Server Hardware

I need help. Confused between database server of PostgreSQL and a hardware db server.?
What is the difference between a database server of a PostgreSQL application and a Database server (hardware) that is located in a network diagram?

There is no difference...the Database Server on the diagram is a representation of a computer running a database application...Postgres, MySQL, MS Sql, Oracle...all require an operating system (on a server) to run.

If I were to build a web server, what hardware components do I need?
If I were to get a web server for a commercial website with moderate traffic, what hardware components do I need? I just need the basic hardware parts of a server.

basicly a server is a computer that has the right os. All you need is a computer with enough memory for what you are planing to put on it and a high speed connection to the internet and a windows server 2003 or the like.

what is the different between the server hardware and server software?

Server Hardware is usually a more robust, better made line of hardware. Server hardware also tends to integrate processor technologies faster than desktop hardware. Examples of Server Hardware are : Xeon Processors, SCSI/SAS Hard drives, RAID controllers (usually with a large cache and battery backup), ECC Registered RAM. Servers also usually come in a rack mountable format. Server software is software which "serves" clients , as well as the Operating System run on the server hardware. Examples include Windows 2003 Server, Exchange Mail Server, SQL/Oracle etc.

What hardware is recommended to run a HL1 server mod?
I'm wanting to run a HL1 mod server with some very expensive plugins. I'd like to know the general range of hardware I should use for this 32 player, HL1, heavily plug-inned server. Info requested: CPU, RAM, Network Connection speed. HL1 = Half Life Sorry for not being clear on that.

server mode, is not to intensive. just fast ethernet, and memory. as much as your system will allow

What Hardware should a server have and what internet connection should a server be connected to?
I want to build a small server and i don't know exactly what parts should i have.

It depends on what do you want to do with it. Having your own server it's quite fun, I have one for myself, I use it to test web pages. I have an Intel mainboard for a 2.8 Ghz P4HT processor with 512 MB, my load average is always 0.1 with about 1 to 2 thousand visits a day, 4 XEN servers and a LAMP powered service. I'll recommend you to take any machine you have round there, install *NIX on it and attach it to a dynamic IP using DynDNS if you want to access it from outside. Internet connections depends on how many traffic do you plan to receive. 2Mbps is quite good

What should it cost to set up an SQL server (apart from the hardware costs of the server itself)?
I've heard something about Microsoft giving SQL server licenses away free now. This doesn't sound like Bill Gates. If I have a server, and want to set up an SQL server running a database of less than 5000 records, how much would it cost?

It SHOULD be free. After all, there are plenty of excellent SQL packages that are completely free. In reality, you can get the express edition for free, and this should be fine for your small database. Of course, Microsoft wants you to buy the full-blown version. If your heart is set on a Microsoft-based solution, you can experiment with the express edition of SQL server (and the express edition of a programming language like C# or VB.NET) If you're using the database in a commercial environment, you should purchase the commercial license (which is expensive.) However, you can have an equally powerful data solution for free if you consider open-source alternatives. The latest version of MySQL compares very well to SQL server, and is totally free (although you can purchase a support package if you want to) You can use MySQL with .net languages, or with open-source languages (commonly Java, PHP, and Python)

What are the basic hardware and software needs for hosting your website on your own server?
I am doing a school assignment on hosting your own website. One of the questions asks what hardware and software is needed to host your website on your own server. I'm hoping someone here can help me answer it. Thanks Sara

If you have a DSL or cable connection you could be onliine in about 2 hours. Equipment: P-II 400mhz or greater RAM 256mb Win2000 Pro (my favorite) I use IIS service that comes wth W2k and XP. Good fo basic hosting. If you have a dynamic IP address you will need a service that will report any changes to the Tier 1 DNS services. I have been using httop://www.NO-IP.com for years. It is free.

What type of server/hardware would I need to purchase to send/receive SMS from the internet? (php scripts etc)
Any help would be greatly appreciated, I need to know what type of hardware I need to buy to get this feature working, and if any one knows any details regarding the costs incurred by intl SMS'ing it would also be of help

You would need (apart from a computer), a mast and antenna and a licence to transmit. Oh, and you'll need multiple repeaters. Or, you can go to the web site of a service provider, like O2 and see if you can send them through their web portal (usually at a small cost).

How can i do a hardware upgrade of a micorsoft sbs 2003 server when only one sbs 2003 server is allowed on the
I have an SBS 2003 server and wantr to upgrade the hardware to an entirely new server. can someone please point me to a method of accomplishing this? FYI - The current server was did not include OEM SBS and the new server has no O/S. It is our intent to transfer the license from the old to the new. Thanks for your responses. One last point - the challenge is not in transfering the licenses, it is that Micosroft does not allow two SBS servers in the same network at the same time and i am not clear from the answers if that or how that is overcome. Thanks again!

There is a migration tool you can use. You will have to install the SBS into the new server then use the migration tool to accomplish this. Honestly its not that hard to do you just need to get the OS onto the new hardware first. If you go to the Server Managment tool there is a License migration tool in there for you to use. If it comes down to it you can call Microsoft and tell them your situation and they will be glad to help you to transfer the license. Another thing you can do is image the server you are currently using and then place that image onto the new server. Norton Ghost or Acronis True Image will do the trick.
