Dedicated Server Hosting
Hi, i need some help with dedicated server hosting.?
I want to host a video sharing website, kinda like youtube, if someone could please give me some help with the infrastucture, like dedicated servers, how much bandwidth i will use up, also how do i estimate how many users or tarffic i will get in the future?
Will Some also send me their personal email add so i can ask some more questions?
Thank you.
An excellent dedicated host would be www.theplanet.com . I warn you though, the bandwidth will cost you. You will need unmetered bandwidth that costs quite a bit otherwise you will be paying a hefty cost on bandwidth overages if people use your site often. Youtube uses about a couple hundred terabytes of bandwidth per month. 10mbps unmetered costs about 400$ per month and the cost doubles for 20 mbps and increases even more for 50 - 100 megabytes per second.
You will need some backend software as well. Youtube uses Lighttpd as a web server software as it is extremely fast and can support thousands of requests without bogging down the processor and doesn't hog memory. You will also need some system in which users can upload videos, software that will convert that to an FLV format and a flash player system that will stream it to users. A very good player is http://www.jeroenwijering.com/?item=JW_FLV_Player and it is free I believe. I hope this answers most of your questions. You can email me at my username @ yahoo.com if u got any more questions.
Also btw,
I wouldn't recommend this to anyone that doesn't have much experience in this field as the upfront costs will bankrupt you and it is difficult to compete with all the other video sharing sites out there currently.
Who is providing good dedicated server hosting in moderate prices ?
Thanks in advance
There are a number of great dedicated server hosting providers. I would personally seek one that does only dedicated hosting. When looking for a provider match your needs with what they have to offer. If you are not a system admin steer away from the $49-149 monthly offers as you most likely will be required to be the admin on the server. I am providing you with a list of great resources and companies to review.

What is the cheapest dedicated Linux server hosting package available in Chicago? I'm looking for something similar to fastservers.net, but cheaper.
The data center and servers MUST be physically located in Chicago for my purposes.
Thanks

check cihost.com , they have Chicago datacenter
List your best choices and warning on Best "Dedicated Server" hosting and on whom to avoid?
From your experience or from programming knowledge, List your best choices and warning
on whom to avoid. Best "Dedicated Server" Hosting with no set-up fee, no down time, no hidden fee, great live online support, more than 100 GB memmory, more than 1000 GB bandwidth, month to month contract. Prefer server located in USA with price range of $49 - $ 69 per month. Need those who keep their word, money back guarantee, and any promise they make.
Well, first off you are not going to be able a "good" dedicated server for $49 - $ 69 per month, in fact asking for that is like saying "hey please recommend some company that will be gone in 2 months with my money". If you want a good dedicated server you will likely need to pay $100 at the minimum and if you are set on $50 to $70 you might be better off getting a VPS from someone.
So here are recs...
1. The best company is rackspace.com ie rackspace, but they are super expensive so don't even look at their site.
2. HostGator - not a bad budget option, but well over 2x what you want.
3. UK2 - uk2.net - nice one for the UK and USA - more in line with your budget.
4. liquidweb - liquidweb.com, another nice one but more expensive then you want.
For what you want there is no good or best, just junk, might try webhostingtalk.com and see if there is a good deal.
When choosing a dedicated hosting server, should I go for a faster processor speed or more memory?
My usage for the server will mainly be for my clients, who mostly have simple websites that do not require alot of processing as far as I can imagine. Should I hesitate when choosing a Celeron processor versus a Pentium 4 processor when the benefit to choosing the slower cpu is a gain in memory from 512mb to 1gb?
If your clients are just serving up static websites, a Celeron will do. Go for the memory for sure.
I agree that a Celeron is an odd choice for a professional server; but it really depends on your application. If your clients are just dentists who have websites with some cute photos and their telephone number, then a Celeron could provide hundreds of these clients just fine.
If your clients have any sort of server side processing (checkout carts; SQL-driven blogs; etc.), just pay the extra few bucks to get a better processor.
What are the best overall dedicated server hosting companies for web sites?
best means:
- good pricing model
- great security features
- 24/7 help desk (tier 1-3)
- add-on services such as shopping carts, cc processing, dns...)
- 5 9's up time
- incremental and full backup with web access control
- other
I use and recommend Pair Networks; I believe they have everything you're looking for.
What's the difference between web hosting and a dedicated server?
With many web hosting packages, your web content is served up (to the 'net) on a server that is actually shared with other people who also have web content. There are normally restrictions on what type of programs can be run to support your site (from a list of their supported programs). For example, they may include support for mySQL but not Oracle. You may sometimes find that response time for your site is slowed down because other sites share the same physical server.
If you have a dedicated server, it's, well, dedicated. You can at many places supply your own server, but at others you have to pick from what they offer. But you typically have more freedom about what programs you can run to support your web services. It's also more expensive.
How can I find a dedicated server to host a game?
I'm trying to find a way to host a game online for other people to play, and I have heard I need a dedicated server to do so. I am not very familiar with how this works, so could someone please advise me on what to do? Thank you for the help!
You will be given root access to the server and you can upload your applications to your server. A dedicated server account usually allows you more bandwidth and CPU usage than a shared hosting account. You will not have the same restriction like when you are on shared server.

Should I buy a server OR use hosting companies dedicated server?
I have just created a website that is guarenteed to get high bandwidth. I dont have a server(s) in fact I dont know much about servers. A hosting company has an offer for a dedicated server, I just simpluy upload my website to their server and they host the site. There offer includes UNLIMITED BANDWIDTH. However, they are charging £400 Per month.
Can anyone give me a rough idea of how much it is to buy a server that would withstand high bandwidth. (im not talking YOUTUBE bandwidth here) however I would need a high amount of bandwidth.
Also, If I do decide to buy a server and run my website from my own home, what internet providers would allow me to do this. as there is the "fair usage policy"
Hope you can help....
I would highly recommend using media temple for your hosting. They offer a grid system that transfers power to the areas of the grid that are getting the most traffic. If your site suddenly receives explosive growth you can migrate to their dedicated (dpv) Nitro servers.
The grid hosting service is about $19.95 a month and the dedicated Nitro servers are $750.00 a month but they are top notch. Obviously there are several tiers in between for you to choose from. Many huge companies use their hosting service, like nike and starbucks.
You don't want to run a server out of your home on a highly trafficked site, it's a bad idea. First off, you want guaranteed uptime and reliability. Second, your home network pales in comparison to the OC3 connections that you get through a Tier 4 data center like Media Temple has. Also, you want redundancy and a sophisticated backup solution, this will take you a lot of time and money to implement.
