Severing

How severing a leaf affects stomata?
Can anybody clarify what the effect of severing a leaf has on the stomata? My guess is that when the leaf is severed it causes more evaporation to take place and therefore other stomata will close to conserve water? thanks

Leaf sections were exposed to CO2-free air, thus excluding interference by the CO2-sensitive system in the guard cells. Stomates did not close in response to change from moist to dry air, whether it passed over the leaf or was forced through the intercelluar spaces. In contrast, the stomatal apertures became narrower if the water potential in the liquid supplying the leaf was lowered. Of solutions with the same osmolality, those with the higher viscosity produced the larger responses. Transient stomatal movements in the opposite direction to the final response were observed upon any sudden change in the water status of the leaf sections, whether caused by varying the moisture content of the air passing around or through the leaf sections, or by varying the water supply. Increased load on the water supply caused temporary opening movements, while improvements in water supply led to closing movements of varying duration. When dry air was forced through the leaf sections, non-sinusoidal oscillations with large amplitudes were sometimes observed. It is concluded that the guard cells are tightly coupled to the water-supply system of the leaf and only indirectly to the conditions in the atmosphere by a negative feedback of transpiration on the water potential in the water-conducting system.

Will the Australian Labor Party be responsible for severing strong ties to the USA ?
I think its both reckless and irresponsible to risk Kevin Rudd ending strong trade and Military ties to the US. Sure China is now our strongest trade partner, but do you trust world stablity especially with 200 Million Muslims on our doorstep ? We owe the ANZUS alliance everything. We need strong ties to continue to grow economically and Militarily. The Aussie $ has passed 90 US cents, highest in 20 years ! Our Airforce has ordered and paid for new US Fighters to replace our F111's, we must maintain the US as our strongest Allie.

I wasn't aware that Rudd or anyone else is planning to sever our ties with the US. It would be a most unpopular and ill considered policy, and would be opposed by most Australians I should think. Developing strong alliances in our own region, especially with an emerging power such as China, does NOT mean throwing out our long standing and entrenched links with the US, links which are valued by most Australians on a number of levels ~ economic, cultural and defence. This is the same sort of argument that was used when our alliances changed from the Uk to the US post WW2, but the dire warnings then were wrong ~ the UK is still our largest source of migrants, one of our main trading partners, a valued ally and recognised as the founder of the modern Australian state. Even if we do move out of the orbit of the US to some degree (something which I don't see happening anytime soon, anyway), there is no reason at all strong ties would not and could not be maintained. You are worrying about nothing, imo. Cheers :-)

Is the color issue of this year's presidential election severing relationships?
With all the racial comments and concerns has anyone learned things about coworkers, family members, friends, and neighbors that they did not know before?

Unfortunately I have. There are a lot of "smart" people out there who use the "N" word in private, tell racist jokes, and would vote for a white child molester before they would vote for a saintly black man. This is nothing new, there is a history of black politicians leading in polls only to lose the election.

How to get over a sibling severing ties with family?
I have a sibling that has severed ties with her siblings and parents. Sibling has accused parents and siblings of horrible things. Some that can be checked out, turned out to be not true. Some that are accusations we don't know. I am having a hard time letting sibling go, likewise the rest of family. It has been l0 years since we spoke to sibling. Sibling lives in our community. help

You can not change how others think, react or live their lives. You are in control of you and your own life, period. You accept and forgive. You keep the key to the door that has been shut in case you ever need to unlock it again.

How much does severing off umbilical cord hurt the baby? Or, it doesn't at all?
Dylansmomma: I don't even remember what I ate yesterday, how could I possibly remember so far back? I was told I did scream my lungs out. Now could it be because of cut cord?

No nerve endings as everyone has mentioned.... HOWEVER you might want to consider keeping the blood from the cord, as it contains a very close useful "stem cell" set of properties that will be helpful in fighting diseases if you baby is born with them or develops them. Cord Blood storage is the process of storing the DNA from that set of cells, in hopes that if your baby has some need for something, you will have the cells to work with that her body will not reject (because it is her). Look at this site and learn all about it. http://www.cordblood.com/

What kind of sentence should a man get for severing a females nipples?
And please save your 'It depends upon the circumstances' rhetoric. No rape. They are sexual partners, give a sentence!

I think govt should not interfere in private matters

Is a fence contractor liable for severing sprinkler electrical lines ?
A contractor hired to build a new fence severed electrial lines used for the automatic sprinkler system. He says that he is not liable due to language in his contract that states that he will not be liable for any damage caused while conducting his business. We understood that the language would apply to bushes or plants damaged, not something totally unrelated to his job. It will cost over $6,000 to make necessary repairs. I realize that this is a legal question, but assuming business ethics, is he even partially liable?

I am an Irrigation Contractor in the state of Florida. I was wondering if this was a commercial site or your home? Because either way $6k is very steep to replace or repair low voltage sprinkler wire. In regards to your question, I am liable in my business if I damage any underground utility regardless of the way my contract is written. I do have a no-fault clause for landscaping etc. that may be damaged while we do new installations, but I have to be very specific on my addendum section to specify what might possibly be damaged. Either way, a small claims court suit would probably scare the contractor enough that he would sub-contract an Irrigation Contractor to reapir the damage at his expense. Thanks Chris

What kind of sentence should a female get for severing a man's penis?
And please save your 'It depends upon the circumstances' rhetoric. Give a sentence!

It does depend on the circumstances I think. Unless there are just women out there running around chopping them off like some sort of Jack the Ripper. If that's the case, then I guess they should get locked up in jail forever before we run out of men with penises. Then we are all screwed!!!

Can a human survive the severing of all nerve tracts in the neck?

No, the respiratory muscles would be paralysed and the person would not be able to breath. Also the heart would slow down without nervous input, although it has an intrinsic (or automatic) rhythm, it wouldn't be able to speed up when required to. Many other internal organs require some nervous input from the brain too: but it would be the breathing thing that would kill you.

9. Some injuries to the body involve a severing of the spinal cord. Explain why all sensations and ?
control of motor functions are lost in the parts of the body below the injury.

The spinal cord is a big thick cable that links the brain to the body. Wheever that cable is severed, the brain can no longer communicate with the body parts whose cables are no longer connected to the spinal cord and consequently not connected to the brain.
