Managed Shared Hosting

Looking for recommendation on web based project management & collaboration for small business?
My company (35 employees in home office, with 10 employees scattered in 5 remote locations) is looking for a product/service that we can used in a web based environment to track important projects and collaborate on those projects. We could host the product on our own system or use a hosted package, either option is fine. We do NOT want something over complicated, but we do want to be able to do file sharing, have threaded conversations, track to-dos & responsibilities, set & report on milestones, track whether or not key due dates are being met. Managing the system should be relatively easy. I am the only IT person on staff and already have a full plate. Thank you in advance for your feedback.

There are several good ones, and most will give you a few weeks for a free demo. We use www.teamworkzone. But, other good ones include ... www.weboffice.com www.eproject.com Our web based CRM system (www.salesboom.com) has limited project management capability.

Unmanaged dedicated server questions?
Hello, I am considering starting a website that will require a dedicated server the thing is that I would much much rather an unmanaged server to a managed one simply because a managed server is soo much more expensive. The problem I have is that I have never before administered a server of my own with such depth and control over it and the extent of my knowledge is an account with a shared host. The site will only be using a small php script and I couldn't imagine any intensive changes to the server ever being needed. My question is would you recomend me getting an unmanaged server? Are they difficult to administer? Can you learn how to administer one just by having one?(exerience) Are they as daunting as they sound? Are there any guides out there for how to manage a fedora core 6 server with WHM and Cpanel? (Links Please) How could someone administer a server without having a control panel(cpanel/whm)? Sorry I was not trying to compare dedicated to shared but to give an example of the depth of my knowledge, although I have run a webserver before on my own computer it isn't quite the same because i am using windows xp. The reason it needs to be dedicated is because the site will be cpu/ ram intensive. I dont want to go into detail about the site although I'm sure people can draw their own conclusion not that it is necessary. Also where do people learn this stuff without going to an education establishment and taking a course in it?

Hi, I can help you answer your questions. I think you will be better off with an unmanaged server because it will be cheaper in general. When I purchased an unmanaged dedicated server, I didn't know anything about managing a server, but I found it very easy with WHM. You can't learn everything by reading it. You just have to get one and try bunch of things. The one I'm using has a big online community where you can ask questions. Most of the common questions are already answered with great detail, so you just need to search and find. That's how I learned to manage my server. (hosting more than 100 websites) I really didn't understand what would be the difference if I get a managed hosting account. I didn't have any problem with unmanaged one "yet". I guess if you want to administer a server without having a contrl panel, you should learn Unix/Linux. I found it useful to learn some simple commands. Definitly helps. Anyway, good luck with your search. I will include a link to the one I got my server. They have great reputation + specials. I don't know what they have now, but there are manuals there where you can learn managing the server.

How to start an open source software project?
I have a software idea. In talking with some people, I feel that there will be a lot of interest in this software. I want to use the open source community to create this software. I know that I can host the project on www.sourceforge.net, but how do I get developers to work on it? How do I manage the process, releases, QA etc? I only have an idea and no hands on software development experience. How will this process work? If you can share your experience, it will be great.

you need to know the c++ language

to all web developers this question is for you!!?
I share a web host with a friend and i think they are using my codes for their website too. i would like to ask if how do you encrypt your codes but still the website (my website) will still work? so that even they download my files they cannot open it or even they manage to open it, it will just display gibberish? how do you do that? i hope you got my idea

I don't think you can stop them, especially if they are the primary account holders or if they own the server. Hosts are cheap now, so you should get your own domain and host. I use 1and1.com to host mine and register my domains. I pay $5/month for 2 domains, 50 GB storage, 250 GB transfer per month, up to 1000 email addresses, and password protected directories. You can also use CGI on their servers if you have that package. If you're interested, use my referral link when you order: http://www.1and1.com/?k_id=11001016 If you're just talking about HTML code and not CGI programs, you can make it harder for them to steal your stuff by using Javascript to encode the web page characters in URL-escaped format (with the % signs all over). There's also that method of using the HTML escapes as in one of the answers above. But that's kind of obvious to anyone who knows what they're doing. You might have to really make that Javascript code ugly for it to confuse them, and even then it might not work. If it is HTML they're stealing, there's no way to stop them even if it's on another host. You can confuse them a bit, but you cannot stop them if they know what they're doing. If your friend does not know what he's doing, you'll be OK with that solution. Stealing CGI programs requires access to the server though, so using a different host would help with that. Good luck! Edit: Now that I think of it, if your friend is smart enough to decode all that stuff he will probably want to write his own HTML. So using the various "encryption" methods out there will be good enough to protect your HTML from your friend. Good luck!

