Check out http://www.tektonic.net/ They give a Virtual Private Server running Linux (so you can install anything you want including java, apache-tomcat, mine came with MySQL preinstalled). If you are familiar with Linux installing applications is as simple as running apt-get "name of the package you want" if you use a Debian based Distribution. As far as distributions are concerned, they offer CentOS 4, CentOS 5, Debian 3.1, Debian 4, Fedora Core 5, Fedora Core 6, Suse 10.1, and Ubuntu 6.06 As far as prices goes, they start at $15.00 per month for a VPS with 256 MB of RAM(which may not be enough for running Tomcat/MySQL). Also, while I am not using the VPS for hosting a Tomcat application, like I mentioned above you can install virtually any software that you want. Finally, if you decide you like them, check out their Terms of Service before you contract with them as they don't allow just any application to be hosted on their servers. I know they don't allow spam servers and I think they don't allow IRC servers among others. The only other thing I note is that if you require your server to be running nearly 100% of the time, their solution might not be for you. I say this because it seems to me that the server running my VPS is on average rebooted about once a month.

They should also offer MySQL. I'm looking for a shared host and must be able to pay in GBP £.

I haven't been able to find JSP support through Yahoo SmallBusiness or Yahoo Geocities. I'd recommend trying a host finding service like findmyhosting or try the free site myjavaserver (which I've never used).

The page is just as searchable as a static HTML page. There are some exceptions to this however, if the JSP page requires input from a user to produce the page, a search engine will not be able to emulate the user input. If the JSP pages are only generated from links elsewhere in your site you should be just fine.
