Compare Web Hosting
Can someone explain to a dummy how much space and/or how large is 20 MG for a web site?
I am comparing web hosting & site building companies and would like to get an idea of approx how many web pages or how many telephone yellow pages 20 MG would actually take up. Thanks for your help.
I am comparing web hosting & site building companies and would like to get an idea of approx how many web pages or how many telephone yellow pages (for example) 20 MG would actually take up. The pics & graphics will not be unusually large.
I'll assume you mean 20 MB -- I have no idea what 20 MG is! Maybe you mean 20 GB?
If it's 20 MB, it's definitely below average, by a long shot.
Many companies with their cheapest hosting package give at least 20GB:
http://www.verio.com/web-hosting/ (20GB)
http://smallbusiness.yahoo.com/webhosting/compare.php (5GB)
http://www.websitesource.com/?AID=1629651&PID=799335 (5GB)
https://www.godaddy.com/gdshop/offers/cross_sell.asp?se=%2B&ci=6018 (5GB).
I'd say 5 GB seems about the average for cheap hosting plans. 20GB would be above average.
As far as how much can fit in this space, well, that's tricky and depends upon the content you're going to have.
Suppose you were just going to use the webspace as a personal blog. Then it's possible that 20 MB would be enough. New pages, with only text and some small grapahics probably only usually are only 5-10 KB large. Assume 10KB per page on average, then if you had 20MB space, you could have roughly 2000 pages, which is an enormous website. With 5 GB, you could 500,000 pages, and with 20GB, you could have 2,000,000 pages! Whooot! Not very likely though...
Most likely you'd also have some pictures along with those pages. For a fairly big image (say 800x600) that's been optimized (e.g. JPEG compression/quality lowered), you could expect a size of around 30-40 kb. Larger resolution images, or images with no compression could of course be much larger. However, assume 40kb per image: with 20MB of space, that would mean you could fit 500 images, which seems like plenty, unless you're digital camera-happy and post hudreds of pictures per week.
Other considerations would be if you were posting PDF files (which can be very large), video clips (also very large), or large or uncompressed images, etc. In this case, I don't think 20MB would get you very far, as one medium length video or large PDF file could use up the ENTIRE 20MB of space.
So, it totally depends on what you're planning. If you're going to have a simple webpage, used only as a blog, with small pages and a limited number of pictures, 20MB might be enough. But, considering how inexpensive these other hosts are that offer 5GB+ of space for a small monthly fee, I'd recommend against any host which gives as little as 20MB!
All that said, web space isn't everything. The next most important aspect to a plan, in my opinion (besides the basics like Linux vs. Windows hosting) is bandwidth. There's no use in having lost of webspace if the host doesn't also provide enough bandwidth for users to access what you have in your webspace. Keep that in mind when you're shopping around.
Any idea about a relatively cheap & good quality web host with ColdFusion support?
Or maybe an honest and independent web site for comparing hosts?

Looking for a WEB HOSTING company, any suggestions?
Hello everyone!
I am looking for a new web hosting server and I have had a lot of information but not much helpful critics.
I heard of HOST MONSTER as an excellent alternative, and my boss wanted register.com, but they really cant compare to what Host Monster offers.
I am almost convinced of going for host monster, but does anyone have any comments or suggestions on the later or any other web hosting companies?
Are they reliable and most of all, easy to deal with in case something happens?
Cheers and Thanks!

Hi,
The confusion is understandable, because Yahoo! Web Hosting and Yahoo! Merchant Solutions actually share a lot of features! Both plans include a web site, with a domain and a professional email account to match. The biggest difference you'll want to consider is the kind of ecommerce tools you need.
Yahoo! Web Hosting plans include PayPal button tools, which are easy to set up and allow you to accept credit card and other payments on your site; you can then fulfill and ship your orders yourself. PayPal buttons are perfect if you're not expecting heavy sales volume at first, and if you have time to handle each order from payment to delivery. They also don't require a big financial investment: On top of your Web Hosting account, you'll pay either nothing or a small fee for each transaction. (Learn more about the cost of using PayPal buttons with Web Hosting here: http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/webhosting/addons/paypal/paypal-04.html.)
Yahoo! Merchant Solutions is designed for small business owners who want a complete ecommerce system for their site. A Merchant Solutions account makes it easy to set up and design a store (learn more here: http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/store/store-08.html). You can use either PayPal or a merchant account to manage payment processing right on your site, use built-in tools to manage your orders, fulfillment and shipping. Besides the cost of your Merchant Solutions account, you'll pay fees on each transaction. (Check our help center for more on the cost: http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/store/aboutms/aboutms-01.html.)
Not every business needs a Yahoo! Merchant Solutions plan to start -- some merchants just don't need so many ecommerce features. If you decide to start with a Web Hosting account, you can always upgrade to our Merchant Solutions package later, so just pick the plan that's most comfortable for you! You can find out more about both packages (and see sample sites) on the Yahoo! Small Business home page at http://smallbusiness.yahoo.com.
Good luck!