Trouble getting an FTP connection using Dreamweaver..?
I'm just starting to build a website. I have Filezilla and using that I connect to hostname "mysite.com" and it works fine. I can upload and download files and such. But when I try to manage my site using Dreamweaver it doesn't work. I went to manage site and under sharing files I told it that I connect to the remote server using FTP. I tell it that the hostname is "mysite.com" but when I press the "Test Connection" button, it says "An FTP error occurred - cannot make connection to host." Shouldn't all the setting be the same for Filezilla and Dreamweaver?? Why does Filezilla connect fine, but not Dreamweaver? I tried it with and without the 'passive FTP' but still no luck. Ok, straight IP address didn't help either. BUT I have discovered another huge clue - the FTP connection will work on my desktop, but not on my laptop. Is the laptop trying to connect using the wireless instead of the ethernet connection to the internet?

Go into the Connection wizard where you typed in your server and password. At the top click on the tab where it says Advanced. Look through all the screens and make sure "Passive FTP" has a check mark in it. I am pretty sure it has to be turned on and by default it is turned off. Of course, if it is already checked, try turning it off to see if that works. Good luck.

Cross-Over Problem?
I was recently trying to set up two PC's for coop gaming using a crossover. We managed to establish a connection and share files but when we tried to play the game, neither one of use could see the game. We did try changing who was host but still nothing. The game was Operation Flashpoint Resistence ver 1.96. Does anyone have any ideas?

check ur system's firewall configuration. or internet security service

K.O. Kyouya Ootori (from Ouran High School Host) where does he get the money from?
Just finished watching the awesome anime, had just one question: Kyouya's father told Tamaki's father that K.O., ie. his son, bought the company's shares from Tennerro and gave them back to him. How did Kyouya manage to earn so much money though? The host club? His own business that he does in his free time? Any ideas?

he earns many by selling merchandise that either belongs to the hosts or magazines.. if you have seen on an episode kyouya showed them many issues of the magazine. i think everytime the club welcomes girls, the girls have to pay.. how do you think they pay for all those decorations they have?

How do I get 2 laptops to work wireless with Belkin N1 Router?
Both laptops run on vista, I have managed to get mine to connect to internet but my sisters wouldn't even though I was the host and allowed other networks to use the security enabled network. Now my sister has managed to get on the internet, while I was still online and it didnt disrupt anything until i installed vista service pack 1. Since then I have not been able to connect to the internet, and the router is showing up as an unidentified network in the network and sharing centre. can anyone help me out please? :) ive tried restarting router a fair few times now....and ive tried conecting with ethernet....no luck :(

It sounds like the network name (SSID) has been configured on your router to be hidden. Log into your router, unhide the network name and try again. If this works, you can then go back and re-hide the network name on the router, but your laptop will still connect.

