Shared Hosting Uk
What is a good UK host for Drupal and/or phpBB? Are there any reliable shared hosting packages?
I've been looking at the forums while there is a good choice of hosts in the USA I couldn't find any decent reviews of UK hosts. Most if not all of my users will be in the UK so it seems to make sense to have the server based here.
My domains are registered in the USA with Godaddy, does that mean all the HTTP requests will go through USA anyway?
1: pomirc is not based in the UK, it doesn't look like it's going to last 6 months, it isn't hosting any proper websites and generally appears very unprofessional. I'm not really looking for any of those things. No offence, but to be honest I could probably knock up something better myself.
@parker_94: The IP's for your host are all under a /18 based in Dallas, TX. I'm looking for something in the UK. I'm not really interested in an account with a reseller, my site could be taken down any day! Good luck with your design efforts though. Try to get some work experience through your friend Keisha and maybe you'll go places.
@Dave G: I'd like to believe you but I have dark suspicions about your motives. The affiliate link looks a lot like the stuff I see in my spam box warning me about updating my paypal account. Regarding the server's location, why do we have mirrors on the internet, why do big corporates set up hosts across the globe, for fun?
For anyone finding this through google in "the future" here are some hosts with half-decent reviews, mostly found on drupal.org.
In no particular order the less-well known:
http://www.mythic-beasts.com/ - the shell accounts
http://www.machinenetworks.co.uk/webhosting/standard/
http://www.xion-internet.co.uk/
http://www.clook.co.uk/services/shared - highly recommended, reasonably expensive
http://shared.nethosted.co.uk/plans/ - don't seem quite as good as the others
http://www.ukshells.co.uk/webhosting/ - linux shell account
http://www.rapidswitch.com - very fast, for dedicated / co-located hosting only, shouldn't really be part of this list
And the more prominent (but not necessarily the best):
4uhosting.co.uk - very cheap, all packages include at least 2 mysql databases, some very poor reviews
fasthosts.co.uk - need to pay extra to get 1 mysql database
uk2.net - not clear if there's full PHP support, 1 mysql database
Godaddy needs to resolve ur domain name only once from that point onward HTTP requests are direct.

Does location of hosting matter?
I stay at UK and my target market is UK too. Will hosting my small website in India affect the performance? (Shared hosting)
The prime cause for me to pose this question is that I had already hosted a ".co.uk" website in India but it gets listed in www.google.co.uk
Hi
I dont think so. Nowadays hosting in India is as fast as USA. You got to select tier one bandwidth providers and onlyt have got a nice peer to rest of the world. Also I am in involved in SEO for one of my UK based client who is hosting a clustered server in India. I could say hosting in India hasnt affected the search engine listing. I could gurantee that. I have recommended some of the hosting websites in India, US, Australia who have tier one premium bandwidth. I have been using service of all those I have listed here for around 3 years and I dont find any problem.

Webmaster

Good value UK based domain hosting?
I asked this a few months back, but never got around to actually doing this. I have a domain hosted by a company called Portland, and their service has been woeful, they never answer any emails, and I can't phone them during business hours, so I want to move to a better outfit. I don't want much, I just want my domain name hosting and email forwarding, I don't really need a big website, as I don't really have one, just host the odd file I want to share with people.
Any recommendations?
I use a company called Telivo. The best domain company I have EVER been with. Systems updated straight away, phones answered straight away, everything works as it should but I am VERY impressed with them. Check them out.

Internet Explorer Website Issues?
I have a business website http://www.linehost.co.uk, it looks fine in firefox but the pages are being mixed up in Internet Explorer, here's the page http://www.linehost.co.uk/hosting/shared/ any ideas whats going on?
You need to create a clear div which will make the container boxes stretch to the bottom. This clear div will contain the properties:
clear {
clear:both;
}
If your using dreamweaver it should have picked up on this error for you. Also make sure that your css properties to not force the content out of the container. Padding should be added to the container width.

visa application in uk?
im applying as a nanny in uk,a host family answered,he gave me the travel agency to process my visa,they ask me to send mu scan copy of my passport,and some details,the host family is asking me to share some payment for my visa.the travel agency is asking me to deposit the money tru western union,with the name of the cashier.im thinking is it some kind of a scam..like this going.please answer me.for im really willing to go to uk to work as nanny.thank you
That really sounds like a scam from start to finish - fake job, visa scam. You end up with no job, no visa and no money.
Did the original person put you in touch with all the others?
Do most of them have free webmail addresses?
Do a search for "visa scams" or "immigrations scams"

Is the UK finally back in the fold when it comes to great sporting nations!?
The Beijing Olympics have been great for the UK and just in the nick of time considering that we will be hosting the 2012 games.
We are just about holding onto third position, based on the amount of golds that we have won. Chris Hoy has won three gold medals himself at these Olympic games and I have just learned that in the overall standing for all of the countries of the world, Great Britain is ranked as third in the overall medal haul of the modern Olympic games, behind the USSR and the USA.
PS: I think that Chris Hoy should have shared the spot light as have Phelps and Bolt as he has won three gold medals in this Olympic games alone!
Talking about modern games the USSR changed its name to Russia about 19 years ago.
