Buy it. No one is stopping you here. Do you mean a dedicated server at an ISP for hosting a web site? It's really insane this site - people ask 6 word questions with no context and expect a good answer to their question. Find an ISP that sells them and buy them. Call a computer manufacturer and order one. A dedicated server for WHAT?

Where to buy a dedicated server?
I was thinking of buying from esecuredata where they have VERY VERY cheap prices but their support sucks really bad. My other option was hivelocity. They are not too expensive when it comes to dedicated servers, they have friendly support, and also (this is what i like the best) they said they would help me install ANYTHING on my server for free! Another thing i like about hivelocity is that i can get 25 percent off (though that still does not compare to esecuredata). You probably need to give more details. What do you want to use the server for ( Web, local file server ) ? What operating system does it have ? Are you learning it to become a support engineer or just for personal use? Nige

Ok i'd like to set up an ftp server but i don't want to dedicate my own personal computer for it. Is there some website or company or something that rents out or lets people buy ftp servers? Or maybe there's a different name for what i want. I'm looking for a dedicated server that myself and those i allow can store and access files on remotely? Thanks.

If all you want to do is save files amongst people you may want to look at something besides FTP. I would recommend something like www.xdrive.com which they will provide you with up to 5GB of free online storage.

I do the same from home all on my adsl line here's what I did. 1) made sure my ISP gave me a set of 8 IP address (static) Check 2)went onto fleabay brought a cheap server £10.00 approx $20.00 Check 3)Brought the cheapest copy of windows 2000 server possible Check Made tonnes of errors on the way Check But now have an up and running server web host, all that sort of stuff all on my own. I will swap to linux next.

You can run dedicated server in your pc. All you need is a REAL IP. A server IIS or Apache. Static IP is better for this reason. If you have a dynamic IP then you have to use some special software to access your server or use up IP each time. You can use dyndns client go to http://www.dyndns.com and open a free dns account and download their client (so it can update your IP each time it changes. Actually the Opteron is a much better processor. It is 64 bit and so if you are running Linux or Windows 64 than you can take advantage of it. Databases can really take advantage of 64 bit chips. The 64 bit intel chip is called Itanium. You should be comparing Opteron versus Itanium and tell you the truth Opteron is better than even the Itanium! Look at HP or IBM for Opteron servers. Dell is still selling Intel only.
