Web Hosting/Design for Birth Announcement Business?
I have a small birth announcement business I advertise on myspace and craigslist since it's free but I'd like to create a website. How do I get a website for cheap? and that they have already nice designs or templates. I have no idea where to begin! I would like to pay no more than $10 a month.

You can get web hosting for $10/month or less at Hostamina.com - they also provide web design services or free web templates. Just send them an email and they will hook you up with whatever you need! You should avoid hosts that offer "unlimited" space/bandwidth as this is somewhat of a scam. You should also avoid hosts that offer ridiculous amounts of space/bandwidth, such as 10GB space for only $5/month. Hosts like this overload and oversell servers, and are bad news for anyone who wants reliability. You should also avoid answers here that send you to review sites, as those sites make money off commissions and rank hosts based on how much money they'll get paid, not on how good they are. You should avoid answers here that look like they are affiliate links as well, for the same reason. Hostamina.com is exactly what you need. Support is great! They will help you set up your website, and they will provide you with any help you need. Note that I am not using an affiliate link or sending you to a review site. http://www.hostamina.com -They provide awesome personalized support -They know how to handle all your business needs -They never oversell -They never overload servers -They offer realistic plans -You actually get what they say you get -There is no fake "unlimited" space or bandwidth -There is no fake "50,000 GB" space or bandwidth -They will help you with anything you need help with -They will put you on a super fast server -Every server has at least dual quad core processors -Every server has at least 4GB of RAM -Every server has strict account limitations -Most companies average 300 accounts per server -Hostamina averages 100 accounts per server -Instant Shopping Carts, Blogs, Forums, PHP-Nuke, Joomla, and more!

Any suggestions of how to quote for web / brochure / business card design services?
I'll be doing some freelance web design / brochure design and business card design very soon... Can anyone recommend a pricing structure (excluding web hosting & registration) ....? Ie - hourly rate as opposed to package deals... With and without Flash components.... Search Engine Optimization... Any suggestions for sites to check out for assistance with this..? *** I would consider myself quite good at web DESIGN, but I wouldn't say expert A List Apart type material!!! *** What do you think guys..?

What you want to do is figure out an average of how long it takes you to do a job. For that job you bid on how many hours it will take you based on your average. If you are bidding without competition then you want to bid based on a worst case scenario, at least if you are really good.

web design and web hosting?
Okay, I have got photoshop (7.0) and I do a little bit of web design on it. I also have "Fusion" for hosting, and I have "Dreamweaver MX 2004" (Which I haven't had time to learn yet). The question is..... does anyone on here do web design? How did they get started in it, do you do it out of your house, or business? And web hosting. I have used 1&1 hosting before, and had pretty good luck with them. But does anyone know of (if there is one) a legit site that has free hosting? Maybe without ads? (Probably gonna be hard to find I know). Or what is your experience's with different web hosting places? Can you reccomend a good one? I am basically wanting a place to have me a site, where I can have some stuff I have made on there, and maybe some templates to sale. Thanks. Saz: Wow, thanks. I was hoping to sell a few templates, and if I got good enough and got the programs I needed maybe sell some models, or characters and maybe some logos. (I've posted another question about graphic design and automotive design). I've already done a few sites for people, and a logo or two, but would like to get my own site setup to really get it going if I can. I want to do this mainly on the side unless it really catches on.

Several questions here, I'll try to answer in separate points below: 1. Learning web development That's a personal style question. For me I found it easiest to take a course to make me focus at first. I then went head-first hands-on and learned wayy more. I suggest the basics you need are HTML and CSS. Everthing beyond that is dependent on what you want to do. 2. Web Hosting Suggest if you're actually selling on-line and showcasing your work that you may want a dedicated site. Free hosting may not be all that impressive to potential client... I have found http://www.canadawebhosting.ca/ to be excellent, but maybe more than you want to spend. They are Canadian based and have phenomenal customer support. You also get a mySql DB (DataBase) at no extra charge - comes in handy for advanced tools. 3. As for selling on-line, if it's just templates and low inventory you can set-up a PayPal solution and use a PayPal shopping cart. If you have greater needs, then that would again push you into dedicated hosting with a database option. Now, just what are you selling? You may want to post some follow up questions to get a feel for how much consumer interest there may be in your offering. This can help you weigh in on how much $$ this actually worth for you to spend. - There are also tax write-offs to consider if you're ready to start a real business... Good luck!

What should I know in starting up my own web design business?
I have some experience supporting a large website, but not with the entire design process yet. But I really enjoy doing this type of work and would love to make money doing it. I have most of the software I think I would need (Photoshop, Dreamweaver, etc), as well as space with a hosting service. I am still working on my personal website and I don't have much to include for a personal portfolio yet. What would be the best steps to take to really venture out on my own by starting my own web design business and find potential customers? With all of the 'do it yourself' templates out now, is there a big demand for this type of work still?

First, be sure you're good at it. I know that sounds really critical, but there are a lot of people out there that enjoy designing websites and 'think' that they're good, but they aren't. Make sure you add value to the industry. Next, try getting business owners you know to hand over their website design requirements. Build one or two for little cost. You'll build references and a portfolio. Then try to find places to gather new clients. Do you fit into a niche where no one else offers a good service? Do you provide back-end programming or just front-end design? Market to specific clients and serve that sector well! You can also find websites like elance.com and others that allow you to bid on open project requests. Do good work, always treat your clients right and keep strong referral networks going. Never stop networking. Best of luck!

I have recently started a web design business and am looking for any tips or advice that may help?
I am looking for tools/tips to making a professional website, as well as tools/tips on flash, flash intros, hosting, free/inexpensive flash tools.

I found the most time consuming was creation of graphics. I have Adobe Photoshop, COrel and Macromedia software but the MOST productive software is XARA Webstyle and also try Swish and SwishMAX (for Flash) and is much easier to use than FLASH. XARA is great for QUICK graphics. Look them up on the internet or be nicer and go to my website and click the links to XARA so I can get an affiliate bonus, either way - you have to try XARA. www.smithcreations.com

How do I accept credit cards for my new small business?
I want to accept credit cards for my new web hosting and design business instead of going through pay pal, I'm based in the Los Angeles area and am looking for a good company that is not going to take too much of a percentage and will lease the machine inexpensively.

Applying for credit card merchant account services is quite easy. Once you shortlist your prospective underwriters to 3-4, compare their fees and features. Few companies who are the market leaders, use their reputation to charge premium for their merchant account services. Others are just beginners, so they can lower, waive or skip some fees, to procure your business. But they may charge you fees after 1 year or a trial period. Read the terms and conditions properly to understand the working of the account, its related expenses and likely pitfalls. Contact the lender about your doubts and questions, before filing your application to open an account. Then once you are approved, you can rest assured that your choice was right.
