Register Domain Name

Best way to register a Domain Name?
I am looking to create my first website and have a few ideas of how to get a domain name registered, but looking for any tips. My intention so far is to simply purchase the service from any number of web hosting companies. I don't need any web hosting space. Is there a better(cheaper/free) way?

I recommend either Godaddy Economy or the Deluxe plan: http://www.hosttell.com/godaddy/ (prices from $4.74/month - $6.99/month) Price of a discounted domain with any hosting plan is $2.19 or Dreamhost http://www.dreamhost.com/hosting.html Their standard price is $9.95/month ($119.40/year) but you can use the promo code PLUS and get $50 discount +2 Free domain names. Disk space: Unlimited Bandwidth: Unlimited 2 Free domain names Unlimited domains and subdomains Price: $5.78/month ($69.40/year)

How/where can I register a domain name anonymously?
Do you know a website where I can register a domain name anonymously? Can you recommend a specific company? Thanks!

With Godaddy.com, if you pay an extra couple bucks (and sometimes they have a sale and it'll be free) you can register it privately through domainsbyproxy.com. On the WHOIS information, it will show "domains by proxy". For example, here's my private WHOIS information: Domains by Proxy, Inc. DomainsByProxy.com 15111 N. Hayden Rd., Ste 160, PMB 353 Scottsdale, Arizona 85260 United States Registered through: GoDaddy.com, Inc. (http://www.godaddy.com)

Best place to register domain name? Best to host website?
I need a place that is CHEAP that will register my domain name. I need to own the name, not the company I register with. What about good hosting websites?

Well, it depends on how much you want to spend. 1. The cheapest option I know is: http://www.hosttell.com/one/ $3.75/month but they don't offer that much disk space and options. 2. Godaddy has a couple of nice plans: http://www.hosttell.com/godaddy/ 3. For $5.78/month I recommend Dreamhost http://www.dreamhost.com/hosting.html Their standard price is $119.40/year ($9.95/month if you pay yearly) but they currently have a promotion. You can use the promo code PLUS at sign up page and get the $50 discount + 2 Free domain names. This way you get them for $69.40/year ($5.78/month). You can use their huge Disk Space and host unlimited number of sites on a single plan. Disk space: 500 GB Bandwidth: 5000 GB 2 Free domain names Price: $5.78/month ($69.40/year) 4. If you're willing to pay $20+/monthly for hosting I recommend: http://www.mediatemple.com http://www.slicehost.com

How do I register a domain name myself?
I want to know how to register a domain name myself without pating for it from another company.

As one of the others answered here, only registrars have the authority to register domain names (especially if it's a .com). You can't register for one yourself without paying another company to do it, and that's just the way things have been since day 1.

Who is the best company to register a domain name with?
...When I registered a name years ago, it rocketed in price after the first year, is this the same with most companies? I have a new one to register. thanks. thanks, has anyone else used them? I used names.co.uk before.

Personally I use ukreg, address below. They are part of Fasthosts, and whilst I would never use fasthosts for hosting their domain system is really good. They are fairly cheap, and do not lock you in with charges to transfer your domain away to another registrar. You can also renew domains at the same price as you paid for them, they don't put their costs up. The have a comprehensive control panel that allows you to do everything you need to easily.
