THE host file is a file that helps your computer in getting information from the internet by giving it details of IP addresses to use/not use/allow and (sort of) what IP address is to be used for your computer. The IP address for your computer that we are talking about here is the "loopback" address - it means that information that your computer asks for is to be given to your computer. The loopback address is 127.0.0.1 and could be translated into everyday language as "myself." This address is not the address your ISP uses and not the IP address your computer will use when "talking" to another one in your own home. This address is solely meaning "bring what I ask for to myself." No, I don't recommend you use it at this point in time unless you are instructed by an expert during a clean up of malware (viruses, etc.) on your computer. Viruses sometimes edit your hosts file to stop your computer from being able to get to any websites that might help you clean your computer of viruses. It's one way that websites can be blocked from being accessed. Basically all the editor is likely to be is a way of changing the text in your file and is probably less likely to result in making mistakes than using NotePad which is what would usually get used.

FREE HOST AD-Supported or not!?
I need a free host to host at least 5 pages and not alot of bandwidth at least to store 5k unique hits. I have been a victim of some very bad hosts, post4hosting.com has deleted my website that was made in 3 yrs.. w/ no back-ups.. sad yes, I get nothing. IIts not paid host but its free and terms do not state they can shut-me down for any reason so i should get some money. Well i need maybe 5MB disk and like 1000 MB or 2000MB bandwidth. All i want is a temp host to tell every1 what happned and if we'll b back later... I need no MYSQL etc. no e-mail jsut a temp host to host a page. No po-ups just a simple text or ad banner =/

A lot of people use ProBoards

Where can I get free website host with no ad?
Free. No ad. Allow me to put my own googld Adsense. My own URL Anything like this?

I'm pretty sure WordPress lets you host your blog online with them. Not sure about incorporating AdSense into it, but don't think it'd be a problem. ...please don't produce spam just for the adsense revenue!

Redirected host?? Ad-Aware scan result as critical object?
I'm hopeless with computers so don't understand the technical jargon. Whilst doing a scan with Ad-Aware it threw up 11 critical objects, all redirected hosts or something. I clicked repair but nothing happened, I've used this program for ages and never seen it before on scan results, all the ''problems'' have 127.0.0.1 next to them. I've no other probs with the comp ie viruses or anything so does anyone know why it would start throwing these up as a problem, what causes it and how I get rid. Is my computer under threat?? Help please, thanks!

"Redirect" probably refers to a browser hijacker; malware that forces your browser to a site you don't want. You need to immunize your system; I tend to use Spybot Search & Destroy but I think Ad-Aware has an immunize option. Also download Spyware Blaster which is good at immunizing and blocking known malware threats. running C Cleaner will probably help too. http://100-downloads.com/

When on "craigs list" and I'm trying to reply to an ad, the wording comes up..."Host Insight could not be ..?
How do I get to answer ad on "Craigs List" when it doesn't recognize Host "Insight"

Craigslist usually gives an email where u can email the person just use that.

Ad-aware 2007 host file question?
What are host files? When I run a scan on ad-aware 2007 it scans host files and alot of them are names of sites that I've have never been to. Are the sites that are listed in the host files sites that you have visited before or not? dadimwit, when you say that "malware can edit the hosts file to redirect traffic from a "safe" site (such as Google or Wikipedia) to sites hosting content that may be offensive or intrusive to the user or the user’s computer system." would that site still look like the google site or will it take you to a totally differnt website that's obviously not google?

No, the sites in the Host file are used to filter ad sites by having entries for known ad-servers redirect to the local machine. Unfortunately, the hosts file can also be "hijacked", or used for malicious purposes. For example, adware, computer viruses, trojan horses, or other malware can edit the hosts file to redirect traffic from a "safe" site (such as Google or Wikipedia) to sites hosting content that may be offensive or intrusive to the user or the user’s computer system. Wikipedia has a good write up on Host Files: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hosts_file

I want to build an online "where are they now" wiki, and have shared ad revenue with the host. Any ideas?

Why share the revenue? OpenServing.com lets you keep all of the ad revenue. I suggest you apply soon since we're currently accepting topics in the "entertainment" category to tie in with our new Entertainment wiki magazine at http://entertainment.wikia.com/
