Which is the best reliable and dependable domain name and hosting companies?
I am looking to start a business and is shopping for a domain name service and hosting as well and it is important that I deal with a reliable provider and not any fly-by-night service. Would any one happen to know any good ones? besides yahoo and godaddy.. even though I am thinking about going with either one of those two I just wanted to see if there are any others out there

Well, it depends on how much you want to spend. 1. For up to $5 I recommend: http://www.hosttell.com/one/ They are one of the leading European web hosting companies, currently hosting over 500 000 websites. They have plans starting from $1.45/month. Every plan includes Photo Gallery, WebEditor (so you can build a website without knowledge of HTML), Google Adwords coupon (so you can advertise your website on google for free) and a lot more. Check them out. 2. For $5-$10 I recommend Dreamhost http://www.dreamhost.com/hosting.html Their standard price is $119.40/year ($9.95/month if you pay yearly) but they currently have a promotion. You can use the promo code PLUS at sign up page and get the $50 discount + 2 Free domain names. This way you get them for $69.40/year ($5.78/month). You can use their huge Disk Space and host unlimited number of subdomains and domains on a single plan. Disk space: 500 GB Bandwidth: 5000 GB 2 Free domain names Price: $5.78/month ($69.40/year) 3. If you're willing to pay $20+/monthly for hosting I recommend: http://www.mediatemple.com http://www.slicehost.com

How do the domain name/hosting companies register websites?
You're probably going to say "from a reseller." Well, if they get it from a reseller, then how do they register websites? There has to be some kind of code or something to assign domains. Thanks, austinyb I mean, how do the COMPANIES register?

In a (somewhat lengthy) nutshell: There are three entities relevant to the domain name, there's the registrant, the registrar, and the registry. The registry operates the database that stores all of the domain names and their server information. This information is pushed out to root zone servers so that the domain names can resolve. For .com and .net, the Registry is VeriSign, Inc. You can see who the registries for all the different types of domain names are at http://www.iana.org. The organization that decides who gets to operate the registries is the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). The registrar is the company that registers the domain name in the registry database. Melbourne It and Network Solutions (as well as thousands of other companies) are domain name Registrars. They are accredited by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. The registrant is the person that registers the domain name with the Registrar. So, you want to buy a domain name, you provide your registrant information to the registrar as well as the domain name you wish to purchase. The registrar checks the registry to see if the doman name is available, and if it is they will register ir for you. ICANN has an FAQ that is really useful to read before purchasing a domain name at http://www.icann.org/compliance/faq.html

I have a domain name and unused hosting. What's a good business idea for an online business?
I have a very catchy domain name, and a hosting server laying around for about a year now. I want to start some type of online business, but I'm only sixteen. What I want to start is a business that will get me some money in my pockets, not a billionaire. What are some good ideas I should start? I've tried selling my things on ebay, but that's not really what I want to do. I want to provide a service, or anything on my website to make money.

There are various types of online business. Find out from the link below. I have happened to come across it and hope that it will be helpful to you. Tom

What is the difference between a domain name and web hosting?
I want to get my own website up and running, so I went to look at prices around the place... I found a good site which has domain names at $11/year, but I'm confusing myself because I'm not sure of the difference between a domain name and web hosting - I want quite a lot of space, and I will use Frontpage to make my site because that also has an upload facility attached, so I just need the domain name right? However, I cant see anything about how much space I get when I buy a domain name, so this makes me think I need to get web hosting.... please help!! Thanks :) I'm still confused - so if it says Domain Names $11 and then Web Hosting $164.50, do I need both? Or can I just buy a Domain Name and use Frontpage to upload my pages to that name? Sorry... I can be a bit thick sometimes...

Go to "https://www.godaddy.com" you can get both for $8.95 a year and lower. Depending on what you want and need. They support Frontpage. A domain name works like an address forwarding service. All of your Web site content sits on a computer with a unique address. This is called an IP address. An IP address is made up of a series of numbers, such as 123.23.234.45. Your domain name directs visitors to your site using this IP address. We use domain names instead of IP addresses because most people find it easier to remember a name rather than a series of numbers. In order to choose the right hosting plan, you’ll need to consider a few things: Design How was your Web site designed? For example, if you designed an ASP or ASP.NET Web site, you'll need to find a Windows hosting plan. If you have a Web site that uses CGI or PHP, you'll need to get a Linux hosting plan. Traffic How much traffic or how many visitors do you expect monthly? The more visitors or traffic you expect on your site, the higher the bandwidth you will need. Size How large is your site? If you're planning on having a large site with a lot of multimedia content, you'll probably need additional disk space. Hope this helps.

the best and cheapest website to register a domain name and web hosting?
i need to set up a website but before that i need to find a website to get a domain name and also web hosting with cool facilities. Do you know the one?

For .COM / .NET / .ORG domains, stick to GoDaddy.com They are the world's largest domain registrars and provide 5GB hosting (banner supported) and 25 MB email account for free with every domain. Domains typically range from 6.59 to 9.95 If you look around the net, you will also be able to easily get GoDaddy coupon codes that further reduce your billing. one coupon is 'saveten' that applies a straight 10% off on your bill. If you purchase hosting at GoDaddy, the domain is only 1.99 for the first year. You can also buy hosting for $1/month at 3ivx. Avoid 1&1 like plague. I had a terrible experience with their billing. For .IN domains, go for MITSU.IN. They are the cheapest. I can vouch for GoDaddy and Mitsu since I have loads of domains registered with them and websites hosted with GoDaddy since 2000.

Could I transfer a yahoo domain name to godaddy hosting?
I want to purchase a domain name from yahoo and I already have 3 year hosting from godaddy, would it be possible to transfer the domain name to godaddy's hosting account that I own? I am 99% sure the answer is yes but I don't want to start spending money everywhere without being sure.

Yes, you should be able to configure the DNS settings at Yahoo to point to the hosting server at Godaddy, if the domain registration purchased at Yahoo allows for "domain/DNS management". I am not sure if Yahoo will have free domain/DNS management or you need to add that to your cost. If you use something like Dotster, you need to add the domain tools when purchasing the domain.

Can I Buy and register a domain name without an hosting package?
I want to buy/register a domain name outright and not pay for hosting package, simply to register until such time as I build a website or sell/transfer the domain to someone else. Can anyone confirm that this is common practice/suggest a good company to buy/register domains with.Am looking to pay a one off low cost fee,not ongoing monthly fee.

Yes, you can buy (register) a domain name without a hosting package. This is usually is less than ten dollars a year from most registrars. I suggest http://www.TemeculaValleyDomains.net you can get .com registrations for $6.95 per year.