Which web hosting company is best?
http://www.daylon.com/hosting/
That site is comparing 2 host - Midphase and Powweb.
Both have similar plans.....but which one do you think is the best?

oh, i'm sorry... does that link not apply to your question? i just figured that if you could post that link to every question you answer that maybe i could try it too.
i don't want to be a jerk, but you intentionally only answer relationship questions so you can post that link and i think that's lame. you give a two or three word response to every question then offer this link that you believe has the answers to EVERY single question you answer. it doesn't. try offering some insight from personal experiences. try to actually help some of the people who are asking real relationship questions. aren't you expecting that from the rest of us?
then again, if you only care about getting points and not the people asking the questions, forget everything i just said. have a great time and good luck getting to the next level!
I need a web hosting solution fast!?
hi, godaddy seems to be a good choice when talking about web hosting, but what kind of control panel do they offer? Can someone tell me about their control panel? Some pictures or streaming video would help. Thanks. What do you guys think of dot5hosting compared to godaddy and even hostmonster. Thanks
I use hostway and I'm really happy with them. They are a bit more pricey but if you will be using it a lot and want the job done right they are the place to go.
Web host offers Linux or Windows as the server operating system. Which to choose?
This will be my first web host and I"m learning as I go.
I know Linux is more secure and stable than Windows. But I'm familiar with Windows since I use XP. I've dabbled in Linux in the past but my understanding of it is tiny compared to Windows.
Which one should I choose? Or does it not really matter?
Definitely choose Linux. It is by far the most stable for a host. You can use tools like PHP, MySQL, and other great opensource languages. With windows server you are usually stuck with ASP for your server side language.
I have used many different hosts (including setting my own up), and I always come back to linux because there is soo much more control
Could someone who speaks English as their first language comment on these short sentences please?
Hi to all,
I want to advertise my site with google search engine. I want to be certain that my texts are without any grammatical mistakes. Since I have limitation in number of my used letters, please don’t try to edit my sentences to improve them. If they are acceptable to use and are not odd sentences please don’t suggest touch them.
Thx

Web sites as Internet’s life forms: Evolution or Intelligent Design?
Hi, I have a question.
If we could compare Internet to Nature, and web sites to organisms, then do you see any evidence for evolution? Natural selection being main mechanism of evolution, suggests that competition for survival and reproduction leads to passing advantageous traits to the next generations. At the other hand, intelligent design suggests that certain features of living things are better explained by intelligent cause.
It would make sense that only features and technologies and even trends would lead to more and more advanced "life forms". My question is: if this is true, then what are the evidences?
IMO it looks like free web hosting and illegal Photoshop and Dreamweaver are the natural selection killers. And it also looks like such redundant features as reflections, glass buttons, splatters, torn paper and masking tape backgrounds, flowing ink and circular ornaments, all cap lettering and other design elements are the ones surviving and reproducing like it's going out of
...going out of style.
Darwin must turn over nightly over people's attempts to apply evolution to such things.
Seriously though... the "strength" of a website is merely its popularity. Visitors create ad revenue which pays to keep it afloat.
I would say it clearly does not apply for a number of reasons.
One: "illegal" yet popular websites, get shut down
Two: once popular and hopeful websites will pay to stay up even if its not a good idea
Three: popularity can kill a website (underdogs, for example)
Four: Websites do not change for the sake of competition. They are not replaced by others and when innovations occur they are usually independent of already present websites. Their descendents are weaker. e.g. myspace and facebook dominate over all those other wannabe social networks
Push come to shove, websites are the result of something outside the internet: people. They persist because of people, they die because of people, they "evolve" because of people. They do nothing on their own.
If they are subject to any such theory it's certainly ID.
My parents think everyone I talk to on MSN etc, are paedophiles, how can I convince them otherwise?
I have a sizeable contact list with about 99% of people I know from school, but the other 1% really worries my parents. I was after web hosting, and one of the people I met off PlaneShift, offered me cheapish hosting compared to what I was prepared to pay, however my parents will have nothing of it, even though he lives in another country and I'm safe around the internet. Please someone help me, its a bit annoying that I can't talk to anyone who doesn't know me in person. My friends have people on their list from other countries and their parents are okay as long as they dont give out personal details, which I dont do anyway. Can someone help me out a bit?
Okay, thanks for the quick response, I'd like to point out that I know that this guy is in another country, I have a tracer and I checked his IP, its checks out that he's in Spain. And technically, the definition of a paedophile is someone who asks you for details about yourself, the most he knows is my first name, and that is that. So can you really class that as a possible paedophile?
I'll repeat it, I have a tracer, and I have an addon to my MSN that locates the person I am chatting to. Both confirm the same thing. I even have the telephone number of his ISP from the network data my tracer got.
1) Your parents love you and are trying to protect you.
2) Your parents are more worldly than you are and know how sick some people can be.
3) There really are pervs out there that are preying on naive young people.
4) How do you know that he lives in another country? He could be lying about it. Everything he tells you could be a lie.
5) Don't compare your friends' parents to yours. Bad idea.
6) Read the newspaper. Watch TV. The pervs are in the news every day. They see the Internet as their personal SEX playground and you might be their next victim.
7) You think it won't happen to you because you TRUST the people on your contact list. It WILL happen if you are too trusting. Don't be naive.
8) No, I'm not your parent. But you really should do your homework, eat your vegetables, talk less on the cell phone and listen to your parents.
