Shared Media Server
What software should i use for a home media server?
I have 7 computers. (I have 5 roommates that i rent rooms to). I have over 70000 mp3's that need to go into a library on the server and as the library on the main server updates, the rest of the computers need to reflect. I tried ITunes......it works OK but it doesn't meet expectations. I would like to use a UPnP client that will utiize the sharing server of windows media player 11. It says you have to have windows vista on the client computers but i'm sure there is backend software that can also do this as the other computers aren't ready for windows vista vs my two.
jesus b. i know how to map network drives and share folders on a workgroup. I'm asking for software that monitors these mapped drives for graphical music libary rather than browsing through the mapped drive/folder manually.
this is really easy:
put your songs in the shared folder..
then on each PC go on My PC , menu tools.. map drive ... map the shard folder as a new hard drive on each PC and that it .. every time you add a song in your server the will get the song in their Virtual HD .. ..
i hope this can give you a good idea about how to do it...

PS3 Media Server problems?
I want to stream media files from laptop to ps3. I'm using Windows media player 11 and have successfully watched movies, listened to music, etc. But then sometimes, the PS3 can't find the media server. All the settings for sharing are set to the proper settings on my laptop but sometimes the ps3 can't seem to find the stream coming from my laptop.
How can I make the media sharing more reliable or should I try to find another program?
I'm glad you ask I have the same problem, My PS3 can find and play music and video from my sons Vista PC but not from my Vista laptop with all the settings as for as I know the same.
You may want to ask this to the computer people, I think it is a firewall issue on the laptop but as of yet I haven't figured it out.
How do i alow my pc to share media with my ps3 ?

i heard that i have to allowed my pc to share my media with the ps3 but i can't figure out how i did it with windows media player but the ps3 don't appear in the list
oh yea i've gone through that, its pretty simple (using vista) go to your network and sharing folder, set up media sharing and click change under Medis sharing to see all the devices you can communicate with. Your Ps3 will probobly show up as unknown, unless you have a ton of things that can connect it will stick out, set it to allow and your ps3 should pick you up right away and see your files (keep in mind to see videos go under videos under xmb etc etc)
also if you want to add me as a friend my ID is Loucetios

Setting up a DLNA Media Server
Set up the DLNA Media Server so that it can be used by the PS3™ system. The following devices can be used as DLNA Media Servers.
* Devices that support the DLNA standard, including products of companies other than Sony
* Microsoft® Windows® XP or Microsoft® Windows Vista™ personal computers with Windows Media® Player 11 installed
When using an AV device as a DLNA Media Server
Enable the DLNA Media Server function of the connected device to make its content available for shared access. The setup method varies depending on the connected device. For details, refer to the instructions supplied with the device.
When using a Microsoft® Windows® personal computer as a DLNA Media Server
A Microsoft® Windows® personal computer can be used as a DLNA Media Server by using Windows Media® Player 11 functions.
1.
Start Windows Media® Player 11.
2.
Select [Media Sharing] from the [Library] menu.
3.
Check [Share media].
4.
From the list of devices under the [Share media] checkbox, select the devices that you want to share data with, and then select [Allow].
5.
Select [OK].
Setup for the DLNA Media Server is completed.
Hints
* Windows Media® Player 11 is not installed by default on a Microsoft® Windows® personal computer. Download the installer from the Microsoft® Web site to install Windows Media® Player 11.
* For details about how to use Windows Media® Player 11, refer to the Windows Media® Player 11 Help feature.
* In some cases, original DLNA Media Server software may be installed on the personal computer. For details, refer to the instructions supplied with the computer.
Playing DLNA Media Server content
When you turn on the PS3™ system, DLNA Media Servers on the same network are automatically detected and icons for the detected servers are displayed under (Photo), (Music), and (Video).
1.
Select the icon of the DLNA Media Server that you want to connect to under (Photo), (Music), or (Video) in the home menu. All available folders and files that can be played by the PS3™ system will be displayed.
2.
Select the file that you want to play.
Hints
* The PS3™ system must be connected to a network. For details on network settings, see (Settings) > (Network Settings) > [Internet Connection Settings] in this guide.
* When the method of allocating IP addresses has been changed from AutoIP to DHCP under the settings for the network environment, perform another search for servers under (Search for Media Servers).
* The DLNA Media Server icon is only displayed when [Media Server Connection] is enabled under (Settings) > (Network Settings).
* The folder names that are displayed vary depending on the DLNA Media Server.
* Depending on the DLNA Media Server, some files may not be playable or operations that can be performed during playback may be restricted.
* You cannot play copyright-protected content.
* File names for data that is stored on servers that are not compliant with DLNA may have an asterisk appended to the file name. In some cases, these files cannot be played on the PS3™ system. Also, even if the files can be played on the PS3™ system, it might not be possible to play the files on other devices.
Searching for DLNA Media Servers manually
You can initiate a search for DLNA Media Servers on the same network. Use this feature if no DLNA Media Server is detected when the PS3™ system is turned on.
Select (Search for Media Servers) under (Photo), (Music) or (Video). When the search results are displayed and you return to the home menu, a list of DLNA Media Servers that can be connected will be displayed.
Hint
(Search for Media Servers) is only displayed when [Media Server Connection] is enabled in (Network Settings) under (Settings).
Can I set up a media server on my PS3 but not buy using Windows Media Player?
For some reason I can't download WMP11 so is it possible for me to configure sharing on a program like Picasa2/iTunes etc.? How?
yes! get TVersity it is free and the best media server
there are others like Twonky media server and Nero Home, ive tried them all... twonky costs $$$ but it is the easiest to install
TVersity is the best though... it translates videos to work on ps3 so any video or music type will work!
make sure that UPnP is enabled on your router and on ur pc... if not go to the help and FAQ on TVersity.com
how do I get ps3 to connect to media player on my laptop?
I have dell inspiron 9400 with vista and norton 360 v2. In norton I have allowed windows media player, I have turned on media sharing. how do I get it to find my ps3. My ps3 keeps saying it can't find any media servers. Do I have to go through a router or can I do it without one? This is beginning to bother me big time.
you use a usb cable. you first plug the usb cord into the ps3 then into the laptop. then you turn on the laptop .get onto media player. then you should be able to find it. it worked for me.oh ya i did it without a router.
Playstation 3 80 Gig File sharing with windows media player 11?
Ok, so when I go into WMP 11 click library options, then click on media sharing. Then i'll go to the ps3 80 gig and search for media servers, it does not show up in the devices box. What do I need to do to fix this? I have tried downloading 3rd party software, such as tversity and this does not work either.
Are you sure you setup tversity correctly?
I actually got it to work by following these instrcutions:
http://www.coderetard.com/2008/06/22/turn-ps3-into-a-media-server-with-tversity/
Try going through it again, and good luck?
