How does Microsoft Exchange licensing work in a shared hosting environment?
As a service provider, do we buy per user CAL's or use the external connector license? Also, what licensing do we need for the Windows 2003 Server CAL's?
Microsoft's licensing structure can be very, very complicated. You should probably discuss licensing directly with your TAM (Technical Account Manager).
Can I install SquirrelMail in my shared hosting?
I have a shared hosting with the control panel Ferozo. It offers two webmail clients: Ferozo mail and Horde; anyway, they are not installed correctly. I have access to mySQL and PHP, but I dont have SSL. I also installed a vBulletin forum, so I wonder that if I can also install the SquirrelMail webmail client with the features my hosting has.
Thank you
No you cant.
You want ssh access(shell access) and root access to do this.

What shared hosting service do you recommend?
I want fast performance and good up-times.
Every hosting plan has its advantage and disadvantage. And your requirement may not the same as others. So the best solution is you choose your "own" best hosting plan based on your requirement and budget. http://www.hostingmatrix.org is a great place that let you compare features and price of most-reputable hosting plans.
How many websites are there per server on a shared hosting?
Does anybody know how many websites do hosting companies usually host per one server? (or the usual range?)
There can be just one, but I doubt it. I have seen HUNDREDS without any problem.
How does e-mail work on a shared hosting account ?
I'm trying to find out if two people can have the same e-mail address and also if other people in any way could see my files or e-mail if i have a shared hosting account. Is there a privacy issue with having an e-mail account on a shared housting account.
Typically a decent hosting service will provide a number of different email addresses to use (say 5 or 10). So just have separate people register different names.
Help needed with CRONTAB on linux shared hosting. How do I access the CRONTAB?
I have a job that needs to run on a daily basis. My server is a shared hosting server which means I cannot see any files other than my own. I have various CGI scripts running within my own area of the server.
To edit the CRONTAB I need to know how to access it. Where is it? I do not have any tools available to activate a LINUX based command line or direct access to the cgi-bin.
Do I need a script? Access to the server? or just a plain miracle.
I have contacted my host and they keep sending instructions. But most assume a level of knowledge of LINUX beyond the realms of normal Windows people.
Please don't copy and paste web pages that state 'Access the crontab -e" - I think I have read them all and still do not know what on earth they are talking about when looking at my server/control panel.
Those crontab -e commands are things you should run from an ssh command prompt. Not all shared hosting gives access to ssh. If your control panel has no options for scheduling/crontab, then email your host and ask them for ssh login capabilities. Many will give that to you if you provide some ID (scan and email)...
What is the best shared Microsoft Exchange hosting service?
I am looking for a shared Microsoft Exchange 2003 hosting service, suitable for hosting about five (5) personal email accounts. It needs to be reliable, with a large quota, and access via Outlook Web Access (OWA).
I have found the 1&1 (1and1.com) hosted Microsoft Exchange service to be quite interesting when considering the features and price, but they don't have the best ratings and reviews.
oops no answers yet... i was hoping to learn too.
but try cihost.com.. i have been using them. was good, but recently my shared server has been some problems. my history with them is about 8+yrs
Can I put PHP into my index.html page in a shared hosting environment on GoDaddy?
I'm hoping there's a file I can stick into my file system that will tell the shared hosting that in my directory .html documents can run PHP scripts. Right now I have to rename them index.php and that's going to really be a problem on my site. Does anyone know a way to change that setting?
yah you can try doing it in a .htacess file , you would prob have to put it in every folder that you want this to work
add this to an existing .htacess file or make up a text file, name it .htaccess, add the following:
DirectoryIndex index.html
AddType application/x-httpd-php3 .php
you may need this too...........
Shared website hosting poll?
I am doing some Research for a project and I need to know what are the key features people look for when choosing a shared hosting package.
There is the obvious price and space ect but is there anything else?
What do you look for?
It is very important that your service be uptime. It means that you can access your account whenever you want to update your web pages, and your visitors can view your website whenever they type your website address. If your hosting service is not uptime it is real hell!
As you may know a domain name is just a name, not a real website. If you are going to create your website: 1- Buy a domain name. To get a domain name, you have to pay an annual fee to a registrar for the right to use that name. 2- Buy a web hosting service to provide your online space and enable you to get your website online at your purchased domain name.
If you want to start your website I recommend purchase your domain and hosting together. In this way it is possible to get your domain for free. Some hosting services offer this gift today.
As an experienced webmaster I recommend BlueHost service which I’m sure it would work for you and fulfill all your requirements. They have a really great offer for hosting & I have used them for over 3 yrs now, and have never had a single problem with them.

Is getting a dedicated-virtual server the best way to avoid getting shared hosting banning because of CPU use?
What I mean is...at Mediatemple.net with their (gs) Grid-Service plan, they only allow 1,000 GPUs and if you go over (instead of getting banned) you have to pay more
and I think "banning" was the wrong to use...I meant "suspending", like how some sites suspend you for a day or more if you happen to get on the front page of Digg.com
banning?
who is you're provider? Get rid of them...
the best hosting I've ever had with fantastic support and amazing reliability and speed is
mediatemple.net and theplanet.com
pricey, but worth the money...you get what you pay for.
