Virtual Servers

Can virtual servers be used to limit someone's internet speed?
If virtual servers are set up on a wireless network, can they be used to limit the internet speed for certain users?

If you control the wireless access points some will allow you to throttle performance by MAC address.

Hi, I have a PROBLEM with my BELKIN G+ Wireless router and the VIRTUAL SERVERS: FTP and FTPS?
My web server seems to work really, really fine. But I am having extreme trouble with the Inbound FTP ports. The access if available on 192.168.2.3:21 (ftp://192.168.2.3), but not on the external web IP. Why is this happening, can you help? Belkin and my ISP say that it should work in their manuals, but I don't really want to pay 25p a minute in technical support for something that isn't really that worthwhile, but although it is a major problem, it would be cool if it could be usable. I am using WFTPD. I am going to try FileZilla. Same problem, how do I fix it? I don't think that is the answer to the question, I know the ins and outs of most computerised devices, but I think it might be something to do with the ports not working correctly, as HTTP, FTP, etc. Including the ephemeral ports that close connection once downloaded, I am not sure if the FTP port 21 is getting registered as a ephemeral port that closes constantly. But FTP stays open for the time the user is logged on, not when it transfers the file. So I want it to be ephemeral in one way only and that's for the router not to close it per file transfer, but when the users logs out of the FTP. No, virtual servers was specially built for online gaming and even says 'i.e. FTP (port 21)' in the module descriptions. I don't understand why it is letting opening and closing game and HTTP ports, but not FTP, chat server (and client), mailserver, etc. I got rid of FTP6 on IIS7 for that reason. I am currently using Abyss Web Server and WindowsFTPD (WFTPD.exe). Belkin technical (paid) support always says the line you are trying to get on is broken or a constant music tone as I waited for someone to pick it up and they were charging me! It isn't something I aspect from a large company. I will go with LinkSys next time a large problem strikes hard enough for another refund, the last router (the same one), only allowed the one computer on the network and knocked the two off, I refunded. Any of answers to this?

It's an interesting question, but I'm not sure how you would indicate to the firewall that FTP has finished. You can set up trigger ports, whereby when a connection is made on one port (20?) others will open up (21?). It's not clear in that case for how long the connection would stay open. This style of opening and closing is used for gaming, so I suspect it would be useful in your case since you're after a similar outcome -- stay open until I'm finished with the connection, then down. Look for "Triggers" or "Port Triggering" settings on the router. Hope that helps!

What are Virtual servers?
- How does a virtual server work? - How do you create it? - Does it exist in real life?

It is a portion of a real server's resources. You don't, your hosting service does. Yes, if you have a mid sized traffic web site.

Do any "Virtual Servers" exist?
Does anyone know of any type of server where I can basically upload a program and run it (an executable?) I want to run a program but I don't want to keep my computer on 24/7. I'm hoping that something out there exists where I can run a program, shut my computer down while I'm away but that program is still running of another server 24/7. Any sites like that?

here's one: http://www.ultrahosting.com/Plans-VPS.aspx?ServiceID=9&gclid=COnxqcizuJUCFQwsGgodMlcIQg See if it will suit your needs.
