Web Hosting Help
Can you help me with my web hosting problem?
I registered for an account on www.netfast.org (free web hosting). They organize your files with an FTP like system. I uploaded what I wanted to be my home page, but whenever you type in the address to my site (www.mpracingteam.netfast.org), it brings up the "index of /" page. How can I make it so that the file I uploaded (home.htm) is the page visitors see when they type in the basic URL? Also, how can I make it so that they can't access my FTP? Thanks!
usually, web sites have a default page
named "default.htm" or "index.htm" which
gets returned if a page isn't specified in the url.
For your page to come up as it stands now,
someone would have to type
www.mpracingteam.netfast.org/home.htm.
The easiest thing for you to do would be to rename the
home.htm page to index.html.
For the second part of your question, somewhere in your
control panel should be something which says "deny directory listing" or something like that.
That has to be enabled for anyone to be blocked from viewing your directory.
Need help to open a web hosting company?
Hello I'm looking to open a small web hosting company, I'm not sure where to get
a server for like hosting 100 clients a month.. so i need a lot of space and a lot
of bandwidth if possible unlimited... give me the best websites for this..
If you've never been in business before, I would strongly recommend that you talk to a business counselor before you do anything especially spend money. I'd call the local office of SCORE (go to http://www.score.org and input your zip code to find the chapter nearest you), the advice is FREE.
The counselor at SCORE will most likely advise you to write a business plan which is very good advice because it will force you to dig out all of the start up details and the costs of starting a web hosting company and force you to also understand all of the aspects of this business including the customers you'll concentrate on (your market ) and how you'll go after them.
Try this link :

and read some of the articles especially the ones about a business plan and starting a business.
Good Luck

If you like to create websites (usually you will end up more than 1 website, I got more than 100 websites in about 6 months' time), go for multiple web hosting services where you could host all your websites in one account.
I would like to suggest following webhosting which I use, they are excellent.
Hostmonster http://www.hostmonster.com/track/ryukenden/
They offer hosting of "unlimited domains" and you will get massive webspace of 300000 MB (300 GB ). They only charge $5.95/month and they offer "a free Domain Name" and installing service called "Fantastico". By using Fantastico, you could create own forum, photo gallery, shopping cart (e-commerce),your own auction site and your own blogs within few seconds. They also offer "Free Website Builder" as well.
Visit the site to check details.

Following site is quite good to register domains as price is reasonable with free privacy. Some charge about $5/ year just for free privacy.

Help with Yahoo web hosting ordering by credit card please?
Downloaded yahoo site builder.
Spent 3 months building site.
Tried to pay Yahoo web hosting online using a British visa debit card.
Yahoo says "there is a problem with payment details, please ring customer care number in America".
I ring the number to be told that the credit card must be United States based for dollar payment and that a UK visa card is no good.
Anyone got any ideas what i can do apart from shoot myself.
I have spent over 100 hours working on this site and to be honest I think the chap i spoke to is 2 butties short of a picnic
Please excuse the spelling and grammar, I'm pretty wound up at the minute.
No need to shoot myself, have just sorted the problem thanks for the help!!
Well, I don't think all of your work is lost. If you can preview the web site in your browser or look at the code through site builder, then you still have your HTML. You can use that code in any other program and keep your site the way it is.
Do they take PayPal payments? You should be able to convert the currency with that.
Who can help me open a Yahoo! web hosting account? I can deposit handle fee into your Paypal account.?
Who can help me open a Yahoo! web hosting account? I can deposit handle fee into your Paypal account.
Just call Yahoo Customer Support and set up an account, they can arrange for payment. You can find phone number at: http://smallbusiness.yahoo.com

I built a simple website using microsoft publisher and I need help uploading my site to my web hosting service
I'm an expert with publisher but i know absolutely NOTHING about html coding. I thought it would be simple to upload my site. I can see my homepage but can't click on any links i created in it. Should I hire someone that knows what they're doing or can I get it to work. I have yahoo hosting service, if you could help that would be great!
what error are you getting when you clicked the links? is it 404?
if so, it's likely that when you used publisher, it made all of the links relative to where they were stored on your computer. when you uploaded it to your live server, the location is different so it's trying to find it in the wrong place.
think of it this way: you're at home and you know that you need to get to the store by going two blocks north then three blocks west. if you change your starting point to your friends house, and you try to use that same path to get to the store you probably won't end up there (unless your friend lives in the same house as you!)
if this is the case I'm not too sure how to help because I've never published a site with publisher. I think try searching the help for "relative url" and it might guide you in the right direction.
Web hosting help-how to?
I have registered a free domain name. Now what I want to know is how do I actually create the site? I found some free hosting options but how does it work? I have pointed the domain to those free name servers but I can't understand where do I actually get to build my website with html codes, the place where I got the free domain or the free web hosting place or some where else? Please help.
Well, there are two *basic* services/servers being used in your situation.
The first server/service is DNS, which stands for Domain Name Resolution. This is kind of like a big phone book for the internet where a name can be used to find a number. Every computer on the net (and even off the net) is assigned a number and that is how you find those computers. So... your free domain name is just a free entry in that internet phone book... a free name that will point to a computer.
The second server/service in your case is a web server that serves up content when someone asks for it. For this to happen , the web server has to be on a publicly accessible computer and (usually) must be able to be found by a publicly known name (from that DNS web phone book of sorts).
A web hosting service is nothing more than someone who offers to sell you space on one of their computers to host your web content. This is usually a good way for small sites to go since securing a computer that is directly accessible by the rest of the world can be a bit daunting.
Most web hosting services will provide you with FTP information you can use to upload web pages directly to the server you are renting space on.
Again, the place where you registered your free domain name is nothing more than your piece of the internet phone book that will point people to your web server on the hosted computer when they type in your "user friendly" name.
Where you build your web pages is entirely up to you. As another poster pointed out, some web hosting sites have tools that allow you to create web pages directly on their hosted computer and usually with templates and other "point and click" type of help. You can also create the web pages locally on your own computer and move them to the host computer when they are ready to publish.
