Do you have a Domain Controller?

do you need a printer server to share a printer on a network?
im trying to hook a printer up to a wireless network that'll most likely have 3 computers on it and iim trying to share a single printer on the network so do i need a printer server to do so

You can use one of the computers and use SHARING. But you can also get a USB Print Server from STAPLES for under $70. I recommend that you use a WIRED version. You aren't taking your printer anywhere, and the wired version is easier to set up.

how can i share the printer with the windows server 2003 users.?
i share the printer from my windows server 2003. i login as a user1 in sys1(xp pro)(that system is in my LAN) that time it ask me to install the printer i just install the printer. then i login as a user1 in sys2(another system in my lan) that time it ask me to install the printer once again. so every systems in my LAN ask me to install the drivers for the user1.

each desktop is creating a new profile on the new machine. The only thing you can do is to implement roaming profiles that will carry attributes from the server. But make sure you have a good LAN and a good server because alot of the stuff that normally gets stored on the desktop and is quick to look up during setup is now on the server and has to be pulled down to the PC.

printing in micosoft word through a printer server does not work.?
i have a home network and sharing a printer in it by using a debian linux box serving as a printer server. this linux box has cups installed in it, implementing ipp with the client stations. the printer drivers, on the other hand, are all installed on the client side. now, printing works well in all apps that i tried it on - except MS Word. notepad, PowerPoint, Excel, Acrobat Reader, etc all works. except Word. which is wierd. perhaps Word is using the printer drivers installed locally in a different manner that when it prints it causes a glitch that doesn't happen with the other apps? i've been pulling my hair for days to get this thing to work. i've also checked this problem online many times, but alas, i cannot find a solution... i've already tried reinstalling my office xp

Ms word file may be corrupted, pop your Ms office cd in the cd drive and re-intall/repair Office.

How to install a Printer/ Scanner onto Server 2003?
Can anyone help me as i need steps on how to install a printer/device onto a client/Server network, with its own IP address. I am using Windows Server 2003 and my client machines are running Windows XP Professional. Also i need to know howto share the printer to the client machines. If anyone can help me it will be very useful. The printer will be connected to the switch

To answer this question I would need to know it it is a network attached printer? or a printer connected to the server via usb or printer port. Answer is different in each case. If the printer is atached to the switch, give the printer an IP address. This should be detailed in the manual that came with the printer. If you do not need to manage the print job you can then set up each computer to print to directly to the printer. When you set up the printer on the computer, select that the printer is a local printer and not a network printer. You will get to a window that asks what port the printer is conected to. you will need to select a new port and create a port for the ip address of the printer. Once you have created the IP port for the printer the rest of the new printer wizard will be straight forward and you will be printing directly to the printer. If you need to manage the print jobs going to the printer it will get a little more involved. First you will need to set the printer up on hte server. Do this like you did above and then when it asks if you want to share the printer say Yes. Then you will need to go to each computer and go through the print wizard but this time select that the printer is a network printer and give the path of the printer on the server \\Server_Name\Printer_Share_Name then complete the wizard. These are just general steps if you need more information let us know and I can try and give more details.

How do I reduce power consumption on a computer from which my printer is shared?
I share a laser printer on my desktop in the basement, so I end up leaving the computer on all the time so we can send print jobs from the laptop at any time. At one time, I used my SMC router to share the printer, but it doesn't work anymore since I reinstalled Windows XP on the desktop. I can't remember how to set the router as a print server. Is there some kind of standby mode for the desktop so that it can still share the printer even if it is running in a low-power state?

There's a print driver you need to install on the SMC routers. You can download it from the SMC site below. You'll need to select the specific model number of your router so that you get the right driver. It then shows up in Windows as a standard printer port. This is the best option rather than leaving a computer on just to print. It's bad enough to have to keep the printer on, especially if it's a laser printer... If you use low power standby on the computer/print server, you'll have to send it a wakeup packet, which is typically called a "magic packet." I'll let the link explain how this works for you. I think the print server on the router is your best option. WG
