Learn security and trouble client problems like down time and errors. Please any books out there

Well, you will need more than one book..! Start with http://www.amazon.com/Teach-Yourself-MySQL-Apache-Hours/dp/067232489X easy to read, great information on apache, etc. Then get a good solid book on LINUX, centos isn't that different from Red Hat etc. I like the Red Hat Linux Bible as well as Administrators Guide To Linux. http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/linag3/ Good Luck ADD: Do yourself a favor and install a control panel like http://zervex.com or http://www.ispconfig.org/ There is a complete how to guide for this one on http://www.howtoforge.com/howtos/linux/centos

Your computer is plenty up to running as a web server. If your PC is XP Pro, you should install IIS. This is Microsoft's "free" web server. To do this go to Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs->Add/Remove Windows Components and tick the box by IIS. Click next until it install. If it is XP Home, you will need to get software to run a web server. Fortunately there is an excellent free piece of software called Apache - use the link below to download it. You will need to configure your firewall software to allow incoming HTTP connections. You should open Port 80 for HTTP (internet) connections. You may wish to install PHP and MySQL to allow better websites, e.g. member logins, shops and other dynamic websites. Use the links below to get them. Apache, PHP and MySQL are all available in free versions, and are some of the best in their fields. I hope this helps. PS: I have also given a link to a guide to installing the free programs.

How can I make my own dedicated web server?
Hi, I'm currently trying to convert an altered (suped up) IBM Aptiva which was originally made for windows 98 into a web server. I would like to use this to host several sites. I'm trying to choose between either windows server 2003 or linux. Anybody have any advice?

That depends a lot on your experience with or willingness to learn Linux. If you have either I would recommend it hands down. For one it is free, two you can more easily set up virtual sites (you said you wanted to run several) with just a copy paste in a config file etc. If the sites grow more advanced you might need php or mysql integration. If you think you will need this I would set it up from the start, will be much easier. Main advantage to a Linux box is less maintenance and will run forever barring hardware issues. Windows needs regular re-booting etc even with the server class OS. Also if your box was originally designed for Win 98 you may have a hard time running 2003 on such old hardware where Linux will have few issues. Ignore all this if you don't know Linux nor want to go through the learning curve on it which some don't.

Can I set up Source Dedicated server on a standard web server?
Just wondering if its possible, my firewall refuses to budge even though i have changed several settings, so i was wondering if i could host the server somewhere else.

I think this maybe in the wrong category. Posting this here is like teaching quantum physics to first graders

I'm thinking of buying a dedicated server?
I'm thinking of buying a dedicated server to host some game and web servers ... now since i'm not really a pro at this, I'd like to know if these specifications would run great game and web servers ... - 100mb/s connection - 6GB RAM - Intel Quad Q6600 Processor - 160GB HD SATA .... Thanks!
