. Not sure what the difference is between hosting and server. Also would appreciate any recommendations.

To use FTP, you must know the hosting site's FTP address to your site, the username and password used. All this is information that should have been given to you in an email when you signed up. Or you can find it on the hosting site's Support page and search for FTP. Enter all this information in a FTP program like SmartFTP and click connect. After connecting to your site, make sure it has opened in the public_html or root directory. This will be where your home page (index.html) will be located. If you have a directory structure on your hardrive of your site, make sure you upload all folders/files using the same structure else your paths to files and images will be broken. DO NOT use spaces in your folder/file names. Links to these can not be read by some browser if they contain white space. Ron

It depends on whether or not your web host offers a task scheduler (called CRON on Linux/Unix machines). Most PHP-based content management systems (Drupal, Moodle, PHPBB2, etc) that have some sort of periodic maintentance like sending out mailing lists, have a special script, typically called "cron.php", which must then be called from the cron application. Failing that, the only other way to do it would be to set up a scheduled task on YOUR machine to call up the script in your web browser... which is pretty awkward. For your calendar example, you would set up a CRON task to call your script once a day. The script would then check the database and see if there are any upcoming notifications that need to be sent out.

I think what you probably need to do is take some classes or courses on computer programming. You will need a degree I wud think in order to actually do this, unless you know how to do it already. Thats all the help I can offer.. hope it helps..
