Dns Domain Hosting
How can you get a free domain without having to buy a hosting plan and free DNS management?
I dont know why anyone would do that. Thats like asking for the free toaster without opening the bank account.
You can get free hosting. And you can get free DNS. But free registration without buying something seems unlikely. I have seen it as cheap as $5 for a year.
I pointed a CNAME record in my domain's DNS to my yahoo sm biz hosting account. But I get Error 400. Why?
I have 2 domains. One is hosted by yahoo and the other is not. I set up a CNAME record on the non-Yahoo domain to point to a sub-domain of the Yahoo domain. Still with me?
Unfortunately, I get "Error 400 - Bad Request" when I try to access the page.
Any idea why or how I can fix this?
No, I don't, sorry. And I tried to find out for you, but ran into a brick wall. Yahoo Help is like that, yes they are. Go to this page http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/domains/domainfeatures/advanceddns/advanceddns-03.html
Make sure you did everything correctly in the set up. If you did, click on the contact button at the bottom of the page and ask Yahoo! to explain the error code and what you can do to fix it.
Which is better transfer domain or Point DNS to my new web hosting?
Would u pls tell me why?
if one was simply "better" than the other, the competing method would not exist or would not be an option on the list to choose from, point DNS is usually the cheaper to go, transfer domain costs $
Pointing webhost DNS to free domain / Domains that support DNS pointing?
Hi i recently got myself a webhost, and selected my old free domain name at www.cydots.com to host at, however, the webhosting co. informed me i had to change my domain to point at their DNS servers, however my domain hosting website www.cydots.com had no such function, where can i get a free domain / or sub domain that supports this pointing of DNS servers? *_*
But, my domain was free, it may not belong to me. and its a subdomain. :/ actually its www.classbook.net.ms
Go to one of the following website and initiate a transfer of domain name:-
http://www.ipmirror.com.sg
You may contact IP mirror (maybe its more conveniently for you becos they are located in Singapore) to help you on the transfer of domain registry (from your previous domain registry to the new one)
We have a domain name hosted by Yahoo/Geocities that we pay for, but we need to set the DNS?
We're getting ready to use a family "blogging" website where we could use the domain name that we currently own via Yahoo. This blogging website says we need to set the DNS to a specific name they've given us in order to do this. I am NOT technically savvy so any help you could give me about how to do this would be greating appreciated!
Here's what their website tells us to do:
set your DNS (Domain Name System) to the following:
dns1.quimbik.com
dns2.quimbik.com
If you are using yahoo small business go to the domain control panel to delegate DNS. But it is probably best if you go back to your registrar and delegate DNS from there.
setting up dns on a domain name for a free webhost?
i have a domain name, i also up until recently had a paid webhost that went belly-up.
to configure the two i had to email the guys i got the domain name from and ask them to update the dns entry for my domain to the dns addresses i got from the web host - if i wanted to use a free webhost is the same thing available and does anything need to be done on the webhost side other than providing it's dns addresses to my domain host?
@netsploit:
i think you've misinterpreted a big lump of what i've said thus far.
with regards to your 1) i do not have a free domain, i am paying for it yearly in the standard fashion so i'm not sure that 'You should NEVER agree to a free domain.' applies to what i said.
with regards to your 2) the company from whom i get the domain name and the company from whom i was getting the webspace from are unrelated so i'm not sure 'Never let hosts buy a domain for you.' is relevant to my situation.
to reiterate my original question, how can i use a free webspace host with a paid for domain name and what steps are required to get them working together without resorting to the use of frames?
Here's what to do. Go to http://www.000webhost.com/?id=23996 and sign up for a free webhost if you don't already have one. (They are the fastest free webhost out there with loads of storage and bandwidth without any ads).
On the signup page, there is a place to put in your own domain name. It will also tell you what their name servers are. Then, you go to who you registered your domain with, login to your account, and you should find a place where you can change your DNS name servers (it's usually set to one's the domain name provider has). Just change it to the ones that 000webhost gives you and when someone types in your domain it will go to the right place. If it doesn't happen right away, then give it a little time and it will work.

Is it possible to test how far DNS propagation has progressed for a website domain?
The domain and hosting package was purchased 3 days ago and I'm concerned that something is wrong since nothing is showing....
DNS usually takes from 12-24 hours to propagate throughtout the internet. Of course sometimes it takes up to 48 hours. If you don't see the change within at least 48 hours, the DNS server you are using isn't propagating the DNS entries correctly.
Might I suggest www.afraid.org. They are free and their propagation rates range from 4-12 hours from what I've experienced.
Hope this helps.
How do I set up my own DNS Server in order to host my own domain/ website?
I have a registered domain (say xyz.com). I want to host my own website and do so without using any thrid party hosting services. I want to learn to work with DNS servers and would like to host my own DNS server for my domain. I have Windows Server 2003 installed with the DNS role configured (single forwarding zone) and set to xyz.com. How do I proceed with taking control of my address ? Could someone tell me how the DNS and anything else would need to be configured for me to be able to post to my address ?
Thanks in advance
What I have done so far is:- configured the DNS role on WIndows Server 2003 for xyz.com as a domain with a single forward lookup zone. So you are saying that I should get myself familiar with DCs first and then continue from there. I'm kinda lost. I have never done this before, so I don't know where to start from.

I think you should find the dns info within your account. Or you can always contact the support if you can't find it.
Free DNS Hosting?
Wheres the best place to free host a DNS record? I have bought a domain and i need to put the records somewhere.
Daniel
Well, I have used zoneedit.com for this at times. I use it when my dns servers are going to be down for a day or 2 while I make adjustments to the machines. It's free and easy to use.
