Domain Purchase
Is it legal for a company to buy a domain that I was going to purchase?
I have been looking around the internet for a Domain Name for my company (which mostly does free charity work), I typed the domain I wanted into one of those Domain Search Engines on Friday, and then purchased it through IPowerWeb. It takes about 3 days for Ipower to purchase the domain, and in that time period, someone with the email "domainsales@gmail.com", purchased the domain name and is now trying to sell it to me for a ridiculous price. I was wondering the legality on this, especially since they got it through me searching a domain purchasing site.
Perfectly legal. Your intermediatary should not have taken so long to have secured the site in this fast-paced world. Imagine that you wanted the last hot product from the store shelf, but it took you three days to reach for it; you'd probably miss out. However, the fact that another 'phantom' company mysteriously snatched up the exact same address as you while iPowerWeb was 'securing' the purchase of your site seems incredibly convienient, that's just my take.
How do I purchase a domain name without paying extra to keep my info private?
On Godaddy I am going through checkout but it costs $6.99/year in addition to the yearly domain name purchase, for my personal contact information not to be listed on whois. Is there a way around this, to have my info private without paying for it?
No, unfortunately there is no way around it. It's like with the phone company, you pay them to keep your information private.

I would like to purchase a domain name and start an online business?
Hey everyone,
I would like to purchase a domain name and start an online business. I live in Canada.
Does anyone know what website is best? I only have very basic HTML knowledge, so I would like a site with templates or one that would allow me to pay someone to make it for me.
Also, I would like to accept credit card/PayPal payments. Anyone know where to start?
**** 10 points best answer!!! ****
Hello fellow Canadian,
I think GoDaddy is the best and there is a way you can purchase your site for about half the price! We're not allowed to post links in here, Yahoo thinks it's spam, but I would like to tell you more about where the best place to start is. There's a vast amount of ways to do this and it's much easier if you have somewhat of a guide to go by.

How do I purchase a domain name for a small business website?
I want to start a website for my company, but I'm not sure how to go about purchasing the domain name.
There are couple of ways to buy a domain name.
1. Go to a domain registrar like 1and1 Internet and type in the domain name you are interested in to search to see if it is available for purchase. If the domain has not been registered then you can just following the instructions to register the domain yourself. 1and1 Internet offers the best domain package around for $5.99, which includes free 1GB email/Webmail, 5-page starter Web site and lots of tools/softwares to get you online. See a sample Web site at http://www.superfina.com
2. If the domain that you want is already registered by someone else then you can go to domain aftermarket such as Sedo to see if you can purchase it from its owner. Sedo is a gloabl marketplace for buying and selling domain names and Web sites. You can also park your domain name with Sedo and earn money. Another good domain aftermarket is Afternic.
How do you account for the purchase of a domain name?
The small business I work for just purchased a domain name, good for the next 5 years. Is it an expense? A prepaid recognized over the next 5 years or an asset. If it's an asset, do I just amortize it evenly over 5 years? I think it's an asset but I can't seem to find anything about it. Thanks!
It really depends on what do you mean the domain name is good for 5 years. If the purchase price is higher than typical costs for reserving and hosting the domain, then there is some intangible value to the name. For example, if Coke would to sell their logo then the intangible value will probably be carried on the book of the purchasers the the rest of its business life. In your case, you will have to carry the intangible value until your business no longer exist or you no longer own the domain name or if the name has loose its value.
The purchase price that is allocated to domain name reservation and hosting, is an expense. Treat it as if you'd pre-paid insurance premium for 5 years.
Best wishes.
Is it legal to purchase a domain name with the intent to resell it?
Curious, if is it legal to purchase a .com domain name with the name of a business with the intent to sell it in the case that that business would want to buy it?
Yes, many people do that for a living and make big bucks. The key is picking the right names. I read stories were some are selling for $50,000 and more,
How do I purchase a Domain?

why do we have to purchase a domain name?
if nobody owns the internet, why do we have to purchase domain names and stuff like that.
what would a small time person need to do to sell domain names? Im guessing that the first step to selling domain names, is to buy a domain name in order to set up the website.
You dont! A domain name is simply a name that directs people to where your site is stored. You have to pay a yearly fee to register one, but you dont NEED one! When you create a website, you can simply use the address of the place where your website is stored.
Should I start on freewebs, make my site popular and known and then purchase a domain name?
I'd like to start a new graphics design website, but I don't want to buy a domain name and start the site up completely unknown.
should i begin it on freewebs, make it known and popular with regular visitors and become affiliated with other websites before purchasing a domain name?
and when you transfer from freewebs to a domain-- hosting on something like GoDaddy .com (what im looking into) is still HTML coding right? It's not too much different? So could I just take my codes and stick them into my domain and it would be the same thing?
please tell all i need to know =) thank you
