Virtual Hosting Services

What do I need to create an educational online market place?
How Can I start an Internet service that hosts ,market, and sell online courses for students/clients and instructors. It will not be an "accredited school and will not offer degrees or degree programs. It will be strictly virtual classrooms , Experts at something can come on the site and register and teach others what they know for a small fee. What type of software or hosting program will I need to accomplish something like this. I will like the students to log in and find all of their such as their lesson plan, they can update their preferences and so on.

Take a look at what the Virtual Homeschool Group is doing. The website is at http://www.virtualhomeschoolgroup.com/. They are using Moodle as their LMS (learner management system). You can access information about how to get Moodle for your own site at http://moodle.org/. The Visrtual Homeschool Group also uses live, online classrooms from Elluminate. You can try out Elluminate's free 3-seater classroom by signing up for it at http://www.elluminate.com/vroom/. Live, online training for both of these platforms is available at the VHSG too. I hisghly recommend joining the VHSG Ning social group. It was just set up this week so not many members are yet on, but it is an easy place to start getting to know the people that know and ask your questions. You can access the VHSG Ning group by clicking on the link on the right sidebar on the VHSG homepage. It is a friendly group, you will learn a lot there.

What is the cheapest virtual number service with unlimited forwarding available?
I am a small business receiving between 3000 to 5000 faxes a month. For various reasons, hosted faxing is it for me, since I work from multiple locations. My current hosted faxing (myfax) is killing me in cost. I want to try out some cheaper ones, but am not sure about their reliability. I would like to use the virtual number to forward to whatever is my current fax number. Most virtual numbers layer another 1.5 to 10 cents per minute. My forwarding will be in the same area code, so I see no reason not to get a flat fee service. Do folks like vonage forward from the switch (ie pstn to pstn) or does it get come to my voip box before bouncing back? Thanks in advance for any help.

I personally have not seen any VoIP services that provide for "unlimited forwarding" of incoming calls to a VoIP DID (Direct Inbound Dialing) phone number. Most unlimited packages, that I've seen, pretain to "Unlimited Incoming" calls, or "Unlimited Outgoing" calls, or both. But, when it comes to "Forwarding" of incoming calls, that is usually billed at the carriers "pay-per-call" rate. Why, I'm not completely sure, but I believe it is because the "forwarded" portion of the incoming call has to be handled as a separate outbound termination call and incurs extra costs that the carrier doesn't want to absorb, so it's passed on to you, the user making the call-forward connections. To answer your question as to how a call is forwarded: The incoming call has to be handled by your VoIP carrier as an incoming call. Then, according to your account settings, that incoming call initiates a new outbound termination call directed to the forwarding phone number you want your calls redirected to. So, there really are two separate charges incurred. The first charge is for receiving the Inbound call (from the PSTN telephone network). The second charge is for the termination charges to redirect that inbound call as an outbound call to the forwarded destination on the PSTN telephone network. When carriers sell you an "Unlimited" package, they have to pad the charges to average out what the "average" per-minute use is predicted to be. If you exceed those predicted per-minute charges, they start to lose money. Be assured that once they start losing money, you will be hearing from them asking you to upgrade to a higher rate business account. This is also why carriers have "Residential" vs. "Business" accounts. It is expected that Residential accounts will have much less calling volume than a Business account, and thus, the rates follow anticipated call volumes.

