Buy Domain Name
What to do if I buy a domain name off somebody?
Hi,
I just agreed to buy a domain name from an individual who owns the rights. What do I do to insure I have all the rights to it? Do I just take his screenname and password from his registrar?
Once you own the domain name, you own the rights to it. What domain name registrar does that individual use? Sign up for an account with that registrar, which would be free.
Ask the domain seller to do an account transfer to transfer your domain to your account.
P.S. Taking his screenname and password does not make the domain name yours. Unless you configure the Address and relevnt info to your own, in that account. But the above way is how it is done.
How Do You Buy A Domain Name Outright?
If I wanted to start my own internet business how would I buy the domain name outright instead of renting the name?
you cant actually buy the domain, you can only rent it for a number of years, if you wanted you can rent if for like 100+ years.
go to somewhere like http://www.networksolutions.com to buy one
About to buy a domain name from an American seller and need help?
I am about to buy my very 1st domain name privatly from someone in America, however I dont know how I should be doing this and I dont want to be robbed of my money. Any pointers on how the process is supposed to go?
Thanks guys!
Personally I wouldn't buy a domain name from someone, I'd register one for myself properly. That way there can be no ownership dispute, which can be lengthy and costly.
UK domain names cost me £6-97 including VAT for 2 years, paying more than that is pointless unless you're a big business buying a domain name which is your trading name.
Consider a .co.uk or .me.uk instead.
How should I respond if someone wants to buy my domain name?
A marketing company wants to buy a domain name that I registered last year because they have a client that wants the name and have plans for it.
I also have plans for this domain as a sports portal. The word '...guide.com....' is part of the domain name. I have created a business plan for this site and have developed a CMS to manage the portal.
Any ideas of how I should respond to this marketing company? I had a similar offer months ago and my reply was simple "How much do you think its worth?" then I did not receive any email replies from them.
I want a good reply this time and hopefully a good dollar figure. :)
How should I respond or reply to this offer to buy my domain?
It may be wise to approach a firm that specializes in domain name appraisal to ensure that you know what's a reasonable expectation of value. Also, if you're not a strong negotiator, perhaps it's also a good idea to get in touch with someone who is used to brokering domain name deals to advise you.
Also, I guess it depends on whether you could easily pick up another domain to replace the one you have that you could use for the business plan you have put together and the work you've put into it. If it's a matter of finding a similar name and there's something available which is close enough to still work effectively, why not register what you can and try to negotiate a good price for your name and then use the money you will get for your existing name to build the business?
The bottom line is that you need to know what sort of figure you would be happy with once the deal is done and make sure that's what you get. The days of the zillion-dollar domain deal are long gone, but you may be able to get a reasonable price if you have a strategy in place and know what you're looking to get for your name. Also, when you start negotiating, have a walking-away plan in place, too so that you don't feel pressured if the deal isn't what you're looking for.
Good luck!

Best site to buy a domain name and web space?
I need to buy a domain name and web space, can anyone tell me some sites that have good prices and good costumer service?
I have several of the most popular free hosts listed below, however since you are willing to pay a nominal fee then http://www.godaddy.com would be your best option.

Who gets the money when you buy a Domain name?
Prices seem to vary between providers, but who do they actually buy the domain name from?
And if the prices they charge are just for their services in procuring the name, is it possible to apply for a domain name yourself without incurring these costs?
Nominet is the Internet registry for .uk domain names (so they say).
http://www.nominet.org.uk/
Registration Fees
Nominet UK's registration fees cover a period of two years, after which a renewal fee is payable (at the same rate) for each subsequent two year period.
Registering direct with Nominet
Nominet charges £80 plus VAT per direct domain name registration, which must be paid in full in advance.
Registering via a Nominet member
Nominet offers its members a discount on registration fees. Registrars, including Nominet members, usually combine the domain name registration fee with charges for other services that they provide to end users. Prices therefore vary widely in the commercial marketplace and you should shop around in order to find a deal that suits your needs.
The members' fee is given in return for members undertaking some of the administration associated with bulk registrations, including end user billing, which would otherwise be carried out by Nominet.
How do I buy a domain name with a guarantee of ownership for atleast 25-50 years?
Are domain registrars the only sources of domain names? If so - what if they come next year and say I cant renew ur domain name ?
Hello,
Yes domain registrars are the only source of domain names. As for your second question they cannot refuse to renew the following year unless you refuse to pay your renewal fee at the end of the specified time of renewal.
Here is how it works.
1. You pick a name you want to register.
2. Go to Internic or Godaddy.com or any one of the many sites to register your name.
3. Type in the name in the search box to see if the name you have picked is available.
4. If it is available follow the on screen instructions to register your selected name.
That's pretty much it. Once you have registered a name, as long as you pay for the renewal each year, the name is yours forever.
The only way I can see that you might have a problem is if the name you choose to register is some sort of infringement on and existing company name.
For example I was reading a little while ago where someone registered a name that was called facebook-something.com. The person who registered the name has now received legal notice from Facebooks' legal department ordering a cease and desist order on the use of the name.
The only other issue you may run into is if you register a name of an existing company, who has not jumped on the internet bandwagon yet, in the hopes of selling the name for a profit back to said company. There are a wide array of viewpoints on this problem, more than I believe I need to get into in this answer.
Other than that as long as you keep up with the yearly renewal fee, the name is yours forever. You cannot be refused renewal for any other reason other than the items listed above as far as I am aware of.
Hope this helps answer your question!
Cheers!
Mike
