Is Windows XP good for a home network with shared external hard drives?
I have setup one of my computers to be dedicated to host all of my external hard drives at home. I find that the transfer rate suffers greatly (from 2 times to 10 times slower than being directly connected to the computer needing the files). All hard drives are usb external. I was wondering if a WRTSL54GS storage router with USB hard drive sharing could be faster for data access on a home network than going through a winXP computer? Would linux work well enough to dispurse the data faster? Something like Ubuntu server edition or something? How does linux work with other windows os based computers on a small home network? All I need in the end is to have a place where all my ext. drives are connected and accessible with good transfer rates from other computers. Thanks.

If you want to have NAS (network attached storage) you might consider something that is Ethernet connected instead of USB 2.0 connected as Ethernet has a higher transfer rate either through a direct connection using an Ethernet crossover cable to the computer in use or by Ethernet connection through your router if it has enough ports. For example: http://shop2.outpost.com/%7BOq8dTkK1GYrcskBQ1JcLeQ**.node1%7D/product/5223907;jsessionid=Oq8dTkK1GYrcskBQ1JcLeQ**.node1?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG I have Linux on a second partition on my laptop and Linux can see NTFS and FAT32 files on the Windows XP Pro partitions. However, I have not yet been able to write to those files. They are read only. I can pull files from Windows onto my Linux partition and work with them there just fine. Windows doesn't see the Linux files at all.

Check to see if your modem - not your router - is doing network address translation (see if it's on the list at http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/routerindex.htm ) If it is, see http://www.webdingers.com/router.html

can i host a small cs dedicated server on my old dell (in LAN party 4 ppl max)?
its a very old dell, 300-420mhz? 320 ram, windows 2000 pro so basically does a host computer have to be fast to host a lan server or is it dependent on the lan card and speed

the computer would have to also be fast. If you are having a small lan just pick whoever has the fastest computer and have them run the server off of theirs while they play. Everyone then connect to them. Thats what me and my friends used to do. You all will have very fast response time as it is since you are on a local lan time with less than 10ms response time.

I am new to servers ?
I'm very new to server platforms, but since a lot of people have been asking me to create web pages for them i figured the easiest way would be to get my own server and host off of it however i'm a newb when it comes to servers and was confused when I was looking for one seeing racks blades and regular ones in desktop cases . I'm unsure of the type I should get but i do know that i would probably be hosting web sites and i made need one if i actually do get my game finished. I do know that any pc has the potential to be a server and i could very well use the one I have but i'd rather a dedicated server. Can anyone advise me of the type of server i should invest in. Also i've been researching on how servers run and i came to find that ubuntu has a server edition but its GUI-less. Would i be able to control everything from my computer even though i primarily run windows (I do have a wubi installation) or say i invested in and used dreamweaver would i be able to upload that to the server and run it, without having to remember a host of terminal lines @ You did what? RTFM! : If I rented a server would I be able to create a mail server and several different/ unrelated web sites?

A simple way to get your feet wet: Use an old system and install Kubuntu or Fedora 8 on it. For this exercise an AMD 3000+ processor, 512M o RAM and hopefully a Gigabit Ethernet card, with 40G hard drive should be plenty. Hardware costs are minimal for this. Next, get Apache up and running as a web server. Then play with that on your local LAN for a while. If you're still enthused, get a commercial grade Cable Internet circuit, so you don't get kicked off your existing ISP for running a web server, and put that server on the web. Commercial Cable is about $100 per month in my area. Once you've mastered that, you'll be in a much better position to decide if you really want your own commercial grade server or if something less substantial will work for your needs. I've worked for companies that have $1200 servers. I've worked for companies that have $1200 worth of Ethernet cables. Good luck and have fun! If you install the Ubuntu GUI-less Server it would just be a headless system. You can do this with standard Kubuntu also. You can install VNC on a headless system, or use putty for the command line interface. I prefer GUI when I can get it. Headless sure, GUI-less, I don't think so.
