Register A Domain Name
How can I be sure that the domain name I register belongs to me and not to the registrar I register with?
I like to register / park a domain name first while I work on the website content. How best to go about it? Are there different prices or one fixed price? How can I be sure that the domain name that I register now belongs to me/my company and can be used with a web host that I have yet to decide? Thanks for advice.
You have a lot of questions. You should go to

These are places where domainers/web site owners/ and new people to the business go for information and chat.
Can you register a domain name without starting a website?
I have a great idea for a website, but unfortunately I don't know how to build the one that I want. I like the name so much that I want to register the name before someone else gets the name. Then when I do start the site I will already have the name registered. But can I do that? And who can I register it with? Who does Yahoo! and Google register their names with I wonder?
Yes, a lot of people own domain names without websites. You just need to go to a registar service that sells them. The biggest player in the game is Network Solutions, but they are usually more expensive. GoDaddy.com is a great service and has great prices, it is what I register my domains with. When ordering, just make sure you do a DOMAIN REGISTRATION and don't add any other service (GoDaddy will try to sell you TONS of add-ons). When you are ready to start the website, then you can look into hosting services and the extra services. If you still have trouble online, pickup the phone and call them, they have good sales support. Beware the "up-sales" though.
If I register a domain name, can it re-direct traffic without paying for web-hosting?
What do you get if you simply register a domain name, aside from the rights to the domain?
Depends on who you register your domain with. Many of the domain registration entities will provide you, for no additional charge, with either the ability to redirect traffic to another domain that you own or, many will also give you the option to have a "coming soon" parking page or a "business card" page. For example, I have used Hostway for domain registrations (among others) and have used their domain forwarding for free.
Do you need a business to register a domain name?

Anyone can register a domain name for business or personal use without restriction. You don't need a license to buy a web domain.
where is a place i can register a domain name that is not a scam?
i want to register a domain name and don't want to go to a scammer place to register it, also I want to register it for 3 years and I don't want to lose it the second it expires, like I want it to be renewable etc. Thanks.
Domains are registered for a year at a time. To purchase a domain name a person goes to a domain register like GoDaddy.com, types in the name they want, if it is avaliable.. you can purchase it for around $10/year.
Two Different Routes About Owning a Domain:
Route 1: Domains are registered for a year at a time. To purchase a domain name a person goes to a domain register like GoDaddy.com, types in the name they want, if it is avaliable.. you can purchase it for around $10/year.
After you purchase the domain, you will need to host the domain, which is around $8-$10 a month for shared hosting.
This is the more expensive route and the route which require more ramp up time faster. The good news is both the domain register company and the hosting company normally is more than happy to help you through any process. I personally use GoDaddy.com for domain purchases and HostGator.com for domain hosting, both are very helpful.
Route 2: I would recommend starting out with blogger.com or wordpress.org. Both are very powerful blogging type sites with many options. Also, both sites also will teach you much needed steps to be able to maintain and manage a real domain.
Once you have an established blog with either of the two, you can then purchase a domain for around $10 per year and run it through blogger.com or wordpress.org for free. This option will save you the monthly hosting fee which is around $10 a month. Both sites have detailed information on how to run your blog through your domain.

I had a company register my domain name and make me a website and they went out of business. How do I get it?
I had a company register my domain name and make me a website and they went out of business. Now I want to get the domain name back and make and maintain the website myself. Does anyone know the process I have to go through to get it? The domain name is www.mylastnameconstruction.com So I shouldn't have any trouble with that part...
thanks!
Is that the actual domain name? If so it's not registered. But I assume you mean
Can you register a domain name anonymously?
If you want to register a domain name for a website (a blog for example) but don't want people to easily know that it is you posting, how can you register without your name showing up any time somebody does a simple "whois" query?
go to http://www.LocoDomains.com and select Private Registration, so people can't see your info
Which is the best Domain Name to register?
There are three keywords that I would like to use when I register my domain name. Should I use all three keywords in the URL or just settle for a general term.
EXAMPLE:
1. travel-usa-uk.com
2. travelsite.com
Option 1 - Uses all three keyword combination, but the name doesn't seem to flow. Combining all three keywords means that I MAYBE able to get x3 time more traffic.
Option 2 - Sounds better and the name is general enough to convey what the site is about. However I MAY get 50% less traffic than option 1 though.
How is option 1 going to give you more traffic?
I say Option 2 all the way.
travelsite.com is much easier to look up and remember.
