Changing Webserver

Is it possible to run my own Linux Webserver through my Sky Bband Package at home? What about my ip changing?
I wish to run a Linux based computer through my router at home which allows port forwarding but Sky can't offer a static IP. Is there a way around this? Do I point my domain name at an IP address or something that will be permanent?

Two things you need to do. 1. Check with Sky's terms of service. Many ISPs do not allow the operation of servers on their lines. I don't know if Sky does or not but you don't want to get cut off for a violation of the terms. 2. Use a dynamic dns service. These services will "track" your changing IP and still allow a server or even a router to work. There are several of them available and most are free. http://www.dyndns.com/ or http://www.no-ip.com/ or http://www.zoneedit.com/ all will track your home ip even if it changes. Some of these can even work inside the router, many routers have this as an option in the firmware.

Recommend a tool to simulate a browser post to a webserver. Should be able to change header etc?

if i change webhosting server, what i have to do for PHPBB3 to be there in in new webserver?
i have my forum which is hosted by host nine web hosting server. if i want change to other webhosting, what i have do for all user database should not be changed. can i copy the dir of forum and paste in other ftp server dir.

First, make sure that the new server has the same capabilities... same versions of PHP and MySQL and other features that might be needed, like various Apache settings. Second, download/upload the files, paying special attention to any modifications you've made (themes, plug-ins, etc). Third, backup the database (probably using phpMyAdmin if you're on a shared host). Make sure to check the option to back up the SQL to a ZIP (compressed archive) file, or if your database is of any consequential size, you'll have a HUGE file on your hands). Fourth, use the cPanel utility on your new host to create a database for PHPBB3 if needed, change your configuration options to point to the new database and username and password, then import the ZIP file you saved in step three to your new database.

how do i host a webserver with a dynamic IP and a .com?
I have an apache webserver on my computer. I'm connected through the internet with a dynamic IP. I also have a .com name that I want to be able to access the webserver at all times. How do i make it so that when the IP of my computer changes, my nameserver gets updated to the new IP also.

Since your IP will change from time to time you need to let a DNS server what your IP is when it changes. First go here -> http://dyndns.org and register, add a dynamic host and download their IP updater utility. Now go to your domain's registrar website, find the domain pointing settings and make your domain name point to your dyndns site. When people type in your site.com address they will be redirected to dynamic.iphost.com Good luck.

How do I point my GoDaddy domain to my webserver?
Do I change the Nameserver? DNS? No support whatsoever... thanks in advance!

When you say "my webserver" are you referring to a computer or server you are personally running at home or a webserver that is managed by a third party..???... You have a couple of ways to "point" your GoDaddy domain to a webserver. First, You can forward all traffic to a pre-existing domain... Second if you have only one domain you simply change the nameservers to the nameservers for your webserver is hosted. To do this login to your account at GoDaddy.com Select Domains....My Domains...from the top left green menu. On the next screen click on your domain name, which will take you to yet another screen. You will have menu selections at the top, one of which will be nameservers. Click on this menu option and this is where you enter your new nameservers. Make sure..MAKE SURE..you spell them correctly. Once this has been completed the process may take up to 48 hours. If you need further assistance, please let me know.

Is there a way to create a virtual folder?
I need to create a virtual folder that links to my website, so that it automatically uploads changes and new files to the webserver. If you have DropBox, you'd know what I'm talking about. I'm trying to create an open source application like DropBox, and I need to know where to start.

Why not just use an FTP server and a FUSE client like FuseFTP?

How to change my wordpress password?

I have a friend that uses Arrival webserver for their e mails. He wants to change to DSL.?
How can he move his emails from Arrival?

When I switched to SBC DSL (now ATT DSL) they had a program that automatically did this and sent out e-mails to all my contacts about my new e-mail address. If he is switching to ATT they still do this. Probably their competitors do it as well, but best to ask them first just to make sure. Good luck.

Have multiple digital certificates in one web site?
Our website is hosted on iplanet Webserver. Currently i have a digital certificate installed. I plan to change the url to a new one. However, there should be no downtime. So I plan to have the old digital certificate and a new one installed. This would enable me to provide seamless service via the website until I take down the old digital certificate. Is this feasible. If so, can you explain how.

There can only be one SSL certificate at a time assigned to a particular port on a web server. Upon connections, a browser will request the default certificate from port 443 on the web server. Again, there can be ONE default for an assigned port. So you're not gonna be able to have them both available. You're going to have to "manage" some downtime.

DNS setting, WHat should i use in the DNS zone, the computer IP or the router IP(wan Ip)? im setting webserver
im setting up a webserver on windows 2003, my problem is that i cannot access my domain name outside the network, I can access my site by IP address(111.xxx.xxx.74). I tried to setup the zone on DNS server, but no luck. my router IP address is 111.xxx.xxx.73 what ip address should i use in DNS zone, currently im using the .74? also, i would like to ask about the TCP/IP property, what DNS server should i type there? local IP, routerIP(wanip), or 127.0.0.1? in my router setting, i noticed that the port forward textbox is left blank, should i set a port there? the DNS server of the router is set to automatic, should i change it to static? i would really appreciate some help thank you very much i forgot to mention that i got 8 static IP from the ISP xxx.xxx.xxx.x2 to xxx.xxx.xxx.x9 and also i registered the domain. i want to host the website in the machine itself. what i did is to port forward UDP 53 in the router setting. and used xxx.xxx.xxx.x4 as the DNS server in TCPIP properties

Domain name servers are usually xxx.xxx.xxx.1 so that would be first to try 111.xxx.xxx.1 that is. 127.0.0.1 refers to your machine, and is invisible elsewhere. Is your server directly on the Internet? The router typically handles IP forwarding into a network using reserved local-only IP ranges begining with 10.xxx.xxx.xxx or 192.168.xxx.xxx which will NOT travel onto the Internet. The other address - which you do not mention - is the gateway. All these will be set by DHCP by the router - which means your answer may be to allow DHCP to handle everything. The overall answer may be to enter "DHCP" in the TCP/IP Property field - if that's how such is designated. Good luck. ==== Edit for your added info: So you ARE on the Internet! Money is being spent! First, tell your local router to put your machine on DMZ status. That requires a full IP address. Only one at a time. If you have a total of 8 IP's, then tell your router to be completely passive - no security, no firewall, accept from each and every port - and MAYBE all the other IP's will work too. Next, you need to enter each and every actual and full IP address in your setup. No DHCP for you! Start with the DNS - I'd stongly advise to reference your ISP's DNS address to avoid maintaining your own DNS service. Your router will know and report that number. Gateway is the full IP address of your local router. What you're pointing to is the way to get to the Internet, not the Internet itself. The router takes it from there. Last, dump Windows and use Linux. I've NEVER had a Windows box succeed for long on a direct-connect to the Internet. Never. The many problems with Windows were due to odd implementation methods, security breaches and even routine updates causing misconfigurations. Horrible system for that purpose IMHO.
