Can a desktop computer be used as a print server?
I have two HP printers both with network ethernet ports. Can I use a desktop computer with a pair NICs as a Print Server? I'd like to have them available over my wireless network. I already have a WiFi card in the desktop and its connected to my network. The desktop is running WindowsXP and I'd like to keep it that way.
Perhaps I should have clarified....I want the desktop to act as a WIRELESS print server...
Sure, no problem at all.
Connect your two HP printers to LAN by wire cable. And install HP printer admin tools on your desktop, scan HP printer in the tool, you may install these two printer step by step. And you may need to install extra drivers for those two HP printers for other computers running different OS.

how do I get my mac air to use my belkin wireless print server? ?
I need to connect to my Epson DX9400F which is connected to a belkin wireless print server. I have connected to the printer previously with a usb cable but I would really prefer to be wireless. Any suggestions?
Read the documentation that came with the printer - they probably give you step-by-step instructions. (It's probably just adding a new printer to the computer.)
Can a wireless USB Print server be used for something other than a printer?
What i am wondering is this, i have a weather station that uses a data logger. you can connect this data logger to a computer via a USB port. what i am wanting to do is place the data logger at one end of my house and transmit the data to my computer wirelessly. would a usb print server work for this or is there another device that i could use that would allow me to do waht i want. Thanks.
ok, all seem like very good answers, but nobody seems to know for sure. Now, would anyone know of any device that would allow me to do what i am trying to do? i dont need it to be 2 way communication, just so long as it reads what is being transmitted from the base. i am sure i would have t hook it up directly to the computer for first time use to get it to work with the software but after that it should be as easy as assigning and IP address to the device thru some kind of router or access point, but i need it to have USB port as that is that connection type for my base unti. Thanks for your answers.
Most wireless print servers are "one-way".... they send data out to the printer well enough, but they're very bad at taking data back.
All-in-one machines (printer/scanner compbinations) are notoriously hard to get working through a WiFi print server, for this reason. Some will, some won't
Basically, you would need to contact the manufacturer of your device and ask them.
Can i set up my windows ME laptop to be a print server for my old printer, so my Vista laptop can print to it?
My new vista laptop cannot connect to the HP officeJet due to HP no longer provides that model to work with vista. How can I set up my old laptop Windows Me to be a print server so I can print to it to the HP office jet ?
Sadly in these cases, the end client (in this case your vista machine) still needs the driver to print to the printer, no matter where it's connected.
Is there an XP driver for your printer? I have had some success using them on vista.

where do I connect my print server to?
To enable wired print sharing through a print server, all I have to do is plug the printer directly into the modems ethernet port right? or does it have to be the modems usb port? I know that after that I have to enable print sharing on all my computers and yada yada, So do I plug the print server into my modem using ethernet or usb?
whichever one. If you have a usb cable use usb if you have a ethernet cable use ethernet. It doesn't matter.
Is there a way for my Compaq A3000 all-in-one printer to work with a Linksys wireless print server?
My HP printer died and I want to use my Compaq A3000, but it is on a wireless print server (Linksys 54g) and it is not working. I tried troubleshooting with Linksys, but they say it may not be compatible.
yes it can, but you must configure in windows (Or your OS of choice) that it is a shared printer.
D-Link wireless print server made into a network drive?
I have a D-Link Wireless print server. I would like to plug my external hard drive into it and be able to see it as a drive on the network.
Nothing is impossible, but some things are very unlikely. ;)
What is the model of the print server, and is it designed to also work as a file server?
What kind of external hard drive is it?
The only reference to file service I could find on their web-site was the page describing the DPR-1260, which apparently has an extra ethernet-switch port, since it can do this:
"For extra network connectivity, you can also use the DPR-1260 to provide wireless connectivity to any ethernet-enabled device, such as a computer or network-attached storage (NAS)."
If your external hard drive has an ethernet connection, this might work for you. Otherwise, you will need a computer to do the file service. You can get a used one at a second-hand store for $100.
Do i need a print server for a network ready printer?
I have netgear rangemax wireless router. I Have a wireless network at my home with two laptops connected to my router . I just hooked my network ready Dell 1710n printer to my router via eathernet port. Can i send the print commands from my laptop to this network ready printer without booting up my main computer. Or Do i need a print server for this purpose even though the printer is network ready.
what is the difference between a network ready and stand alone printer. if i need a print server for both of them , then whats the logic of spending 100 dollar extra on a printer just because it says its network ready.
Is there any built in print server in the network ready printer?
I have one desktop and two laptops in my wireless home network. wireless Router and network printer and connected to desktop via eathernet port. Both laptops are connected wirelessly. My main objective is : to be able to send print commands from my laptop and collect the prints from printer with out booting up my desktop comuter.
You do not need a network server for this printer, basically from what I can find you for you you just make sure it has power plug the network cable into the router and into the printer, then you will have to get the IP address from the printer as the printer uses DHCP to obtain an IP automatically, to get the ip of the printer simple press and release the continue button (>) and it should print a status page or something like. Check out the source I have provided below its pretty easy to follow and read.
And I do believe you will need to run the software on each computer for them to be able to print without having to refer to another computer.
Is there a wireless print server that I can plug an external hard drive into?
Space is limited electronically as well as physically. What Im trying to find is a wireless print server I can connect an external hard drive to.
Not sure other makers such as Netgear, Belkin ... have USB ports router capable doing that.
But I know D-link has a model DI-6245S came with USB port is ready for that function. A little expensive though. If you are looking for cheaper one, around $100 or less, you may want to visit port forward.com. Folks there mess around with routers and may already experimented routers came with USB ports.
