Virtual Hosting
Free Virtual Pet Site Hosting For My Own Site?
I am interested in having my own virtual pet/pokemon site similar to The Pokemon Crater or Neopets, however, Im having a hard time finding a host for this. I would prefer free, or a low cost. I know cheap/free means more advertisements, but I'm running low on cash.
I have been using http://blazehoster.com for free webhosting and it has been excellent for me. I dont think it places any ads on my site aswell.
How to make a virtual host, so i can test exe programs and avoid virus infection in my real system?
READ before answering please! :)
In vista how to make a virtual host temporally to install all the software i think it may have spyware, virus etc. I want to use it on a free space that is not portioned yet and is free.
Be detailed i am kinda dummy on this.
You can download this (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/virtualpc/default.mspx) and load an operating system inside of it. You will need to make sure that you have the operating system disc to install it though.
Alos this link (http://www.wikihow.com/Use-Microsoft-Virtual-PC) will show you how to install and create what is call a Virtual Machine
Good Luck

Would a virus meant for a virtual computer infect the host computer in the download process?
I'm running a virtual computer (Windows XP Home SP3) through Sun xVM VirtualBox 2.0.4 on a Windows Vista Host. The virtual computer is connected to the internet via a virtual adapter that connects to the host's internet connection. Would a virus/spyware that is being acquired by the virtual machine infect the host during the time period when the virus/spyware is downloaded by the host for the guest?
I use Sandboxie, which creates a virtual space away from the hard drive and all of my surfing is done within this virtual space. I also open malware in it for test and research purposes:
http://tinyurl.com/SandboxedMalware
Because you are in a VM, no virus/malware will download to your drive unless you give it the rights to by 'recovering' it.
With any virtual space, everything within it disappears unless the user specifically recovers items from it, so the element of risk lies with the user. I have had no infections after deleting the contents of the sandbox and only recover bookmarks and downloaded files that I specifically wish to.
What are good web hosts that use virtual instead of shared hosting plans?
Something comprable to slicehost (http://www.slicehost.com) in terms of cost.
http://www.1and1.com is the cheapest I've seen so far and I use them. Another alternative would be http://www.easycgi.com but they are more expensive than 1and1.
By the way, I have used 1and1 for years and their customer service isn't that bad either. If you have any additional questions, feel free to contact me.
What does 'virtual hosting' mean ?
I've heard it is a system for hosting many websites on a single server and I would like to know more about it.
You've pretty much head the nail on the head.
Virtual hosting or shared hosting environment is hosting more then one domain on a single computer and ip address.

How do I setup virtual hosts in apache, I need two that do this?
The first virtual host should let me type in localhost and look at the "Index of /" with all of my projects in it. The second virtual host should use a subdomain for the ServerName and have its DocumentRoot set to one of the specific projects.
I have no idea how to arrange the first one, it might not even be necessary since the second VirtualHost should theoretically only kick in when the server sees the ServerName in the headers (my understanding anyway).
This is what I've been trying for the second one but it's not working:
try this (let's assume that DNS redirect www.myserver.com to 10.1.0.2 and this IP was defined on your machine):
NameVirtualHost 10.1.0.2

Very good and affordable host!
which is better. virtual hosting or dedicated hosting?
could you explan the difference?
Dedicated hosting is better because you will have your own computer on the Internet running your website.
Virtual hosting is cheaper because you are sharing a computer with sometimes as many as 600+ other websites.
Dedicated hosting requires that you have a knowledge of website maintenance and computer software, you will either have to administer it on your own or hire someone.
Virtual hosting will probably suit you just fine and requires very little technical know-how.
Shared vs. dedicated vs. VPS / Virtual Private hosting?
I'm currently on shared and would like to get more control over my host so that I can install various software and increase the functionality of my site. Faster db queries and whatnot with dedicated resources would be a nice plus!
My problem is I don't have the traffic or resources to justify a dedicated box. I'm wondering if a VPS or virtualized host would be a good interim solution. This should definitely allow me to install my software, but I'm wondering if the performance would be any better with a relatively small virtual slice (256MB dedicated ram and a small chunk of the CPU reserved).
VPSs main selling point is indeed control without dedicated's price, and you're almost certain to get more cpu/memory per user on the host server than with shared hosting.
Even a 256mb will perform at least as good as shared hosting, and sounds like a good interim solution to me
If you're buying a VPS, bear in mind they require some technical knowledge, although some come preinstalled with a control panel such as cpanel, directadmin or plesk.
Another thing to note is how the VPSs are provisioned. Virtuozzo VPSs allow the companies to oversell and this can in some cases result in extremely slow VPSs. Look out for a Xen-powered VPS as this cannot be oversold so you can be sure your part of the host OS resources really has been allocated to you.
