Can anybody pride tips on starting a webhosting business?
My interest is to provide websites for special events, such as weddings...I am learning the ropes still. I would like for people to be able to plan their events, share pictures, share videos, access to blogging, advertise their gift registries, create bio's, etc. Any help is greatly appreciated...
May be you can contact a web designer at website like http://definitivelab.com/ .
Has anybody actually used the bandwidth and space of these webhosting companies?
Companies like Dreamhost, ipowerweb, powweb, promise ridiculous amounts of bandwidth and space, but does ANYBODY actually use over 20GB bandwidth and still be able to enjoy the low cost of shared hosting?
I can't help but think it's misleading advertising because they know its unlikely anybody can take advantage of that without : reselling, streaming video & radio, porn, illegal piracy...etc.
Ok, one answer so far, I want answers that are CONSTANT not "I did it once" because it happens, you can get dugg sometimes too, it happens, but not monthly./
I actually over exceeded my bandwidth by mistake one time. I had made a picture video of a flood in our local area, and passed the link to all family and friends. Somehow a local news channel had gotten a hold of it, and praised it on the 10 pm newscast. The video was getting played so much after that, that I actually had to shut the site down. So now instead of using a hosting provider for this kind of stuff, I run my own server and so far Time Warner has been leaving me alone on the bandwidth issues.
Hope this helps

Please Help me Choose A Reliable WebHost for my Celebrity Related Wordpress blog with 2000 pageviews a Day?
Please Help me Choose A Reliable WebHost for my Celebrity Related Wordpress blog with 2000 pageviews a Day. I would also like to host my 3 other small blogs. So it would be nice if the webhost allows webhosting for unlimited domains or more than 4 domains. Please share you preferences. Tell me where you host your blogs/websites. Thank you.
I've had a lot of luck with Dreamhost (dreamhost.com). They have awesome tech support, unlimited domains and subdomains, and one-click installations of software like WordPress and phpBB.
I also find Dreamhost's prices totally reasonable - it's $7.95 a month for more than 170 GB of storage and around 1.7 TB of bandwidth. They also have discount codes to make it even cheaper, like this one for up to $90 off hosting fees:
Promo code: wordpressdeal
I've used Dreamhost for WordPress blog hosting for years. The one-click installations and upgrades are huge time savers. They had some growing pains last year when they became really popular, but now that they've upgraded their systems and facilities, I've had no problems with unscheduled downtime. They can easily handle your 2000+ pageviews per day.
Is there a way to use an FTP server like a Samba server for file sharing.?
I have an online webhosting account with 2 domain names and 120GB of storage. I can upload and download files via FTP fine. What I would like to be able to do is use this FTP space like a Samba Server for group file sharing.
if you own the server, you should just install an ftp server and add user accounts to it. or enable anonymous logins. but doing this (I mean enabling free acces to the files&folders of your site) is at least risky...
I think you should define just one folder as shared.
although, if you don't own the server, you should ask your ISP about their guidelines of leting you run other softwares on their stuff.
Can you tell me some webhosting sites?
I know www.yourfilehost.com and www.rapidshare.com but can u tell me more such sites which can help me store my data and share it.
Please state:
1) All such sites u know and
2) The site which you think is the best.
Thank you
I mean... to UPLOAD FILES AND STORE IN THE WEBSITE
and also it should be free like it is free to upload to yourfilehost.com or rapidshare.com and when the link is given to the friend he can visit it to download the data

Why is my site painfully slow?
I just signed up for yahoo hosting a few weeks ago. I have a photoblog with new pics almost daily. Before yahoo I was on a dedicated server. I understand that yahoo webhosting is on a shared server but it shouldn't be this slow. At certain times the speed is fine but most of the time it takes almost a minute for my first page to load which is ridiculous. Why is it so slow?
I have noticed this as well. More than half of the time I access my site it's dirt slow and the content doesn't seem to matter.
If you're on the $11.95, or so, monthly plan then we are probably just getting the bare minimum for bandwidth.
Anyone have experience with GoDaddy?
I'm thinking about hosting my business websites on a shared host with them. Their "Unlimited Plan" says you can host multiple websites under the one plan. Do they really act like separate websites? Any comments on GoDaddy webhosting in general from experience would be helpful.
All shared hosting plans force you to share a server with other people. However, in the general nature of websites, if you mean that they act like separate websites with separate domains, then yes.
All websites that you own will all be under your share of the server, but you must buy a domain to make your server seem 'individual' from the rest of your websites. Otherwise, you may have a website, but no way for people to access it. Domains are what separate the websites.
A warning as well. Most 'unlimited' plans have, in fine print, a 'fair usage policy' where you are in fact limited to CPU usage on the server; where you are meant to share the CPU power with hundreds of other users on that server.
Does Anyone Have a Yahoo Store? Hard to Setup?
I sell my vintage jewelry at major online auction house and other vintage jewelry online venue however I would like to incorporate selling from my own website. I have yahoo webhosting but found setting up a store extremely NON user friendly. I am pretty tech saavy but I was amazed that with all the frivilous templates they have for everything else, they don't just have a "store" template where listing the items is all set up. Maybe I am making it harder than I need to. Does anyone have a yahoo store and willing to share how to set it up?
If you have the merchant solution package, it has a Yahoo Store Editor, and it comes with a builtin default template. There are two very different ways to create a store: webhosting file manager with store tags, or Store Editor. http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/store/store-38.html has a comparison of the two.
With Store Editor, if you don't mind using the built-in default template (which will create a store look-and-feel like many others, like this demo store http://acme.store.yahoo.com/ ), is very easy. You can create section page or item page completely through the store editor, and then publish. This simple template allows you to publish your store in minutes. See the following information for how to get started and basic editor help:
http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/store/edit
and http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/store/edit/edit-31.html
For advanced users, you can use the Store Editor advanced mode to create your own templates, which uses a language called RTML (http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/store/edit/advanced/advanced-09.html ). This is a lisp-like language and there are lots of Store Designers specialized in RTML to create stores for their clients.
I found Ytimes (http://www.ytimes.info/index.html ) has a good collection of resources for creating a Yahoo Store.
