Setup Shared Server

I have a windows xp professional how do I setup a media server that can connect to my Sony PSX3 to share music
The Sony PSX3 has the ability to search for media servers, I want to know how do I get a media server for windows xp?

Media servers are programs that allow you to share your music and video over a network. Itunes and the new Windows Media Player have these options. You need to be running the server on a compter on your network then when you goto your PSX3 you will see the optionto connect to it.. .It was easy for me to set-up. There are many ways and different programs you can use, but, heres what I did: 1. Make sure PS3 is connected to your network 2. Install Windows Media Player 11 on your computer that is attached to the same network 3. In WMP11 go to Tools>Options 4. In the options dialog box click the library tab, then click Configure Sharing 5. You should see all the computers on your network AND an "unknown device" (which is your PS3) 6. Right click on "unknown device" and select Allow Now if you go back to your PS3 you should see a Windows-looking icon at the top of Pictures, Music and Video sections. Use that icon to access your content library. (This assumes that you set up WMP11 so all your media is in its library) I can access any video, music or picture (as long as the PS3 can read the format) from my computer on the other end of the house, I love it! **NOTE: I'm not sure if the PS3 requires a restart for this to work. And another thing I found out was every time you reset your computer you need to re-allow sharing. I always leave mine on so its no biggie, but it could get annoying if you turn it on and off.

Can I setup an ftp server for LAN which is using DHCP?
I want to share files between the computers in the wireless network in my house? Can I setup an ftp server within the network. My network uses DHCP to obtain IP addresses.

If you're only working within your house network there's no problem but why would you use FTP in the first place for this. Are you on client server or peer networking? If C/S you need a DNS server running. For a peer network it's not necessary for name resolution as they use LM announce in most cases. You also don't need WINS for a peer network. Instead of using FTP consider shared resources. If you use XP-pro try turning off simple file sharing for security purposes and keep a tight watch on your wireless security especially if you're using WEP for encryption. A better choice is TKIP/shared key and again if you’re C/S you may use a radius server and WPA2 with AES encryption and 802.11X authentication. This can turn into a can of worms if you're not real familiar with wireless networks. You will also need an FTP server to do what you want. If you need Internet file access you can use dynamic DNS as was mentioned above. Service for that run around $19.00 per year. The one I use most is TZO.COM There are definite security risks with running FTP over the net and careful consideration should be made when planning that. At any rate in a peer network the net bios name of all computers in a common workgroup will be visible and you will be able to mark folders as shared and all users will have access to the files in those folders. Make sure if you do that you're running behind a hardware firewall to your Internet connection! If you're running Linux you may already have the answers!

How do I properly setup my network so that client computers automatically have the printers installed?
Here is the scoop. In my school we have 3 computer labs, each with 30 computers. All of these connect to a new Dell Server running Windows Server 2003, standard edition. The server is setup as a file sharing printer and a print server. Before the school year, we decided it would be nice to not have to walk the kids through setting up the printer, so we logged onto the client machines locally, and added the network printers, beliving that when the students logged on, the printer would already be installed on that machine. Turns out we were wrong. So, I logged onto a computer, through the domain, with admin access and setup the printer. Still, when students log on, there are no printers installed. So, my question is... how do I set this up so that when a new user logs on, the printer is already installed? Thank you!!!

setup file & print sharing on the PC and keep the PCs in the same workgroup Under Control Panel > Network connections > Wireless connection properties, make sure file & print sharing is enabled Then under Control Panel > System > Computer name tab, make sure all PCs are in the same workgroup. Once you can browse to the PC with the printer from other PCs you can click on the shared printer to install it

How to setup a home server?
I have a normal desktop computer with XP. I've installed Apache, MySQL and PHP. I've copied my website to the local root folder. When I type "http://localhost/" or "http://192.168.1.101/" on the browser, the website appears. No problem. I'm using Shared Internet Connection using Linksys Wireless Router. The ip address of the connected computers go from 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.2.149. The problem comes. I can't seem to access "http://192.168.1.101/" from other computers in the home wireless network. The browser shows "The page cannot be displayed". How to fix this? I want my PC to act as a server in the home network. One more question. The external ip addres of the router is 60.50.243.83. I've changed the router settings to perform "Port forwarding". I've changed the settings to forward port 80 requests to my PC (192.168.1.101). I tried typing "http://60.50.243.83" on another computer's browser outside the network. But "The page cannot be found". How can I fix this problem?

Actually There are 2 Questions in it. Resolution for the 1st is Try to telnet 192.168.1.101 80 from any other Machine it the Telnet is Success then Connectivity is good and there is some problem in Apache Web Server settings, May be some Security settings. if Telnet is not Happening then. Try telnet from the same subnet that is 192.168.1.XXX Machine coz u have 2 subnets 192.168.1.XXX and 192.168.2.XXX. and regarding port forwarding do Destination Natting if you have the option in the router its same as port forwarding.

I want to setup a server with windows 2003 server, and i have a question regarding the licenses...?
I want to setup this server as a file server only. For example sharing documents and data across 10 computers, this is going to be the main purpose of the server. I'm not going to authenticate any user from withing the server. Do i still need to buy licenses for this 10 users, even though i'm not authenticating any user from the server? I will have drive c: as a share and my documents on the server, so that the other users could access this drive and folder. Do i need licenses to do this? I'm not creating a domain, with this server. The server will join a domain that is setup with another server. Does this needs additional licenses?

yes you will need a MS License and buy 2003 server operating system. Why don't you download any version of Linux then you will be able to setup a server for free at no cost and all the softwear you will need for networking... Novel Suse Linux is a partner of Microsoft so I would have a look at Open Suse Linux or goto Novels website and check it out web link below

Home network server setup?
I have setup a wireless network in my home connecting several computers. The network works fine. I created a web page and using WAMP and now want to share with the other computers on my home network. What do i need to do to make my main computer to work as a server so that my other computers can view the web page correctly? Flie sharing doesn't work for this. I'm trying to setup the server to work and publish my web page. Just not worldwide, just on my home computers.

With WAMP you are running the Apache web server. Forbidden is telling you the other computers are not can not access requested PAGE. This can be several things. So here is some starting places. First check the requested URL at the client to be sure it matches your real server IP and page name. Lets say the page is on the "server" and the server ip is 192.168.1.10 and you called it mypage.php a request from the Client to http://192.168.1.10/mypage will return the forbidden error as would htttp://192.168.1.10/mypage.htm if you saved the page as php the extension has to match. (in this case the php engine might not be running as well.) Start simple.. put an index.html page on the server and just try the server IP http://192.168.1.10 where the this is the servers IP.. if a page comes back then the server is working.. If you get a forbidden with that and you have an index.html page on the server (do name it index.html) the check the firewalls! In fact just turn the server firewall off for a few minutes to see what is happening! If its not the firewalls then recheck the apache settings Here is the docs page for Apache 2 http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/ and here is a page with your specific question addressed directly http://httpd.apache.org/docs/1.3/misc/FAQ.html#forbidden the FAQs are your friends http://httpd.apache.org/docs/1.3/misc/FAQ.html Let me know

What is the best freeware application to setup a file sharing website that allows gets and puts on Linux?
I just setup a new linux server and want to create a password protected website that has an easy gui fron-end that allows gets and puts via apache. I have been trying to get native apache password protection to work and have had some difficulty. And even with that I can't get the puts to work. Is their a skin or template that I can put onto the box that has a generic gui and password scheme to make this work. This wouldn't be high volume, just for friends type of thing. Thanks for any recommendations.
