Hosting Linux
What should I know about Linux Hosting?
If I use Linux Hosting, will I be able to use MS Publisher as a design template? If not, what design software do you recommend?
As a long time Linux geek, I have no love for anything made by Microsoft. Publisher is NOT a web design tool. Published is designed for making brochures, flyers, booklets, etc. The fact that you can convert a publisher file to an HTML format doesn't mean it's a web site tool. In fact, the HTML code rendered from Microsoft applications (yes, including FrontPage) is usually crap.
Their generated code contains a lot of proprietary stuff that's not standard in HTML, and it can cause problems between broswers.
here's what a Linux host usually has: Linux servers (Red Hat Linux is popular), Apache Web Server, MySQL for databases, and they usually support scripting languages like PHP and Perl. Some hosts will also provide support for Python and Ruby.
For web design, I always recommend a decent text editor that forces your to learn how to use XHTML and style sheets. once you have full control of how your content is built, you'll find yourself building much better web pages.
If you need a tool, try something called nVu. It's a free HTML editor that works on both Windows and Linux clients.
Learn to code in standard XHTML. Then, all your stuff will work for all clients, no matter what system you host on.
If I change from windows to linux hosting, will my site still work?
I use linux on my laptop and desktop. I am a webmaster for a local business, but their site was on a windows hosting account before I was the webmaster. I would like to use .php and mysql on the site which would give me the ability to do all kinds of cool things with it. The site currently is only html and flash, so asp databases or anything. If I have my host switch the site to linux servers, will the site go unchanged or will it get all messed up?
If all you are using is HTML, you should not experience any differences. In fact, php should work better on Linux as that is its native environment.
Running php on Linux gives you more options not directly available on IIS, (e.g., use of the .htaccess file)
Whatever the case, I would do my own backup of the site prior to switch over because you can never predict what will happen. Having your own backup will allow you to upload your site to the new location if the switchover doesn't work out well
What ftp software do i use to transfer a file to a linux hosting server?
Currently, i'm using windows xp platform. Any guide into above problems as i'm not familiar with the linux/unix. Thanks again.
Try this one
Ipswitch WS_FTP Professional 2007
what is the difference between hosting on windows or linux?
I am starting up a website, and I've noticed that when signing up for hosting, it asks what kind of hosting you want, Windows or Linux, what is the difference. Are there compatability issues? Will I be able to use my mac?
You would be able to use any operating system to view the pages. Whether you want to host on Windows or Linux determines what operating system you want the host to run. There are standards in the form of protocols (FTP, HTTP, SSH) in place that would solve any communication problems. (The way a mac, windows, or linux computer can all access the same website, because it uses HTTP.)
The main factor in your decision should be what programming languages you want to run. If you want to use PHP/MySQL or Oracle based scripts, I would choose Linux or Unix.
If you want to use ASP.NET or any .NET based scripts, I would choose Windows, as Linux does not support these languages.
In my experience, Linux runs faster and more stable than Windows. But I'm not going to say 'it runs faster period' as that usually leads to flame wars.
Hope this helps,
Ken
what is the difference between a unix, windows and linux hosting plan?
obviously i appreciate that the operating systems are different, but will choosing one over the other affect basic things like mysql, FTP, e-mails, DNS, php etc?
All websites today currently run on either a Windows web server or a Linux-based server. The vast majority of websites run on a Linux-based platform as Linux has a strong reputation for security and web server performance. With standard (static) HTML-based websites, the web hosting platform doesn't make much difference. When it does make a difference, however, is when the website uses a dynamic scripting technology such as ASP (A Microsoft based technology), or PHP / PERL (Linux based technologies). A Windows-based hosting solution will run a Microsoft Windows server with IIS (Internet Information Server), and is necessary to run an ASP / ASP.NET scripted website. A Linux-based platform is typically used for PHP, Perl, and most other types of websites. Basically, unless your website uses ASP (pages ending in the .asp extention), Windows hosting is not neccessary.

Web site Hosting, Windows Server vs Linux Which is Better?
We currently have a hosting company that looks after our website, I have found out that they are running Windows based Server. My question is should a website provider/hosting really be running Windows server or do respectable Hosting companies run Linux. I just need information like the cons of having windows environment.
My website is hosted by Microsoft on Windows servers, but having administered many servers (Novell NetWare, OS/2, Unix, Windows NT4 thru Server 2003, Linux), Windows would be my last choice for most server functions.
Management likes Windows servers because they think that the graphical user interface will lower the cost of administrators, but total cost of ownership is greater for Windows servers (greater hardware requirements, less MTTF).
I had heavily used NetWare servers that would run without rebooting for 11 months, yet Windows NT4 nd 2000 servers that were less lightly loaded needed to be rebooted every week or two, or their processes would die or slow due to memory leaks. NetWare and Unix servers, though tricky to set up and tune, would run and run without attention.
Unix servers can execute PHP, which is a powerful server side scripting language. Windows web servers can't run PHP.
What is the difference between Windows web hosting and Linux web hosting?
Which is better for performance and security? I don't know anything about PHP, website design, database, etc. I will be using a template design from MS Publisher. What would you recommend?

Take a look at: http://bluehost-service.atspace.com . I’m sure it would work for you and fulfill all your requirements. They have a really great offer & I have used them for over 3 yrs now, and have never had a single problem with them. Their service is really great and easy to use.
What is the best free web site hosting linux operating system ?.?
I would like it to be secure and stable.
linux comes in many flavors called "distributions" or "distros". since it's free and easy to program (if your a programmer), many people have come up with thier own versions. there are versions made for security, multimedia, etc and include customizations for people that like those things. The distros can be downloaded from sites called "mirrors" that are located in all countries of the world, just find one near you.
This site, rates distros by popularity and provides links for many:

a linux cd is packaged in a file called an ISO. to use the ISO, burn it with BurnCDCC from http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/utilities.html using that program makes sure that the cd is created correctly.
What's the difference between linux and windows 2003 hosting?
I thought I'd try building my own website but don't really have a clue what I am doing. I registered a domain name last night (a .co.uk one) and the same site offers web hosting. As it's just a hobby at the moment I don't want to pay out too much expense so there's two £3.99 per month options. One with linux and one with windows 2003. What's the difference?
It depends on what you want from your web site. The Linux server will be more secure for your site. If you want to connect to a database you will need to learn a bit about MySQL (probably) and writing PHP web pages. The Windows server will be more prone to worms and malicious attack and you will need to learn MS SQL server and writing ASP web pages if you want to connect that to a database.
I prefer the Linux solution but others will tell you differently...
Whats the difference between Windows web hosting and linux web hosting ..& which one is more better ?
most people prefer linux , many content management systems wont run properly on windows
Go to http://www.samwilson3d.com , there is a list of hosts (right side menu) they all have cpanel and something called "fantastico" the least expensive of these plans is around $50 per YEAR
Godaddy has given me problems of every kind including MySQL and FTP problems and they are just a pain in the butt
Now depending on what kind of site you want, I recommend Coppermine Photo Gallery or Joomla or Zen cart which is a 1 click install using Fantastico, you can make this look however you want bu only using Photoshop and CSS. I would start with a premade template designed for Coppermine and then make adjustments from there to make the site the way you want it.(the template can just be a starting point or you can not use one at all)
Joomla can also be installed with one click using Fantastico and that may also be the way to go.
-there are about 20 different 1-click install solutions that you can install and customize with Fantastico
