Unix Hosting
Difference betweem Windows and Unix/Linux website hosting?
Many web hosting companies advertise different prices for Windows and (L)Unix web hosting. What is the difference between the two?
Thanks
LAMP will give you the most bang for your buck... (Linux Apache MySQL PHP)
It's far more reliable, doesn't crash nearly as much, does not have all the security issues as Windows/IIS. Uses far less resources and you can virtual server far more sites on the same hardware as opposed to running Windows/IIS.
As for server side languages... I am biased to PHP. There's tons of premade scripts out there to get you started... things like WordPress for blogs to phpBB for message board.
image hosting unix or windows?
we are running websites around 10 - 11 and all these website pull the image image from one image hosting server which is our own.
but now it is creating problem in pulling images the images are not pulled at once they have to refreshed many times.
we host around 20000 images and they all are pulled from different websites.
or if any one could tell what image hosting should we use........
windows or unix or any thing else.
with benefit tooo
UNIX systems are the defacto standard when hosting websites. Windows systems simply aren't reliable or secure enough. They also have problems with restricive licenses and massive costs.
Use the UNIX system as an image cache. Load balance accross multiple systems, if required.
Data Warehouses - Best technologies for hosting, why unix / oracle? Best way to get data from Iseries to oracl
unix is generally preferred on hosting machines because it has less downtime (some have been reported to run for years without slowing down from its originaly speed and without rebooting) and i think its more secure too
whats the difference between unix and linux? any difference?
i am on the network solutions website and they talk about hosting with unix. What is this? will this limit by web hosting capabilities? thanks in advance!
Linux was originally based on MINIX, which is a UNIX-like OS.
Generally, when people say UNIX, they mean systems that are in compliance with the POSIX standard.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/POSIX
Linux and UNIX share a lot in common as Linux is mostly POSIX compliant. (And most of the popular software that runs on one runs on the other)
Basically, the two systems are so muck alike that anyone who has dealt with one should not have much trouble with the other.
Hosting with Unix will not 'limit' anything, especially with any differences between Unix and Linux. Both will most likely be running Apache and both should have all the same or similar features. Look at the features offered by the host and don't worry so much by the fact that they run UNIX.
The difference between UNIX/LINUX and Windows hosts can be significant, but again focus on the features and the price of the hosting plans.
Can someone provide me with information on all the UNIX functions need to host your own mud shell?
Mud hosting shell host unix host
Im looking into running my own mud hosting company which is the reason I chose to ask this question
Do you really mean MUQ, the next-generation UNIX based virtual world server that is now publicly available?
MUQ autoconfigures and compiles on most major Unix variants (including Irix, OSF/1, Linux, Ultrix, SunOS, NeXTStep and AIX) with a simple "make".)
True user shells: Many servers hardwire the user interface into the server. Unix makes the user shell a separate unprivileged process, allowing users to individually select whatever interface style they wish.
MUQ does too: The user shells are coded entirely in-db and require no special privileges. The standard MUQ distribution provides a selection of shells, and in addition a number of third-party user shells have already been written, and it seems safe to say that more are on the way.
Anyway, if this is what you mean, and I think that it is, here is the link...:

Trying to rlogin with exceed to unix host but cannot get any display on pc.Can see on unix that i am logged in
I am trying to rlogin to a unix host from my laptop using exceed. I know in the unix world I have to use "xhost +" on my home host in order to set my display back from a remote login but don't have a clue why i cannot get the pc to display. I am new to exceed (version 9.0). I run exceed with "Xsession". I specify "Start Method" as RLOGIN (TCP/IP), "Program Type" as X Window, my User ID,password, host (full domain), and host type are set. I have a command line -xterm -display [ip address of my pc from ipconfig]. I can see on my unix host that I am logged in, but i do not have the xwindow on my pc.
add :0 at the end of the IP address. Also, I suggest using ssh instead of rlogin. rlogin passes your password in plain text, so anyone snooping can grab it. ssh is secure.
What skills are required to operate a web hosting company ?
I want to buy a web hosting business that already has customers , but I'm not sure what skills and knowledge are needed .
I own several websites and know basic knowledge about uploading a website , URL's , and know that the server space has to be leased and resold to customers according to their bandwidth and size of site .
However, Do I need to know Unix , Linux , or Perl or other programming languages ? If so , can this be out sourced reasonably ?
system admininstration/php/mysql knowledge/network security/network monitoring. If you do not know any of these you may want to hire a web developer for a month or two. Check websites like http://definitivelab.com/
IBM_HTTP_Server/6.1.0.3 Apache/2.0.47 (Unix) PHP/5.2.1 Server at hosting.bsnl.in Port 80?
This is the text Apache-based webservers add to canned error responses... what's the question?
When switching webhosts, can you transfer a website that runs on a Windows server, onto a UNIX server?
All of the webhosts when signing up, offer transfer of your website from the original host's servers to their own servers. Does it matter if the original server was Windows based, and can that easily be transfered to a UNIX/Linux based server?
All your scripting will probably have to be re-done, like "send me a message" forms. On a Windows server, your server-based scripts are usually ASP, on a Unit/Linux they are usually PHP. Your database will also probably be different. Stock up on aspirin.
Disable Unix Os case sensivity?
I have just shifted my windows image hosting to unix image hosting.
I use this for hosting images for my website. But the problem is that the images are not displayed due the case sensitive of unix platform.
I have heard that one can disable the case sensitvity of unix but i don't know how to to that, does any one has done this if yes then please tell me too how to do it.
You cannot disable case-sensitivity on the unix OS.
It sounds like your webpages are referencing image files in the wrong case. You could run a dynamic URL changer for 404s. However, it's best to cleanup your filenames (move them to all lowercase and no spaces) and update your webpage references.
