How do I hook up a Linux computer to the internet using an XP host?
I am running Fedora Core 5 on my laptop and I have Windows XP Media Center on my desktop which is connected to the internet via LAN. I want to know how I can connect to the internet from my laptop using my desktop's net connection. I already have all the physical connections set up (network adapters and cable) and I'm already using my network for file sharing. Please don't offer any suggestions on using Linux as host (I already know how much safer it is). I want help on dealing with situation as it. Incidentally, I'm also facing trouble using ICS from my XP partition on the laptop. It used to work flawlessly before, but I think after I installed Fedora it stopped working (although file and printer sharing areOK). I ran the ICS wizard again on each comp, but it didn't work. Any suggestions on what might cause that?

First of all ICS or a proxy service are the way to go. XP is a bit limited with other choices. If you already had ICS set up for the XP partition the same settings will work for the fedora one. For the other part. No. Linux has nothing to do with it. The ICS configuration ist just settings within the XP partition. Linux can't change that. You have recently installed a firewall or made some firewall rule changes on either of the crates?

shared folder with Mandrake Linux in VMware?
I have the following problem. I want to create a shared folder in VMware so the host (windows) and VMware (linux mandrake) have a shared folder. I created a shared folder in VMware but i don't know where to check. Can somebody give me the exact way to do it? to share it and access it

from your Windows PC, try to open the shared folder by \\\. You'll be prompted to logon, so make sure you have a user and password in Mandrake that has access to the shared folder.

Network programming in Linux kernel mode?
Hello, I want to write a simple distributed shared memory in linux kernel mode. My question is how I can create a socket between two host in linux kernel mode. Thanks...

I don't think you will find many more advanced in Linux knowledge than me on Yahoo answers, and I can't answer you question. I do know what your saying, I just don't know how it can be done. Try a Linux networking programming or Kernel forum or this book from O'Reilly: "Understanding Linux Network Internals" Though I think kernel mode sockets have to be ports 1 - 1024.

Windows and Linux, which is more stable for hosting & why?
Thanks for sharing!

Well... if u would ask me... I only use Windows for games and multi media stuff other than that ... I'll go for Linux, for Enterprise Class I used CEntOS 4.4, for Desktop I use different distros, such as Fedora 7, Mandriva 2007 and Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn), all of these Linux distros has its strengths and weaknesses. But one thing they are in common ... all are stable enaf when it comes to application usage. Why?Its bcoz it's open source a lot of eyes are looking at the codes. So if bugs are seen, in a blink of an eyes a resolution can be made. In Windows u have to wait for their next patches in order to update and fix a bug.

What was the violation?
What was the violation? No reason given. Details of Violation: If you are using Apache to host your site just go to the logs section. If it's shared hosting log into your site with ftp then cd ../logs and download the files there. If you are on a dedicated host it depends on where your apache conf file tells apache to put the logs. This is different on Linux, windoze, BSD, etc. Even under Linux it's different depending on what distro. If you have control panel or plesk you can just log in and view your logs. I have a shell script I used to use that downloaded my logs dailly and put them into a DB sorted by which server and what kidn of page hit it was. There are also free log analyzers if you are using Apache as your web server and Linux as your home OS. If you are running a dedicated Linux host you can install these and view the results from windoze machines as web pages. Reading others post. Alexa is not going to be remotely accura This is the part that was cut off. No reason given in the reason field. They are only accurate to represent a small fraction of web users who adopt the toolbar and find it compatable with thier web browsing. I was rather disapointed. The thing about Yahoo! Answers is that it was designed mostly by morons, and anything is a violation if you try hard enough. It's sad, because even if you contact Yahoo! Answers to let them know the were mistaken and you didn't do anything wrong, they'll just reply (IF they reply), "We will look into the issue and if we consider you did act in violation of the community guidelines we will suspend your account" Few people think about it, but workers at Yahoo! are humans like the rest of us. They work at Yahoo! because that's what they've got and they need the money, but they don't care if we get are unjustly accused of violating the guidelines or anything. Someone could report you for no reason whatsoever and Yahoo! wouldn't do a thing about it.

Can anyone help me with PHP settings?
Hey guys, Ok, I what I need help doing is turning Register Globals Off and Output Buffering On. Here is my host info: Shared Linux Apache 1.3.34 Ben-SSL 1.55 MySQL 4.0 PHP Version 4.4.9 PHP API Mode is CGI Any type of help would be awesome! Stuff with a guide or examples would be the best! - Jason

Looks like no one who knows the answer has seen this... have you tried asking at an Apache forum? http://www.apacheforum.com seems to be down at the moment but type "apache" and "forum" into a search and you'll find quite a few others. All the best!

Running Samba on Debian Linux?
I am attempting to set up an old Pentium III machine as a file server for my Windows home network. I do not want to pay Microsoft for a Windows Server license for a 9 year old machine, so I decided to try a Debian server. I set up Samba, and edited the smb.conf file to include the correct workgroup info. There is no domain controller. The workgroup computers (2 Vista, 1 XP) can see the Samba server, but when I attempt to look at the shares hosted on the server, it prompts me for a username/password. I've tried every username on the server and none will go through. What should I do to get this resolved? Links to any relevant tutorials would be much appreciated; I can't find any that walk me through how to set up the server without being connected to a domain controller.

on your linux box you need to add samba users : example: from the terminal command line smbpasswd -a john will ask for a password - enter the password you want to use will ask yoou to renter a password - renter the password You should be able to log in then in your smb.conf you need to give the users you created access

Questions about a "bonding" Linux network?
I am a student living in the equivilant of student dorms. Unfortunetly an internet connection was not included. A couple years ago the students setup a massive LAN. A number of us then share internet over the LAN using a methoed called "bonding". Apparently the host computers are Linux based using something called a Daemon and all worked fine until they decided to add a second DSL line to the mix. I play a number of Games like CS:S, BF2 and use a number of chat clients like Gaim and Xfire. None of them connect after the second line was added. The only programs that can connect are skype ( which suffers ofen disconnects), mozilla, and IE all of which I had to setup proxy setting manualy. Before I just had to type it into the manual configeration settings then I could switch it to automatic. Does anyone have an idea what is wrong with this connection? Information on "Bonding" networks? I tryed asking the admin, but he doesnt seem to have a clue.

Bonding is also known as "Link aggregation" A daemon is a process running as a server. It's about the equivalent of a Windows "service" Hmm... based on limited information, I can only guess that your network infrastructure is something like: Network A, B, C, D are different parts of the "network" which may be routers or switches or whatever. Basically, the situation was that many people would have ended up getting multiple DSL lines. Someone smart decided to make a dedicated server to act as a gateway then bond several ethernet cards together to make the cards the same IP such that A, B, C, D basically saw the same server with the same IP. You only had one outbound connection -- this was no problem, since the routing for this was simple. Now it could be that the second outbound connection was attempted to bond with the first one... which may or may not have worked successfully. Either way, if the routes and the firewall rules are not set up correctly, you may not be routing out correctly for the secondary DSL line. Additionally, the admin should double check the firewall rules and see if ports for the games you want to play are being blocked in some fashion... The other option that they should try is using a WRT54L using DD-WRT, attempt the outbound links to aggregate on the WRT54L and reconnect the server to one outbound link as before... (just to test certain conditions) Likely that the second outbound connection is not routed properly. May not be acting as fallover... it really depends on what the secondary connection was intended for.
