Hosting Space
Is there such a thing called space hosting?
I'm looking into hosting my own website in the UK, however I don't want dedicated or shared hosting, I'm looking into finding a provider where I can use to host my own physical severs, basically a provider who gives space and bandwidth for my servers to use rather than using its own servers. Does this exist?
Of course. Call your Internet Service provider to give you a FIXED IP address.
Let's work out the math. Let's say tha you buy a Fixed IP address and it costs $100 per month. Don't expect it to be cheap.
Then consider the really nice Server that you buy. Let's say that you go with a medium budget and spend $1000 for the computer. Of course, if you go LINUX, that software will be free, but Windows 2003 Server will cost you around $1,000.
With your own server, that means BACKUPS and other maintenance. If you go Windows, that means that you need added security. Obviously, I recommend LINUX as your operating system...Hey, but I don't have a clue what you want to do.
Now look at a RENTED shared hosting: Extra low priced service, but shared server and shared SSL certificate. This works, but it you are not alone. Obviously, you would MOVE to other services if you exeedd the monthly bandwidth limit regularly. Take a close look at http://www.ipowerweb.com at their LINUX server services. This is under $50 per YEAR, plus Domain Name(s).
If you are planning multiple websites and want individual website SSL certificate, then go with Host Gator. See http://www.hostgator.com
Again, this is under $60 per YEAR, plus $75 for SSL.
The lower maintenance costs of rented hosting is well worth the hassle of being able to say "I do it myself".
Good luck.
Can I rent out some of my web hosting space if I don't have a reseller account?
I'd like to offer my clients web space to go with their web page as a way to raise a little more money for myself and to be able to pay off my yearly bill. Is this legal?
Legal, maybe. The bigger question is will YOUR host allow it? Unless you host the space on servers YOU own, you probably can't do this.
What can I do with unused web space/hosting?
I bought a years worth web hosting from Bluehost and since then have given up on the site I wanted to host. Is there anything productive or worthwhile to do with this hosting? Maybe there is something I can even do to help make my money back?
Depending on the domain name and the traffic you had visiting, you may want to look at sedo.com to park the domain and forget about the host. When visitors go to your domain name they land on sedo.com's page for your domain. If they click on one of the links/adds you earn $. Not much unless it's a domain name with higher traffic volume. There's also a chance or options to sell the domain name on sedo.com.
Another option is to install a blog and post google ads for visitors to click as they participate. It would have to be interesting and attract visitors, but the revenue generated from ad clicks may add up over time to cover some of the host expense.
One last option is to check with your host. They may refund the unused portion of your payment.
why is the web hosting space so large in USA?
Why the web hosting is so large and cheap in USA? As in China, 1G web hosting is 30-100$ in average, and 10$ to sign a domain. But 50$ can buy 1000G here with a free domain,
Why they are so cheap here?
A lot of competition for USA hosting, pushes price down and dollar is 'cheap' now. Resources cheaper in USA?
Can anyone recommend a good Domain name provider that offers decent space & hosting?
I'd like to set up my own website, and I know there are a lot of options out there. Where is the best place to register my 'dotcom' name? I'd like for them to have decent hosting options, something not TOO pricey. I'm good with web design, so I don't need anything with one of those 'easybuilder' options. Somewhere I can upload various HTML pages and other various files.
Uhm... I Guess that's it. Thanks!
I use this for my website, seems pretty good so far: http://www.siteground.com/
I did the two year plan, so it was about $160.00 or $7.00 per month.
how to install php calssified in my hosting space?
Hi experts,
im new to webhosting. i purchased space at techhosting.com
now i need to install a classified script on it.not from the Cpanel.is thre any good teaching /help web for biginers?
Just ftp it to your root directory. Use either the ftp facility in the program you used to write it (if it has one) or use something like Filezilla ( http://filezilla-project.org/download.php ).
Can anyone recommend a site which'll give me a decent amount of hosting space?
I'm going on a longish trip and need to upload very high-res digital photos from internet cafes as I go round, so someone else can download them at home and burn onto CD.
I need at least 1Gb server space, an upload mechanism which'll work from inside any browser (can't rely on ftp or other s/w being installed), a mechanism to download the files which have been posted, and obviously as cheap (but reliable) as possible.
Clarification, following some of the great responses so far:
I need to be able to upload single files >5Mb (which rules out a lot).
And I need a single account (not multiples - otherwise it's far too fiddly).
And I can't rely on any separate, downloadable (local or java) uploader package (since they're likely to be blocked on most PCs I'll have access to).
And I'm willing to fork out some money, within reason!

I have hosting space and am wondering can i create another ftp account for a friend to upload his data?
I dont want to give my friend my ftp username and password but I am wondering can I create a folder and create a username and password for him so he can access only that one folder?
I am using CPanel
Yes you can, I upload from different computers.
You will need to set up his ftp client with the same passwords and login details as yours, but only do this if you trust him/her not to accidentally delete or over write your files.
Alternatively your webspace provider may allow multiple accounts, in which case you need to log in and set the rights and passwords in your site control panel before giving him his username and password
How do I publish a website produced By Miccrosoft Publisher onto a Godaddy Webserver Hosting Space?
GoDaddy uses FTP protocols. You need to go to your hosting account at godaddy and set your username and password.
Here are the instructions from Publisher Help Files
Before following this procedure, contact your Internet Service Provider or system administrator to get the information you need to publish to an FTP (FTP: A communication protocol that makes it possible for a user to transfer files between remote locations on a network. This protocol also allows users to use FTP commands, such as listing files and folders, to work with files on a remote location.) site. You also have to create an FTP site in FTP Locations.
How?
On the File menu, click Publish to the Web.
In the Save in box, click FTP Locations.
Double-click Add/Modify FTP Locations.
Enter the information you received from your Internet Service Provider, and then click OK.
Click Cancel.
On the File menu, click Publish to the Web.
In the Save in box, click FTP Locations.
In the list of FTP sites, double-click the site you want, and then double-click the folder where you want to publish your Web site.
Click Save.
your ftp protocol is ftp.yourwebsite.com (or net or info).
Good luck. Also, you can call go daddy and they will walk you through this
How much space am I using in my hosting account?
How do I find out how much space I am using in my hosting account? I am wanting to switch hosting and need to transfer all my files but want to make sure I get enough space. My issue with my hosting company now is that I don't have enough space and cant get a hold of them. I store WAAAAAAAY more files than a typical website. We're talking thousands of pages. Please advise. Thanks!
Normally, when you purchase a domain name and host it, you will be given an account to access your web control panel. To access the control panel, a link also will be sent to your email together with the login authentication. For my case, the link will look like this:-
http://www.my-domain.com/cpanel
Once you get into the Cpanel, please find a menu to check your web space.
Or else, just email/contact your web hosting provider to check it for you.
