What type of web hosting is need to run a social network internet website?
what features are need to be provided by the webhost? what things are needed to be allowed? is it possible to run such of a site, on say an unlimited webhosting feature purchased from ebay?

Buyer beware on ebay. If you want to runa social networking site you are going to need a LOT of bandwidth and a LOT of disk space, and you are going to need it to be highly scaleable. Social networking sites get a lot of traffic with people posting and downling some big content (i.e. videos, music, and pictures) which means you are going to need a hosting company that has a lot of servers and a plan that will let you grow depending on your needs. Also you are going to need a host that will allow many different kinds of scripts to be run on the server, probably at least php, perl, and mySQL, in order to store and recall information for a huge database of users. The best place to start would be with a company that allows you to use all these scripts on their server and has packages where you can get as much disk space and bandwidth as you need... it's going to be costly tho to get a plan with that scaleability.