im trying to run programs on a virtual pc (xp pro) that wont work with vista 64 with no success.?
i have a windows vista x64 os hosting a fully licensed version of xp professional on the microsoft virtual pc 2007. i seem to be unable to run xp based programs that aren't compatible with vista. shouldn't i be able to run the programs as if the vista doesn't even exist on my computer? i have a separate hard drive dedicated to the xp on the virtual pc im running a toshiba Satellite with 4 gig ddr2 and 2, 200gig hard drives with vista 64 as the primary (host) OS, i have installed the windows virtual pc 2007 service pack 1, and i have windows xp pro as the virtual OS. am i mistaken that the virtual pc should act as a complete separate OS as if it was installed in a separate partition (or computer)? id simply like to keep the vista and be able to run "non vista compatible" programs on the xp in my virtual machine. if i could at least get musicmatch v10 to work, id be forever grateful i am aware that some progams can have settings changed in properties to "emulate" as if they are running in 98,xp,2000, me, etc. however in the vista x64 this doesnt work nearly as well. and since im running 4 gig ddr2 a 32 bit version of vista is out of the question. i have enabled all the drivers and hardware resources to the virtual machine, it uses the internet, graphics, and sound card without issue. im honestly stumped in response to the questions on what musicmatch can do that others cant is the very simple supertagging method and ability to add the album art that i have never come cose to finding in another program. windows media player simply has no comparison when it comes to adding album art and tagging ease. simply put musicmatch 10 has no equal i have yet to find a better program than musicmatch for audio playing and sorting

The guest OS has absolutely no notion that it's running inside Virtual PC. So you are correct in thinking the virtual PC would act the same as a separate computer.

Making own WebHosting Server??
Is there a way to create my own webserver to host websites? I know many companies offering 'virtual servers', but I am thinking if there is a way that I can buy another PC and convert it into web server??? Appreciate if anyone can give me some tips, or redirect me to information website? I have a small business, but I am fed up with hosting services as very often websites are not accessible, I can work on it because control panel link is slow etc etc. Thanks folks!

yes, you can. Get a dedicated computer. put a web server on it like apache(http://www.apache.org). You will probably want linux(www.linux.org) because its fast, safe, and secure. Then get a domain name from a registrar set its dns to the public dns server(http://soa.granitecanyon.com/). Then set the records there to point to the ip address of your web server(get this from your ISP, you will have to pay a price for a static IP. You will also need knowledge of BIND). Then wait 24 hours to synchronize. You should get computer people to do it for you. You will also want a T1 connection if you expect a lot of hits.

Home based business in a small community...?
i am starting a home based business in my small town community. the business is purely over the internet using a hosted service. Do I need to be concerned with any local ordinances for a web-based service? There is no inventory, foot traffic or goods of any kind. It's basically a blog... I'm just wondering what to consider from a municipal standpoint. My local community is 'podunk' and I'd rather not have to go before city counsel to gain approval to do such a thing. They've been known to shoot down business proposals for the city because it wasn't what 'they' wanted even know the community wanted it... Since it's a virtual business, do they have any jurisdiction?

If its virtual they have no say. They won't even know you are doing it more than likely.

I am starting a website, and I want it to be a cooperative effort of talented web designers; how do I find 'em
The website will be a comprehensive, one-stop resource for small to medium sized US companies wishing to reach out to world /global markets. Our site will serve as a virtual "export division" for our clients, and we will create and manage a dedicated export website for each of our clients for this purpose. We will be able to refer a great deal of business to the designers, SEOs, webmasters, artists, fulfillment services, e-commerce pros, hosting organizations and other web and e-commerce service provides due to our captive relationship with a growing number of clients. In effect, our website will be a profitable, real-time showcasing mechanism for creative, competent, aggressive web professionals who participate in the creation and operation of our "master" website. I am certainly amenable to using a number of professionals as part of a cooperative development team. This website, although rather complex, will be a dazzler, as it must. I seek true artists, visionaries and technologists!

You could post this as a project on some of the online sites such as elance.com, guru.com, ifreelance.com or even craigslist.org. These are great resources for finding web designers, programmers etc.

If you're good at reading things about diagnostics on computers, can you please rate mine?

Once upon a time, this computer would have been top of the line; however, times have changed substantially. Your video card still uses AGP, which limits its capabilities. PCI Express is today's technology. Also, half a gig of RAM is going to limit what your computer's capabilities are. I'd recommend 1 gig minimum, 2 gigs to be comfortable. CPU technology has advanced dramatically from single core to double core or quad cores. Also, your single core CPU is quite slow, even for single core standards. If you only do word processing and very light gaming, you should be fine with this machine. Otherwise, I'd look into upgrading or getting a new one entirely. If you're looking into a replacement that can run anything you need it to, do not hesitate to contact me.
