Expired Domains

recovering expired domains during the "redemption period" - penalty fee?
After a domain name expires, it enters a 30-day "redemption period." Do all domain registrars charge an extra fee for renewing a domain name after it has expired but is still in the redemption period? GoDaddy charges $80!

Yes most domain registrars charge an extra fee for renewing a domain name after it has expired but is still in the redemption period. It is like with many things pay your bill on time or pay a late fee. It is still better to pay the $80 during the redemption period than what the price goes to after the redemption period. Many expired domains are bough up by third parties

What is the process of acquiring expired domain names?
When a domain expires, what happens next? Does it go into a pending deletion phase, and then is up for grabs? I want a domain that expired June 16th of this year. Before contacting the former owner (who could capitalize on the fact that someone wants something he controls) I want to know how long until I could just register the domain directly. Also, are there ways of getting on a waiting list, for when a domain becomes available? Thanks in advance

Here is a particularly good article I found a few months ago when I was researching this topic: http://www.mikeindustries.com/blog/archive/2005/03/how-to-snatch-an-expiring-domain As for getting on a 'waiting list', you can hire companies to try grabbing the domain as soon as it becomes available. To get the best chance, register with all of these companies: pool.com clubdrop.com snapnames.com

What to do with expired domain names with PR and BLs?
I register expired domains with google PR 3+ and indexed BL 1+ but i don't really know what to do with them. Any ideas?

I agree with the comments above. Park your domain with Sedo, it's free and will earn you a small amount of regular money. http://www.sedo.co.uk/main.php3?tracked=&partnerid=&language=e You can sell through them as well. I could be interested in buying one, you can email me. Regards, Zyfert http://webhosting.cybersprout.com

BEst way to redirect from expired domain name?
I was on holiday recently and stupidly allowed my domain name registration to expire. It has since been "bought" by a domain re-seller and they are asking for a minimum of $200 for it. I have a replacement domain and the site is live again, however all the incoming links are pointed to the old domain name - any suggestions?

There is nothing to do since they are the only ones to do anything with it. You can contact them and ask to redirect for a few days and make sure all your visitors know that there's a new site. He may do it.

How to get unique traffic to parked domains?
Is there a good company that will send unique traffic to parked domains. Even software, I know some of the ppc companies say they allow expired link traffic /expired domain traffic. I don't need clicks, just unique visitors. Where I get a little confused is in the T.O.S it says that no pop-ups, pop-unders, banners, redirected traffic or links are allowed but traffic from expired links are allowed. I guess expired links are the same as expired names or links the expired names had. But I believe that if traffic from expired links are allowed it would be coming from a link, pop-up, pop-under or banner. So if anyone knows of a service that can send traffic within the guidelines or will be accepted/overlooked, I'm all ears (or eyes)

I would suggest optimizing your parked page for search engines. If you are trying to get people to buy your domain consider advertising for it. Make all Calls To Actions point to that domain.

I have a question about expired domain names?
Is there somewhere on the web I can find out who the previous owner of a certain domain name was, and what kind of site it was origionally? I own a domain name that I bought recently, and I'm finding it listed on some sites as having expired in January of 2008. Is there a place on the web I can get more info?

Look for it on the wayback machine. You'll be able to see what it looked like. Just put in the URL and pick a date from the list you'll get.