What Do you think about Dr Phil Now ??
TV show epitomises anti-Arab feelings By Linda S. Heard Online Journal Contributing Writer Jun 6, 2008, 00:10 Email this article Printer friendly page Recently broadcast on MBC4 were three episodes of the Dr Phil show that initially aired in the US last November. They featured Katherine Lester, a pretty 18-year-old American woman who travelled to the West Bank to be with Abdullah, a 22-year-old Palestinian man she "met" on the Internet when she was 16. This was the second time that Katherine had flown to the Middle East to see the young man; on the first occasion, in response to her family's objections, she got as far as Amman, Jordan, before being picked up by the FBI as a minor and escorted home. The first episode showed videos of the star-crossed youngsters in Jericho holding hands and staring lovingly into one another's eyes declaring they wanted to marry much to the horror of Katherine's mother and sister, who shared the stage with Dr Phil. The mother said she feared the boy had brainwashed her daughter or was keeping her from going home against her will. Dr Phil made a meal of the fact Katherine's life could be in danger in the Middle East and said he would do everything in his power to get her away from him and back with her mother. And he did. When Katherine joined the show alone via satellite he treated her like someone who had been kidnapped even though she protested her happiness and told him she intended returning to the US very soon. Later, when Abdullah joined her, Dr Phil berated him for disrespecting her parents, criticised his parents for sending Katherine an air ticket, and repeatedly asked him why he hadn't been to the US embassy to request a visa for the United States. He then badgered the girl to return to the safe arms of Uncle Sam on the coming Friday and insisted he would send an escort so that she could fly from Tel Aviv airport. It was evident Katherine didn't want to leave and, in fact, the Dr Phil show bought several tickets home and sent several escorts before she finally agreed, only to arrive home to discover her mother and sister hadn't bothered to turn up at the airport to greet her. The last episode was the most offensive. This time Abdullah was on his own in the West Bank studio, while Katherine was on the stage. Again, on Dr Phil's repeated say-so she told a shocked Abdullah that their relationship was over and depicted him as a possessive stalker, causing him to remove his earpiece and walk off only to return a little later to ask why. On Dr Phil's prodding, Katherine admitted with a wry smile that she had met someone else. "An American," said the ecstatic Dr Phil enjoying this hallelujah moment to the full. After all, he had saved this cute American princess from the evil machinations of a Palestinian, who wanted her for goodness only knows what nefarious purpose, and the audience loved every second. One of their own had been brought home. No understanding There was no understanding of exceeding difficulties Palestinians encounter to get a US visa that would first entail Abdullah getting a permit to travel to occupied Jerusalem where the nearest American consulate is sited. And there was no explanation that the only threat to the girl's life while she stayed in the West Bank was from Israeli attacks. It was clear that Dr Phil was clueless. We were told that the couple were in Jericho on the West Bank, yet on several occasions he mentioned Katherine's flight from Gaza. It's certainly true that nobody really wants their 18-year-old daughter to take off into the unknown on an emotional roller-coaster, and I can understand her mother's concerns, but, what I found objectionable about the show was the way Dr Phil stressed that Abdullah was an Arab, presenting Palestinians and this region in a negative light. He even went so far as inviting Betty Mahmoody. author of the book Not Without My Daughter, onto the show so that she could warn Katherine of the dangers of hooking up with a Middle Easterner. She is still in hiding from her husband after 25 years, Dr Phil told his audience in an obvious attempt to paint all Muslim men with the same brush. That could have been you, he scolded Katherine. No wonder Abdullah thought the pop psychologist made him look like "a bad guy" even "a terrorist." Last Sunday, Abdullah had the opportunity to give his side of the story on the MBC1 chat show Kalam Nawaem, a sort of Arabic version of The View. The female hosts rounded on him for not properly defending himself or his culture on Dr Phil, and then he dropped the bombshell. According to him, the pair had married but Katherine hadn't wanted to admit this on TV. So the "possessive stalker" Katherine had referred to had actually been her husband. Congratulations, Dr Phil, for managing to wrest asunder a happy couple! The question is would he have done the same if the young man had been called Alan or Aaron instead of Abdullah, and even if he had, would his audiences have applauded as enthusiastically? Go on! Have a guess! All right! Here's a clue. Dunkin' Donuts has been forced to drop featuring another TV host in the Harpo (Oprah reversed) stable: Rachael Ray because she wore a black-and-white fringed scarf resembling a Palestinian keffiyeh. Oh, no! What would Dr Phil say?

I saw the Dr.Phil show with Katherine and my interpretation was very different from yours. Abdullah was proven to be a liar and he snuck the girl away from her family, friends and country with no regard for anyone but himself. He bragged about the mansion he owned in Malabu, I believe, which was another lie. He lied about going to the Embassy to get a visa for the U.S. until he got caught in one of his many lies. He disrespected her family and Katherine admitted that he had treated her very badly on more than one occasion. That's certainly not the way a man should treat the woman he supposedly loves and not the way to treat her loving family. If that were my daughter being taken to a foreign country by a man that she met on the internet and that I had never met I would be extremely conerned not matter what country he took her to. They were living in a war zone and Dr.Phil was very concerned about Katherine's safety as was her family. I didn't find Dr.Phil to be anti-Arab as you put it. I still watch his show faithfully and if most people had as much common sense as he does the world would be a much better place.

In a country where cigarettes are responsible for one in five deaths and smoking costs tens of billions of dollars in health care, Obama has been under pressure to set an example by giving up his reported two-decade-old habit. Appearing on NBC's "Meet the Press" program, interviewer Tom Brokaw told Obama he had ducked answering the question during an interview last month with ABC's Barbara Walters. Noting that the White House was a no-smoking zone, Brokaw asked Obama, "Have you stopped smoking?" "I have," Obama replied, smiling broadly. "What I said was that there are times where I have fallen off the wagon." he said in public he had stoped but gee it seems he told a lie again,he s good at that.

Probably not.
