Music Server

What are the pros and cons of setting up a music server within your home?
If one is to setup a central server and stream music throughout the home, what are some pros and cons?

Only con is that it is expensive. The pros are it is very convenient. If I were you, i wouldn't do it unless I had a WHOLE lot of music to stream and had the money to do so.

How can I set up a Music Server for my LAN with Linux?
I want to listen to the same music at the same time with 2 computers in my LAN. One is running Linux, the other one Windows XP. So I thought it would be the best to set up server on the linux pc and setup a stream to the other pc. But I don't know how to do that. What application do you recommend me? Should be easy (fast) to configure. Is this possible without a delay, anyway?

Samba is an excellent server suite and it works on Linux and Windows - at the same time. We use it at work, and I have built in to Ubuntu distro, but I have not configured or done any troubleshooting - mostly because it runs well. It's a freebee so check out the Samba site

2007 Outlander Engine Tick Sound after first 5 secs of acceleration, also Music Server Restart problem?
Does anyone who own one hear that tick after you shift to drive and drive for the first 5 seconds? I hear a tick and worry about what that is. Also, does your 30GB Music Server restart often? Especially during CD burning? Perhaps the PC is running off AMD instead of P4s ... ideas anyone? I have the XLS trim.

You better check that out at the dealership, the chances are, they will try to get the manufacturer to pay for any repair necessary. You should use your warranty if you bought it new.

Need help with choosing a music server for my new home?
Basically I was going to get home automation but now I can't afford it with the house expenses. I have a 5 bedroom property and wanted music in every room and wanted the whole house to play music If i wanted to all at one time. I am going to have Kef speakers mounted in each room, but can anyone help me identify a product which can do this for me, i'm hoping that all this can be controlled from a computer.

Need way more information as streaming music into a room is simple and cheap, however, if you're wanting each individual room to be able to have its own music/video/pictures etc....... 1) You say you have speakers in each room....does that mean you also have media extentions in each room? Like in one room, you can have a PS3, the other an xbox 360 or simple media extenders w/ televisions in each room that connect to these speakers? 2) Are you looking to stream audio, pictures, and video? 3) How robust are you looking to make this "media library" of yours i.e. how many Gigs/TBs you looking to fill up? 4) What is your budget i.e. are planning on this to replace your children (mine did, but they don't exist yet)? Here are some options: - Simple Nas - $200 - $600 depending on availability of hard drives. - Buffalo/Mybook 2TB (RAID) - $800 (4TB - $1600) - HP Home media server (No Raid i.e. no backup) - $800 - My specs are like this on my custom built i.e. 4GB of RAM, 8TB (RAID), Windows Vista Ultimate, 4 Xeon CPUs. $3,500 It streams to all the 360s upstairs downstairs, wireless and wired, using the walls i.e. using the electric grid (200m/bits vs. 54m/bits for wireless.) The adapters for the grid aren't cheap, i.e. $200 for a set.

How to add NPR internet radio stream to music server?
I have an olive (aka hifidelio) music server with internet radio capabilities. I would like to add NPR (wnyc.org) to my stations but can not find a working (mp3??) stream. Thanks

Most NPR affiliate stations that stream do so with a special agreement set up between NPR and RealAudio. It may be hard to find one that has MP3 instead.

Is there anyway you can create a music media server on your computer so you can pick up your music?
from your PS3? how do you do this if you can?

i was able 2 broadcast music to my ps3 but it take a while 4 the ps3 to play it and it very hard to make it work and the thing i have 2 broadcast it wit cost me $160 and u also need a media server

Can streaming music cause the server to slow down?
I am being told that my listening to music on the internet is causing the servers here at work to slow down, is that true?

Yes. Also, it takes up a lot of bandwidth, causing other computers on the network (including server) to have a slow connection.

Does anybody knows a windows music server that support multiple users?
I've been looking for more than a month without any luck. It seems that any good music server are only linux or unix based. Does anybody knows one that works on windows. Slimserver has been the best one yet, but since i can't stream to different users differents song, it seems useless. Please please please help me It would be nice if the software can handle itunes playlists like Slimserver does. Since all my music is organized in itunes...

Try Icecast with Mplayer....The combo rocks...you can set up a streaming server in a jiffy. Check out http://www.icecast.org and http://www.mplayerhq.hu

What I want to do is create a flash application that runs on a PC. This flash application gives users the ability play movie or music files that are on a server connected via ethernet or wifi. Is this possible and is it easier to create flash? I have average C++ programming skill.
