What's a good configuration for a web development server for local network?
We're about to purchase a development server for our team of web developers - php and javascript programmers. We're planning on running LAMP and Subversion. What is the best hardware (processor, memory, manufacturer) and software (flavor of linux, setup, etc.) configuration? And what's the best way to network it to a team of 4 Windows machines?

It really depends on your budget. "Best" hardware is, to my mind, the fastest and largest capacity you can reasonably afford. For this sort of server, I'd choose more RAM over faster processor, and fastest/biggest hard drives I could find. I'm partial to Slackware Linux, as it's free and very stable. If you're using Subversion, then just regular old TCP/IP should be sufficient, but you could easily configure Samba for Windows sharing if you chose to. The level of your question indicates you're not particularly comfortable doing this yourself, so it's probably worth your money to pay a consultant to help you make these decisions and get it all installed and running. That gives you the additional safety net of having someone available to help you out if things go sideways.

Well IBM's website would be a good start. If you navigate through their support link, you can find the server an type through the pull downs and locate the documentation related to that server. I'd probably start with the Server Guide document.

Server configuration always depends on the Load (Utilization of CPU, Memory, Disk Space, Network) depend on all these parameters anybody can tell you which server can suits to you better. But in general the best server configuration is IBM xSeries 100 Express.

A problem with my Domain Name Server configuration?
My windows Vista laptop says my DNS server is down but both my parents can get online using their macs so it doesn't make any sense! I've seen people say to use opendns.org but i cant get on my laptop to do it! And th most annoying thing is if i leave my computer off for a long time (overnight) it works fine after. This problem is soooo annoying! Please Help!!

You can manually assign domain name servers in Windows: Control Panel > Network Connections > Local Area Connection > Connection > Properties > TCP/IP > Properties > Use the following DNS Server addresses... Try typing in the nameservers at OpenDNS: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 Does this help? The other option is to contact your ISP and find out what the problem is between your machine and their DNS.

I'm not sure your question is posed the right way. I'm reading b/w the lines because it looks like you want to know where they are in OExp. In either case: Open Outlook Express > Tools > Internet Options. I've been in Mac world for awhile, so this is all by memory. Find the account you want to edit or set up a new one. It should prompt you through it pretty simply. POP is your incoming server and SMTP is your outgoing server. You need to fill these in to send and receive mail from Outlook Express, along with your email address, username and password. You have to get the settings from your ISP (Internet Service Provider). They probably have this information on their website or a local number for you to call them and get it. The address will usually look something like this (using comcast as an example): POP server: mail.comcast.net SMTP server: smtp.comcast.net You have to have an account with a username and password for this to work. Gmail offers free POP access, meaning you can get your Gmail email through Outlook rather than logging in to the website. Yahoo also offers this for a small fee.

For DNS you can use system-config-bind Read /etc/squid/squid.conf it is commented well. Also read /etc/mail/sendmail.m4 and /etc/dovecot.conf for mail imap and pop.

Best server configuration?
I was wondering if you had a search engine that had yahoo's capabilities but with only about 450,000 registered users, and about 1,500,000 visitors a month, what would be the best server configuration, as far as GHz is concerned as well as the amount of cores. Also could i get advice on hard drive space, and the amount of ram needed, also note that money is not really an object and im looking to out osurce this to a hosting company so i need to basically tell them what kind of dedicated servers i need

Depends on how much money you have to throw at it and how many nodes you need to connect. A star or hyrbid star network is typical. If it's a WAN and you have the money, a mesh or particl mesh network provides good fault tolerance. You will need a good DNS and Web server as well. Over a million visitors is a LOT of visitors so you want some serious server RAM for performance. I would also invest in a good data back-up system. Data is a companies life blood.
