What time does a name server takes to propegate on the internet?
Can any one tell me how much time does it take a name server to propegate to the internet? And is there any one that I might contact to make it propegate? I have my own Name server and I would like them to get propegated on the internet. Thanks

Not really sure what you're asking here, but I think it's one of two things.. 1. You have your own web server (and not a name server) with its own domain name that you want to ensure access to. That being the case, the company you registered the domain name with will take care of propogating the name, usually it will take 24 hours to fully propogate. 2. You actually do have a name server. DNS servers cannot be advertised like web servers because any internet customer will use their ISP's DNS servers to resolve names. A setup like that will only benefit you, no-one else will use it.

why am i able to ping a server using IP address but can't ping it using server name?
It's a NT server, able to ping other servers using the server names.

There could be many reasons. 1- Do you have netbios protocol enabled? This is the way Windows machines communicated with each other in the old Windows 9x days. This is set in the network adapter settings, check first if you have tpc/ip protocol then check to add netbios. 2-File and printer sharing in the same network adapter settings should be enabled. This allows the broadcast of the computer presense. After this is enabled it could take between 15-30 minutes to broadcast its presense to the browse master server. 3- LMHOST file. This is an old technique in which you maintain a file in each system with the IP and translation name of each computer in the network the computer must communicate with. The problem here is if your computers get dynamic ips the LMHOST file will quickly go obsolete. That is why we use DNS Servers now a days. 4- DNS Server translation from IP to host name is distributed by the DHCP Server under the options section. I run a Windows 2003, but I guess this should be fairly similar in NT, so if you need help let me know. In newer systems you use "ipconfig /flushdns" to drop and clean all the cache in dns don't remember if this was available in NT, certainly it is available in W2K. Anyway, check 1-3 first.

it is called the service name..or SID run -> services.msc check out Oracle database service name there...provide that name while making a connection.. or logon to sqlplus as sysdba select name from v$database;

it depends on your email client. if you are using outlook or outlook express you would click on tools, account, and either "view or edit" or choose the account an then view/edit depending on the version. Other mail clients have different procedures. which client do you use?
