my macbook pro asks me what incoming mail server to use when I try to set up to received hotmail emails. help!
I need the Incoming Mail Server for hotmail. Does anyone know what it is?

i currently have hotmail and i think it works great. however, i just got a mac computer and it would be nice if i can syncronize my life basically. but this won't work if i continue to use hotmail because the mail application in leopard dosn't support hotmail. do you think it's worth switching to AOL? or do you prefer any other email server such as Yahoo or Gmail? anything would be helpful. Hotmail is a webmail account, not a pop3 account - there's no "server", so you can't use a mail client to get your mail.

If you are using unix/linux as the mail server use SpamAssassin. I have configured this a number of times for large sites and it works pretty well. It will not catch 100%, but it will help. There are a bunch of addons that you can configure with it.
From there, Grey Listing got rid of another 90% off the mail that SpamAssassin missed. It is very simple to setup.
You should also install ClamAv for anti virus protection.
Both can be installed with yum or you can simply download the rpm(s) and install them.
What to do if my mails from mail server to hotmail server are bouncing back as undelivered mail ?
bounce back is caused when the recipient have some problem with receiving mails. if u send mails to anyone and his/her mail box is full then there will be a bounce back to Ur mailbox. if u r getting the bounce back then the person u r sending mails is having some inbox problem like space.... just say him/her to delete extra mails and free sum space for receiving incoming mails.
also if the address u r sending mails does not exist, will cause a bounce back to your mailbox..

I'm trying to set up Outlook Express with my Hotmail account, but it keeps coming up with the following error:
Unable to poll for new messages on your HTTP server. Account: 'Hotmail', Server: 'http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp', Protocol: HTTPMail, Server Response: 'Invalid login.', Port: 0, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC32
I have tried:
Internet Options --> Tools --> Privacy --> www.hotmail.com --> allow
IE --> Properites --> Connections
- "Use a proxy server" is unchecked
- "Automatically detect settings" and "Use automatic configuration script" are both unchecked
I've removed Hotmail and re-added it in the Accounts -->Mail on Outlook Express
I am using Outlook Express 6.
I'm quite frustrated now and don't know what else to try.

If you are using the free Hotmail account you will not be able to. Hotmail stopped allowing the free version to configure in third party email clients in 2004. They said it was because of abuse by spammers. This is true for Yahoo also.
There is a work around. You can use the following extention to allow your email client to access your Hotmail and Yahoo email accounts. I have both and use OE6 with XP Pro to access them.
