Managed Application Hosting

Is there a safe way to extend the start menu on Windows XP programmatically?
I've managed to write a simple program that simply adds a textbox and a button to the start menu. I've done this using a combination of C# with Windows.Forms controls, and Win32 API like SetParent and FindWindow. The controls work absolutely fine, however, I am unsure as to whether this method of using Managed code to extend the Windows shell directly, and having the start menu host .NET controls could be troublesome for whatever reason. This was a quick program I wrote to find out if it was possible, but if I were to develop such an application, I would like to know if it would be safer to create controls using Win32 API? If I can get this to work, I may be able to create some kind of 'Start Search' for Windows XP...

Interesting question... I would say, yes, it would be safe. Managed code to unmanaged Win32 API calls are generally safe in most applications, so I don't see why it would be different for the Start Menu. I recommend, however, that you post your question on the MSDN forums or MS newsgroups for more in-depth answers: http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/default.aspx?siteid=1 http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/list/en-us/default.aspx

Is there a good hosted RoR help desk application?
I'm looking for a hosted help desk system that we can use to manage customer support issues. I've used LivePerson in the past and while it's good for managing incoming messages from users it's overkill for what we need. We're using Lighthouse now for bug tracking (love it! so much better than Fogbugz...) and while it's great for devs it's not really good for cs issues. Any suggestions here? Doesn't necessarily need to be RoR but given that a lot of people devving in RoR are adopting the 37 Sigs mentality of hosted services with simple functionality I'm guessing that might be our best bet. Any suggestions?

http://www.simpleticket.net/ is an open source web app. But you have to host it yourself. http://quicktkt.com/ could be nice.

Does google aps have mailing list functionality?
We have a listserv set up with our hosting service, but it's hard to manage and we've been having problems with messages not getting sent. I really like google groups but would like the sent messages to be from my own domain name. I notice google applications let you use gmail as you webmail client but I couldn't find anything about list serves. We're willing to pay a little - so it doesn't have to be free!

I have that service and don't see it available.

Please help check spellings error on my resume. 10 points for the best help. Thank you?

Hi there, first off let me say congrats on all your achievements and hard work!! I’ve added some websites for helping you format your resume properly. Any & all edits etc I’ve made are only suggestions – this is your resume so feel free to do what you’d like with them. You’ve got a lot of great experiences & achievements!!! I edited in word which let me put my edits in bold etc but I couldn't do that here - if you would like me to email you the word doc just let me know. Your education & training etc should be listed prior to your work experience. You also need a heading and objective – the websites can help you with this – choose headings like Professional Experience as opposed to Work Experience etc. Plus make sure to include a cover letter. Looks good, just download an outline for a resume on microsoft word and fill it in, the only drawback would be being overqualified for the job you are going for, if thats the case trim some of the extras like your awards and international accomplishments and things like that.

The Microsoft Word does not pick up everything. Come on!

I see no Education. This should be a separate category. It seems you mixed education and work experience together. Theses should be separate. If I'm confused, a potential employer will be too, and that's not good.

Creating a profile app?
Ok, so how can I create a profile application to be used on facebook, myspace, etc. and people can sign in and edit their profile page? It's like, you can add an image, some about me text, quotes, music, etc. and then save it. I want a website, created in Flash 8 and html, where people can log in and edit their profile page. It's not to be like a whole new face book, but a nice, sleek, easy to navigate profile page. Then, I would like to be able to have badges, with the member's photo, and text like "Come see my profile page on...". The website would be hosted on a domain such as www.profile-me.com/user/myProfilePage.html How would I go about doing this? I have these skills: * I know html * I have had lots of experience with creating/managing/editing websites * I have macromedia flash pro 8, and know actionscript 2 well * I can purchase domain and hosting * I can design webpages I know how I would design the site, but not sure how to make all of the functionalities work. Anyone have ANY help? I would really appreciate it, thanks so much for all your help and the best answer gets 10 points and thumbs up!

Open Source defect/bug tracking?
I am on secondment to my company IT team, responsible for defect triage and admin of a web based bug tracking dB, Bug Host Pro (www.bughost.com), while this is effective & easy to manage for the most of the time, it is costly (approx GBP400/month). I am keen in the use of Open Source where possible, my employers are not. I am sure that there are plenty of open source defect tracking applications out there, can anyone recommend something that has similiar functionality to BH. We are need to allow external parties access to the system and would prefer a web based application with minimal installation work. Any tips would be helpfull, I would like to use my own webspace to create an example and then write my proposal, I can write the business paper, but need assistance installing the application on a web page. Thanks in advance of any advice offered.

There are several good Open Source bug trackers. 1. Bugzilla is by far the most famous, though it is notoriously difficult to set up. Many different companies and Open Source projects use this as their bug tracker. http://www.bugzilla.org/ 2. Mantis: This one is much easier to set up than Bugzilla, and has some pretty limited requirements. I'm not very fond of the UI, but it's a capable program. http://www.mantisbt.org/ 3. My favorite open source bug tracker is Flyspray. It is simple to install and has a good number of features without being too complicated. I would recommend this one, though you should also take a look at Mantis to see which UI works better for you. http://flyspray.org/ 4. One of the lesser known open source tracker is Eventum. This was made by the developers of MySQL, and has time tracking features unavailable in Flyspray and Mantis. I found it to have far more features than I needed, but depending on what your requirements are, it may be the best fit. http://eventum.mysql.org/ Alternatively you could find a CMS with a bug tracking addon, such as Drupal (and the project module), or TikiWiki (and their Tracker addon).
