Domain Server

How do a configure a XP computer to have the option to log into a domain server when the computer starts up?
Right now when I turn on my computer I log into the computer itself. If I want to access shares on the network, I have to log into the server. How do I configure my computer to be able to select the domain when first log in? How do I log into the domain server from the remote XP computer at start up. I want the computer authenticated on the domain server.

Change your workgroup name to the workgroup name on the domain. Say its "JOE" the workgroup name. Right click on 'My Computer' select the 'name tab' and click on 'change' in that screen change the workgroup name to "JOE" restart and your ready to go. You should see all the shared files from that workgroup in ' network places' GOOD LUCK

How can a domain server be used in a LAN?
In a LAN, we may not need routers as we can use switches. However, how can we put a domain server in the LAN then? Switches only use MAC. The domain server is used to take charge of the LAN and it uses IP. Can someone kindly explain in layman's terms? Thanks.

Are you asking about a Windows Server? If you are, you can simply plug into a port on your switch. You can configure the server as a Stand Alone server or as a Domain Controller server. The best choice is always to configure it as a Domain Server. This implies many things. You have to define a Domain Name. You have to know if you are connected to the Internet. If you are you have to know the DNS URL's of your ISP. Are you going to use a firewall? In this case a hardware firewall is the best choice. Will you use virus protection? In this case and Enterprise version is the best choice. What about email? Will you host your own email server or will you use one provide by your ISP? Security is an absolute must! You must always think about it. Will you host a website? Or will you let your ISP do that for you? If you host the website what web server software will you use? This is just a small sample of the questions you need to ask and answer before to add a Domain Server to your LAN. If you need more help just let me know. Perhaps I can help you. Have fun and be safe.

How do I set up a domain server using linux?
I am trying to set up a domain server using linux. I would like to make it so that when anyone users one of the 5 other Windows XP computers in my hosue they have to login and then would have access to all their files, no matter what computer they use. I belive the best way to do this is with a domain server. If there is a better way to do this please let me know. If a domain server is the best way to do this how do you set it up. What linux program are you running (I need a free one)?

I think your terminology needs refined a bit, but I do understand what you are saying. What you are looking to do is set up a *Windows* domain with your Linux box. To do this, you will need to install Samba (http://www.samba.org). Samba can emulate a windows domain server and provides file sharing, and it will also allow you to set up "roaming profiles" for the users in your house. Caveat: If I recall correctly, Windows XP home does not support domain logins, which also means no roaming profiles. I'd suggest looking at the SAMBA Howto at: http://us2.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-HOWTO-Collection/ Also, just so you know, when you say domain server, usually in the UNIX/Linux world this is referring to a DNS (Domain Name) Server, which translates hostnames into IP addresses. Good luck. __J. Random

What is the advantage of joining domain server?
My senior system admin says that I have to make all client to the member of our WINDOWS 2000/3000 server. when they join.. i can't recognise them in the the network neighbour hood with individual work-group name.. they all will come under one group... I feel not-joining domain is better.

Its true all the clients come under one domain name. With domain server the basic advantage is centralized administration of users who work in organization. I am sure Will be excited to join your client computers,if you go thru help on your windows 2000/2003 server, have look at help or Microsoft windows 2000/2003 administration guide before you make decision.

Seeking advice on web aussie domain server and how i get someone to set it up with all I require?
I need a domain name, a server and help to setup...I want a forum based site, with databases, photo section, live chat, all community based. Am totally iliterate in this area. Please can someone help? It is webhosting I am chasing. It is also to be have adult content, which has caused us to be turned down by a couple of webhosts. I need a recommendation of a webhost, preferably aussie as I am one and it would be easier to contact, but this is not essential. What I would like to set up would have multiple databases, several forums for discussions, a photo gallery and a calendar. All accessable for our members from a main page. There would have to be logins and be a main front page with rules and expectations of intended members. I have no idea how to do any of this, I just know what I need to make this successful for our members, Costs are also a great consideration, Hopefully this added information helps you good people that are taking the time to answer my queries, Sincerely, Diz Not porn - but is adult lifestyle/kink content

1.)When you say server do you mean hosting? If you mean hosting then you can get that at many webhosting sites (I suggest www.1and1.com), If you meant a server then I would suggest getting a vps from 1&1 too. With either package you get a free domain. 2.)Live chat thats pretty easy you need to find a IRC server which you can choose from (I suggest you look on http://searchirc.com/) and then download PJIRC and set up the config to your channel on the IRC server. 3.) Invasion forums or phpbb forums with good knowledge of CSS. 4.) Photo section comes with Invasion forums (I think) or you could make your own using CSS, Flash, Or use Coppermine Photo Gallery. Not to be forward but this sounds like a porn site :P I would suggest getting a professional web designer or just learning the basics of webdesign and build up your knownledge of webdesign
