Dedicated Internet Server
How can i connect to the internet? My work set up a dedicated server and I connect to work via a VPN... Help?
Hi,
Basically my work set up an internet connection to my house and I connect to them using a VPN.
They gave me a 'business router' but I believe the internet may just be ordinary BT broadband?
I asked someone at work and they said that it is a 'dedicated server'... (I don't know much about this really.)
Anyway I was just wondering whether anyone knows if I can connect my home pc / ps3 through this connection?
For example would plugging in a normal router instead of the business one work?
Thanks!
Alan
I forgot to say that at the moment I can't connect my ps3 (through the business router)...
Depends on the actual hardware and how it has been setup. Many companies don't allow employees to use their hardware/connections for private use, as there may be a taxable benefit involved, and security issues. Your best option in the absence of more information about your setup is to contact the technical support people at your work.
Dedicated Internet for Servers?
What would reccomend as some good dedicated internet service providers that allow servers to be run on them. I need at least 5 static IP addresses. And it to not be to expensive. Preferebly under 70 dollars.
Thanks,
EZ
Im looking for an ISP, similar to comcast, or verizon that can allow servers on their netowork...NOT a webhost.

Edit: No isp will let you run a dedicated server on them would take to much bandwith you are going to have to outsource your site.
we need a new dedicated server. Need help finding the fastest one. does a ping test help?
we are currently on Godaddy and thinking about moving to lunarpages. I don't know if this test really means what I think it means but when I ping both godaddy and lunarpages, lunarpages comes back about 23ms and godaddy about 55ms. Does that mean lunarpages servers are faster/better? or does this all have to do with my distance to their physical servers and my internet connection?
A ping may vary depending on traffic on your ISP and various other factors. It's not a reliable method of determining whether one server is faster than another.
There are also other things to consider, besides just the network connection, for making such a determination.
If you want to pay the cost of a DS or OC line, I'll host a dedicated server for you. :)
If I buy a dedicated server, do I still have to pay a bill per month? Does anyone know anything about it?
Does anyone know anything about dedicated servers? There is nothing helpful on the internet and everybody wants to charge for answers. Also does anyone know anything about video streaming software? Can somebody help me!?!?!?
Yes, with a dedicated server you have to pay a monthly bill, but most places would let you pay quarterly or yearly. What you are mainly paying for is the servers connection to the internet. One thing to keep in mind is that with a dedicated server, you are responsible for it if anything goes wrong with the server software wise. Though most places will fix the problem for a fee of course.
Source Dedicated server - Question?
I was wondering if running an internet server (For counter stike source, Team fortress 2......) from your pc is bad in any way. Like could a player access your pc, it's files etc with means such as hacks or virus'?
Thanks
Giving anyone access to your machine always comes with risks. Even if you know the other people you can't be sure about the state of their machines and if they have a virus infection then there is always a small risk involved. To be fair the risk may be very small for the connections made by games in most instances, but I would always advise that if you want to run a server that you do so on a dedicated machine and have a backup image in case of a problem.
Which is the best way to exchange files between 2 persons over the internet without having own FTP server?
Hi,
I have a friend and we need to exchange files and wonder which is the best (reliable, generous enough free space) way to do that.
I would appreciate suggestions but please discard the option of setting own FTP Server as option because that would mean to have to dedicate a computer to be connected all the time to receive the files.
Thanks but what is in my mind is a similar way of having a file server. Basically a place where I can upload files to store them, being able of organize them in folders, accessible from a web browser and free.
Instant messaging and email do not offer some of these features.
Microsoft Groove allows for file sharing/exchange. Also, one easy way is simply using an Instant Messenger client.
