Terminal Server

What exactly is a Terminal Server and how does it work?
First of all, I am not an IT person. Please keep in mind when responding. We are trying to provide remote users with access to an application residing on our network. We use VPN for security purposes, but the application runs slowly when accessed remotely. Someone suggested that a Terminal Server might help with this problem.

Originally, a terminal server was intended to serve simple keyboard input & screen output more than the heavier data handled by current network pipes. The connected client was treated like an old-fashioned terminal and all processing was done by a virtual client on the server. If your slowdown is caused by application/CPU overhead, the Terminal Server is not likely to help. If the slowdown is caused by pumping lots of data over slow links, it might. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terminal_Services first, then visit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terminal_Server For some details that may help you.

How to set up Users sessions in Terminal Server in Windows 2003 that does not have Active Directory?
If we want to have remote users, which are not part of Active Directory or AD is not implemented on the Server, log onto the Terminal Server thru common logon and once they gain acess into the Terminal Server...they can log on to the application or the application automatically launches n they can then validate into that app. with their respective IDs and passwords. How can this scenario be implemented without the use of Active Directory? Any helpful suggestion/advice would sure be appreciated! TIA...:)

create a group and then give them access like remote users but you have to create a group in the AD. then manage. hope i have helped

Can i turn a regular computer terminal into a server?
a terminal to a server that hosts user accounts, that connects via ethernet to different terminals?

A server is just a high speed terminal specialized to host and take on more work than a normal PC would. So that's a yes. You will need to install the correct server software or configure it correctly. Will the speed be sufficient? That's for you to find out. If you are hosting user accounts, you maybe be safe with just a P3 or higher. Any big batch data processing will require much more muscle.

what are the pros and cons of setting up a terminal server?
why would someone want to setup a terminal server versus just using logmein.com or a vpn software?

A terminal server would give you faster and more complete access. It's built into windows and doesn't rely upon a thirdparty component. However, there are all sorts of issues that have to be dealt with to work with it across the network, such as security, firewalls, etc. It's probably best to use something simpler (like the freeware UltraVNC) to provide remote access, if you want it to be simple. Ps. A VPN is just a virtual private network. It does not give you remote screen access. If you setup a VPN you could use terminal services in a more secure manner.

May switch I would like to know if anyone knows the good and bad of citrix and terminal server.?
We are currently running Citrix with 13 locations. It works but its slow. I am going to up the server from 2 gig ram to 4 gig of ram to see if this helps. What I was wondering is, Citrix is expensive, Using Terminal Server is cheap. There is no equiptment to buy and the license is cheap. I would like to know, if I go that route, will it be as fast, or slower than citrix?

anything using remote desktop is gonna be slower. whats your bandwidth pipe between sites ? How slow is citrix locally to the presentation server ? are you using a multi-cpu server to handle more threads ?

How to boot form pxe enabled lan card (diskless client) to windows terminal server 2003.?
I have a terminal server running. Now I know that I can boot from a diskless client using bootROM to terminal server, But i dont know the required configurations, settings and tools. Please somebody help me for the above purpose and give me detailed instructions. U can contact me on jameermulla@yahoo.com. Thanks in advance.

you will probably have to change the BIOS setting to allow it to boot to the NIC after that you will need to have an IP address for the client and the information of the server you want to connect to, IP address subnet mask etc.
